  • have the store kill 'em

    Lee S - February 8, 2007 11:54:44 AM PST
some seafood shops will steam/boil the lobsters for you before you buy them. all you need to do is call ahead. this saved me a lot of trouble since i don\'t have a pot large enough to cook even one lobster.

  • They MUST be using deadly Butter at 1000+ calories.

    Diann - February 8, 2007 12:22:25 PM PST
I just looked up the calories in a whole steamed lobster and came up with 260 calories for each lobster. Even if you ate BOTH of them you would still not get 1000 calories, This HAS to be a miss print.
I have another lobster fact that might help you guys out. If you put them in the freezer, then they do not whistle when you boil them.
I still prefer to get them at the store, Already to be cooked. Or better yet. Take me to a seafood restaurant and save the carnage for the cooks there. I am suprised Martha did not list this hint on here, After all, I GOT THAT HINT FROM HER!

  • Lobsters

    Peter F - February 8, 2007 05:24:07 PM PST
Lobsters don\'t "scream" when you put them in the water. The noise you here is air escaping the body as the shell expands from the heat. They don\'t feel anything.

  • Eat more Lobster

    Jenn - June 18, 2007 08:28:19 AM PST
First, if you don\'t want to kill it then don\'t, I mean get real, if you eat any kind of meat then the thing had to be killed. Hey even a Veggie had to be killed. I also wonder what a lobster eat\'s, I wonder if it kills to live also.

Secondly, anyone who thinks this is a bad recipe then tell us your own. I noticed a few people posting negitive comments without posting something of their own. That is just sad.

Eat more lobster or any meat YUMMY

  • Lobster is always a good choice if affordable.

    jamesnespentel - February 8, 2007 12:10:50 PM PST
Boil lobsters would have sufficed didn\'t need to use the language of kill.... regardless though you need to \'prepare\' them before cooking.
(puncturing their shells also works with a large sharp knife however if you boil sometimes deludes the taste i find.)

Another idea is to cajun rub the lobster post boil for the grill... which works out well... or Healthy a nayonaise sauce... yes Nayonaise (soy based mayo) with avocado onion and some tomato... i find works well hot and cold.

  • Bad Idea

    pepe - June 17, 2007 07:59:05 PM PST
I can simple say, having caught lobsters, cooked lobsters and having ate lobsters for near 30 yrs, this is the worst way to prepare a lobster.

Would never do it and therefore would never recommend it!

Steam a 2lb Lobster for 12-13 min and enjoy the taste! When lobster is concerned the simple way is the best way.

Oh, it also makes a big difference when the lobster is caught no more then the day before ( that cancels out most fish markets).

    Cheers

  • Counting calories

    xanadu_sunshine - June 15, 2007 05:58:39 PM PST
Actually, the recipe states that it serves 4 (1 lobster per) and also that the calorie count is per serving.

I found this recipe quite helpful, especially for a person that is new to having to cook for himslef(a recent college grad). By the way if you read the recipe it calls for 4 lobsters and if you say that only one lobster is 260 calories then you do get 1040 calories, so therefore the Nutrition Info is correct(well of by one calorie, but really). Quit being a four year old and reading the story by the picture, use the words.

    sinceresweetclassy - March 10, 2007 02:08:21 PM PST
I couldn\'t beleive what I was reading about Killing a Lobster! taking a knife to it.? while it\'s alive..? how barbaric! I\'m glad not too many people can afford to have Lobster to eat. I hate to see or hear of any animal Suffering.while being prepared to be eated.

  • aww poor lobster

    sandragans - February 8, 2007 11:46:25 AM PST
i have to admit, lobster is one of my favs, but yeah, i don\'t fancy killing it. they scream as you boil them :( unfortunately, this is the only way to eat them fresh although you can buy frozen tails at the supermarket. they are really freaking expensive though. i would hit up a local seafood restaurant that serves lobster (not red lobster) so you don\'t have to do the dirty work, or visit new england for the freshest, tastiest, most affordable kind.

  • Sounds good but...

    kikeboyandlovingit - June 18, 2007 05:04:11 AM PST
I usually run over the lobster with my car 3 or 4 times to really assure death. I then pick up the carcus, brush off the dirt then place in boiling water.

  • Lobsters == Cockroaches?

    Kirsten - February 8, 2007 06:26:52 PM PST
I\'m opposed to animal cruelty, however someone (Alton Brown, on Good Eats) pointed out to me that lobsters are similar in their geneology to cockroaches. Now all of you who say killing lobsters is wrong...would you kill a cockroach in your kitchen? I suspect that you would.

As for the calorie count, maybe they\'re counting the optional butter?

Personally, I\'ve always preferred crab to lobster. It\'s cheaper, for sure! Maybe I just never had a nice juicy fresh one like this though.

  • Cruelty is not appetizing

    lisapisa5800 - February 8, 2007 02:11:02 PM PST
If you must eat a lobster, there are faster, less painful ways to kill it. Why humans need to be so cruel (and arrogant) is beyond my understanding. Boiling any creature alive prior to a nice meal is an unspeakably cruel crime. Shame on you for printing this.

  • how romantic

    Jami Marie - February 8, 2007 11:31:58 AM PST
My idea of preparing a romantic dinner or any dinner for that matter does not include killing animals by boiling or stabbing them before hand..who does that?

    Cory - February 8, 2007 11:35:06 AM PST
I love lobster but yea I don\'t like how this was worded....."kill lobster" just doesn\'t sound romantic to me at all. And plus, can\'t you buy them already dead??
