  • my spin on the flag cake

    Princess Mommy - July 4, 2007 09:40:04 AM PST
Yes, this is yummy...but try this recipe!

2 tubes Pilsbury sugar cookie dough
    Cream Cheese
    powdered sugar
    butter
    vanilla
    milk
    strawberries and blueberries

spread the sugar cookie dough onto a large cookie sheet and bake on 350* for about 18 minutes (packaging says 14 min. for cookies, but since it\'s a BIG slab, it takes longer...but dont overcook it! You want it to be chewy).

cool the cookie and leave in the pan!

Make a filling using 1 block cream cheese, powdered sugar, butter, vanilla and milk. Notice I dont have measurements? Ive been doing this long enough I literally "eyeball" everything. Im thinking its about 2 cups of sugar, 1/2 stick of butter, tsp. of vanilla and just enough milk to make it the right consistancy. You want it thick, to spread onto the cookie after it completely cools.

Once the cookie is completely cool, spread the creamcheese mixture onto the cookie and refridgerate.

Cut strawberries lengthwise, keep blueberries whole.

Once mixture is cool and has set a little, assemble your berries to resemble the flag.

put back into fridge. Do not cut until you\'re ready to serve!

***I make this every 4th for our big party we attend. It\'s requested every year and is gobbled up by kids and adults! What a fun way to get your fruit!!!

    Hope you enjoy!

I just made this cake this morning to eat at the beach while watching fireworks but of course it looked so good I had to try some right away. Even if your not a very good cook don\'t be afraid to try it cause you don\'t know what you\'re missing out on!

  • Stars and Stripes!!! and YUMMY TOO

    luv2dance4joy - July 4, 2007 10:44:40 AM PST
I just made this flag for my mother-in-law\'s cook out. I tasted the pound cake and berries that I did not put in the dessert. It is good and simple! I have to go to work after I drop by the cook out, but I hate to go empty handed. I saw the little flag cake idea on yahoo, and it is fast to buy and make!!! (SO CUTE TOO)

  • Sounds Good!

    k_i_b_a25 - June 28, 2009 10:16:11 AM PST
I haven\\'t had this dessert all dressed up with the fancy decorations on it but it is absolutely delicious. I think some of you people are just idiots. There\\'s nothing wrong with bending the rules a bit but It\\'s called MODERATION, which is something a lot of us Americans don\\'t seem to understand, I\\'m afraid. Just because they make a whole cake that doesn\\'t mean you have to try your best to eat all of it or grab the biggest slice you can find. Almost anything you eat has the potential of being unhealthy. I mean come on..Don\\'t use the whipped cream or pound cake??? That just leaves the fruit which you\\'d be totally making something else if you lost the other ingredients. And who says you have to use regular whipped cream, the lower fat version tastes exactly the same to me. This recipe isn\\'t set in stone, you don\\'t have to follow it exactly and if you don\\'t, good for you but leave others alone to decide how they want to eat, if it isn\\'t you or your family, you shouldn\\'t be worried about it.

Poke holes in it with chop stick or tooth pick and pour red and blue jello in everyother hole
put in refrigerator for a few hours to chill
    top with whip cream
    strawberries and blue berries

Looks patriotic inside and out and taste so moiste and delicious.

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    maggieb_153 - July 4, 2007 10:38:22 AM PST
I found out that if you just put whip cream in one layer on the bottom,
then layer it with straberries, then more whip cream, then put the
flag design on top. It tastes soooooo much better!

  • Will make this cake

    figureskating101 - July 4, 2007 11:24:27 AM PST
The way the strawberries are put on the cake is ugly. The spacing is really well done. When I make a cake similar to this one I put the strawberries on the cake with the white part facing down not up. I also make mine using a strawberry boxed cake. The cool whip for the frosting gives this cake just the right touch. Here is the web site to the flag cake I have made six or more time : http://www.bettycrocker.com/Recipes/Recipe.aspx?recipeId=36250 Remember I make that cake using a strawberry one.

    berrylover - July 4, 2007 10:56:43 AM PST
This is a great and simple desert to have to top off any 4th of July BBQ. One addition we made was to put in slices of star fruit in the field of blueberries. Then we also sliced the strawberries in half and put them side to side bottom to top so the stripe is a more solid red color. Yummy for the eyes and the tastebuds!

  • uh. . .

    THIS is a recipe?

    Prepackaged Cake, Coolwhip, Strawberries and Blueberries. . . brought to you by kraft. . . . wow. . . . 5 stars!

fruit is good on its own, you wanna be healthy, leave out the prepackaged crap cake, and the coolwhip. . . make your own cake with natural sugar and eggs, and leave out all of the chemical preservatives, then make your own whipped cream. . . quit being lazy and then crying when you look at yourself in the mirror. Those who don\'t make time to be healthy, will eventually have to take time to be sick!

  • ???????

    jackies_mama - July 4, 2007 10:34:28 AM PST
I can\'t believe that the other reviewers of this dish are so ignorant of basic nutrition that they think this cake is actually healthy! Cool Whip contains corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated coconut and palm kernel oil, all of which are bad news for your body. In additon, more than half the calories of a serving are fat. Each nine gram serving provides 25 calories (105 J) of which 15 cal (63 J) are fat. On top of all this bad news, Cool Whip is even unhealthy for your wallet! According to a recent Wired Magazine article, Cool Whip consumers are paying 41 cents per ounce for mostly water and air; twice the cost of homemade whipped cream!

  • Is a cake decorated with a flag design a violation of the Flag Code?

    choochooo95 - July 4, 2007 11:11:22 AM PST
"There is nothing specific in the Flag Code regarding the use of the US flag as food. It does say, "No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America." And it states, "... It should not be ... printed or otherwise impressed on ... anything that is designed for temporary use and discard..." The icing (or decoration) on a cake would generally be eaten, digested, and "discarded" in a most disrespectful way. We suggest that it is an inappropriate display of the flag." For more on the US flag, visit this site I found using Yahoo Search : http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html#5
    It is very interesting!

An alternative may be to use the berries in the shape of a star, or Uncle Sam, or fireworks shooting through the air!! Have fun.
