  • Apricots are the key

    robicheaux.eric - January 16, 2008 12:48:43 PM PST
The apricot preserves are a good touch. I've used apricot preserves in barbecue sauces for years, but have never tried them with salsa. Very, very good.
Strips of pork loin are also good when put into a slo-cooker with 1 cup apricot preserves and 2 cups barbecue sauce.

  • So Good, Easy To Make

    sevenyearwait - January 14, 2008 02:26:23 PM PST
I made these tacos last night for my girlfriend and I and they were amazing. Before I made them my girlfriend stated that the recipe didn't sound very good, but after she tried them she was very impressed and told me that they were actually very good. It was very easy to make and the leftovers warmed up and tasted just as good as when I cooked it.

I had taken the good advice of Mr. Fix-It and added a roasted poblano chili. I cut it in small slices and added them with the mixture of beans, salsa, and preserves. Very good addition...thank you Mr. Fix-It. I will definitely make these tacos for friends next time. This recipe is an impressive way to spice up anyone's taco night.

  • Yummy and quick

    smemery02 - January 12, 2008 03:17:27 PM PST
These tacos were really good and best of all, quick and easy to make! I would say it serves 6-8, rather than 12. I love the addition of the apricot preserves, it adds just a touch of sweetness to the spice. I will definitely make these again. Another thought, you could probably take the leftovers and wrap it in a burrito with some rice for the next day!

  • Excellent and easy to make

    Mr. Fix-It - January 7, 2008 02:49:05 PM PST
Ran down to the store, got the ingredients and whipped these out for dinner. Delicious. I added a little liquid smoke and a roasted poblano chile to spice it up a little more.

To the person who thought it complicated, I'd suggest looking for recipes with shorter ingredient lists until you're more comfortable in the kitchen.

And to the ones comparing foods to bodily fluids (hopefully deleted by now): don't you have anything better to do after school than hanging out in food forums???

Anyways, thanks for the creative recipe, it's a keeper!

  • I am a cowboy

    un_llanero_solitario - April 30, 2008 07:43:27 PM PST
And I can tell you sure as black baldy comes from crossing a hereford with an angus that south of the Monzano Mountain we never ate anything that had black olives in it. As for the Pace Picante sauce, well that tastes great on anything including Sopapillas.

  • Will try this again with some modification!

    godged - April 17, 2008 12:18:56 PM PST
These were very good, but the meat/bean/salsa mixture was a bit blah, every though I used spicy chili beans and medium salsa.

I added sour cream and shredded cheese, instead of apricots.

    Overall, pretty tasty!

  • good idea for a recipe

    danrc83 - January 21, 2008 01:24:08 PM PST
Saying "quick" "easy" and "delicious" are not helpful reviews. This recipe is flexible; for those who do not like Old El Paso and Taco seasoning powder, it is not a stretch to find better salsa and some spices such as chile powder, onion powder and garlic.

  • Still looking for the leftovers ;)

    barxvylay - January 20, 2008 02:04:15 PM PST
I consider myself a ta-connoisseur and I had never tried tacos like this before. Absolutely great and original! The touch of sweetness from the apricots makes the pork divine! My only suggestion would be to use "soft" tortillas and next time I'll try adding some cilantro.

  • Very good...

    fantasmababe77 - January 16, 2008 08:37:47 AM PST
To the person that stated that this is just an advertisement for Old El Paso foods, I have to say that 1) you probably have not even tried this recipe and 2) the reason why it says Old El Paso in the recipe is because it was a recipe in the Pillsbury Bake-Off and in order to even compete in the Bake-Off, you must use Pillsbury or products affliliated with Pillsbury which is probably why they included the name Old El Paso in the ingredients.

  • Best non-beef taco I

    John - March 28, 2008 12:33:49 PM PST
I made this for my family and they all went crazy over it. My wife, who isn't a big taco fan, requests this all the time now. We like to eat it over steamed rice rather that the taco shells, and I add some chillies to my portion to spice things up a bit more (I like things hotter than the rest of the family). If you don't have the preserves, add a little BBQ sauce to it instead. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for something a little off the beaten path.

  • Not for family night

    todamgoood4u - February 20, 2008 03:17:56 PM PST
Pesonally, I absolutely loved these, but both the 9 year old and the 2 year old said "blah" to it and didn't eat it. They didn't like the pork, which I thought was fantastic. So ok, they are kids, what do they know. Then the girlfriend gets home and says, "eh, it's ok.".

This was my first try at any recipes from here and my first comment as well, so...the final verdict is that I would definitely make these again...for me. :)

  • These are excellente!!

    antjuju58 - May 26, 2008 11:38:42 PM PST
I read so many negative reviews about these tacos from people who never even made them? There major complaint was that cowboys don't eat pork tacos. Ever heard of vaqueros boys? I heard people say they never ate pork tacos in Mexico hmmmmmmmm I remember eating plenty of carnitas and fried pork tacos de oro-cooked to a golden brown.

Complaints about the various types of dressings put on the tacos. If you can't judge a book by its cover you can't judge a taco without eating it.

These are some of the most original tasting tacos ever. Don't listen to the naysayers try them for yourselves-muy deliciosa!

  • SALT ? Sodium Content !!!

    J T - May 26, 2008 06:49:33 PM PST
HEY !!! Take a look on those packages and see JUST how much sodium is involved. It may seem easy to make, but consider the amount of SODIUM that you are using !

  • Recipe Was A Hit

    Pekozo - January 27, 2008 07:46:52 PM PST
Made this for myself and my neighbors and it went over wonderfully.

I switched the pork loin out for a beef sirloin steak (not a fan of the other white meat). Steak picked up the flavors of the chili and the salsa perfectly.

  • How about Urban Cowboy Tacos

    brad y - February 3, 2008 09:01:16 AM PST
This is a delicious recipe for sure, but not quite 'cowboy'. That would require omitting the apricot (Not that it isnt good) and adding some chopped jalepenos. Then you have true cowboy tacos.

  • What a joke

    Eric - May 27, 2008 03:42:10 AM PST
You've got to be kidding me. Everything is out of a "far from latin-america" seasoning packet. Try coming up with something more original for those of us who understand that decent food comes from places outside of McDonalds and Applebees.

  • A Real Keeper!

    Rich - May 9, 2008 10:03:43 AM PST
I must admit to my own variation. No apricot preserves, and I added some red peppers and corn for color. I was also too lazy and cheap to buy the boneless pork loin, and chose the pork chop suey meat. I'm sure chicken breast and round steak would also work wonderfully for this recipe. But this recipe has earned it's place in the coveted recipe box!

  • cowboy tacos-come on, these aren

    ishmael m - April 14, 2008 02:09:22 PM PST
this is more like an advertisement for old el paso which isn't even mexican food. These so called tacos look good in the picture until you find out whats in them. Apricot preserve come on. I try to be optimisitic about new ideas when it comes to mexican food, but sometimes the ideas are ridiculous. Hey, but i think these were intended for white people who don't know better. Hey but everybody has there own idea of what food should taste like. Just my opnioun. i know these are just quick recipes for meals, but if your making ethnic food try not to change them up so much so that they are not even ethnic.

  • Absolutely disgusting

    mlopezhra1 - January 31, 2008 01:16:36 PM PST
By what stretch can this even be remotely considered a proper taco? And that salsa recipe? Blech! If the end result of this recipe is Mexican food that makes Taco Bell's crap seem authentic and delicious by comparison, Mission Accomplished!

  • Question

    jranfs - January 21, 2008 08:54:27 AM PST
I would like to know if the taco seasoning mix needs to be put in water first then poured on the pork or just poor the taco seasoning mix directly on the pork?

  • Blah!

    tx_trotter95 - January 20, 2008 10:15:12 AM PST
Sorry, but any recipe that uses El Paso taco seasoning can't be good. Maybe up north, but not in Texas.
