2. Cooking Directions

  1. In a bowl, combine flour, pecans and salt; cut in the shortening until crumbly. Gradually add water, tossing with a fork until a ball forms. Divide dough in half. Roll out each portion to fit a 9-in. pie plate; place pastry in pie plates. Flute edges and set aside. Combine pie mix, milk and egg; pour into pastry shells. For topping, combine brown sugar, flour, pecans and cinnamon in a small bowl; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over filling. Cover edges of pastry loosely with foil. Bake at 375 degrees F for 40-45 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 2 hours. Refrigerate until serving.

Yield: 12 servings

3. Still Hungry?

Basic pumpkin pie is good, but we think this dressed-up version is even better. Plenty of pecans add a nutty crunch to the pastry and the streusel topping. It's a perfect dessert for Thanksgiving or any time you want to end a dinner with something special. --Bertha Johnson, Indianapolis, Indiana

  • To nihil

To answer nihil's question regarding "combine pie mix" and why there is no pumpkin in the ingredients.... the 7th ingredient in the list is 1 can (30 ounces) pumpkin pie filling..... this is the pumpkin pie mix. This is not canned pumpkin but instead a combination of pumpkin and spices prepared for you to put in your pie. It usually calls for a can of evaporated milk and eggs to be added to it.

  • Good but the recipe needs work.

The recipe makes 2 crusts. If you want to use pure pumpkin vs the pie mix just add spices. Use all of the filling for one pie. It was great and I will bake it again.

  • Pumpkin Pie Any Way is the Greatest. Yeah!

I am a pumpkin pie fan to the bone. I love pumpkin pie and believe that it should be the only dish offered after dinner with a glass of milk. Pumpkin pie has that taste that melts you when you take the first taste of it. I love the recipe and wish that more recipes would have been primarily on the pie itself. I enjoyed it very much. If a person is not a fan of pumpkin pie then they will not enjoy it as much. If they are not a fan they are merely sampling the pie and do not have as much invested in the taste as a true lover of the pumpkin. That is right I love pumpkin pie. If pumpkin pie had been a human I would have had to been the pie's best friend. I must say that knowing how much I enjoy my pumpkin pie makes me feel good to know that people are still making the pumpkin pie a part of their meal too. Thank you for the recipe and I hope to see more with the focus on pumpkin pie itself.
