I don\'t think anyone is going to yahoo foods to find gourmet recipes, as previous commentor assumes. I did follow the recipe. It was extremely easy and Very good. The key is to use a salsa that you really like. Salsa give it most of the flavor.

I thought this was a pretty good recipe, but I substituted a few items. I added fresh salsa (usaully better than jared) and pepperjack cheese.

  • Thats not even close to a real Mexican Tortilla Soup

    jpgarnor2004 - February 11, 2008 01:52:23 PM PST
A real tortilla soup has no beef or corn in it. The sauce is a simple tomato sauce fried with garlic and onion. You add chicken soup to the sauce and let it boil for 15 minutes with chile pasilla. To serve you add the fried tortillas, melting cheese, avocado in cubes and a spoon of sour cream. In Mexico we eat it with a little bit of lemon juice to add taste.

  • Sounds Icky

    Erin G - January 31, 2008 03:29:59 PM PST
I tried another tortilla soup recipes and now after reading what this one calls for, all I can say is that it sounds gross. Everything is canned in this recipe-blah. My husband is from Mexico, he would never go for this...the other tortilla soup I made was much better, more real (real veggies, spices, tortillas CHICKEN etc...)

  • Spice it up a little!

    Kathi L - December 4, 2007 10:02:57 AM PST
I made up a recipe....using basically the same items, with leftover taco meat one night. It is now a favorite at our house. If you find this one is a little bland and needs more flavor try adding a package of taco seasoning along with one can each of black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans and ranch style beans. A great way to get veggies into the kids.. I add extra tomatoes, celery, green peppers, onions...last three I brown with the meat. Not only do these extra items enhance the flavor, but they also help stretch the soup. They will love it. Top with Monterrey jack cheese and serve with tortilla chips, or Fritoes. We eat it when we go camping, all the boys in the troop ask for it!

It was simple to make and allowed me to add in other things. I did not cost to much to buy the things needed to use.
I hope you all can find time to try this soup...It will be well worth your time!

  • Yuck!

    sldteech - December 4, 2007 07:50:00 AM PST
Go to Food Network or some other seach site and look for the Taco Soup recipe that uses the dry Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. It\'s sooo much better. This soup is so easy to adjust to your tastes.

Not even close to the real thing. Should be chicken based.

Chicken broth, tomato (blended and added), shreaded white meat chicken, chipotle, avacado, Queso Fresco, real corn tortillas shreaded.

  • not the original recipe

    Eric B - December 3, 2007 04:49:07 PM PST
The original recipe does NOT use any kind of meat, the avocado is missing, the cream is missing... it might be a good recipe but it is NOT a mexican tortilla soup. This one looks more like it:

man, the ingredients in this recipe are rediculous. Nothing is mexican, TACO BELL ha hah ha that wannabe mexican restaurant run by indians not the ahhh ya ya ya ya ya ones but the ah la la la la ones, mexican style cheese, lol thing kept me laughing that is not mexican style tortilla soup. oh and the beef broth commin out the can. isnt mexican. gotta make that using beef and cooking it. theres no rice no potato no garlic. no tortilla in the soup. not outside. hence tortilla soup and theres no beef. wheres the beef ? oh and theres no SALSA in it. what does white america think, add a little salsa and its mexican, no! dont make me laugh.

  • This is not the recipe!

    dcmplea2 - December 11, 2006 10:29:32 AM PST
This is not the recipe for Mexican Tortilla Soup. The ingredients for the real thing are: farmer?s cheese, heavy cream, pasilla dried chilies, epazote, chicharr?n, avocado, tomatoes, garlic, chicken, salt and corn tortilla totopos. I prefer Mexican traditional food, I personally think that fusion cousine is sometimes con-fusion. There most be some understanding (and respect) of the evolution of any traditional cousine, chinese, italian, ...try cooking beef curry for example....it?s just wrong.
