  • Low calorie?

I am a little confused as to why I found this under the low-calorie section if it is over 900 calories a serving?

  • You can alter the fat!

    Jen - April 3, 2008 02:46:04 PM PST
I'm guessing the main reason the calorie and fat content are so high are the 9 tbs of oil and 4 tbs of butter! I really doubt you need all that oil and butter to cook this recipe -- just cut back on all the oil and butter when grilling and frying. I would think you could use about a tablespoon of oil to fry the garlic and chickpeas rather than 5 (or even try a cooking spray instead of oil), and if you don't mind dry pitas omit the butter entirely or just cut back a lot. Also try substituting a product like Smart Balance which contains more "good" fats, or use olive oil instead of butter since that also contains good fats. You might be able to cut back on the amount of oil on the shrimp too. (Since olive oil is good for you, you don't need to omit it from the recipe entirely -- but I don't think you need the whole 9 tbs either!)

Many of these high cal recipes can easily be cut down a little with modifications like this -- you don't have to make it exactly as the directions say :) (Though I also wonder why this was listed in the search results for "low calorie"... Even on a standard 2000-calorie diet, this is half your daily calories and well over half your daily fat!)

  • Nutrition Data

Actually, the calculated calorie intake is completely wrong. It's actually about 768 calories. Although this food is very fatty, you can take out the unnecessary fats (such as the butter.) It also depends on your intake of the olive oil you cook with.
Yes, this isn't a light dish - but olive oil is very healthy for you!

980 Calories, 85g carbohydrates and 48g of fat!!! That's not a low-calorie meal!!You get less than all of that in a burger from McDonalds. Need to reassess your recipes!!

  • Worth Trying

    Angie V - November 27, 2007 06:31:01 PM PST
This was definitely worth trying, but along with everything else in the recipe, I would suggest using a little less lemon and adding lemon capers to the chickpea puree (once it's all minced together). It gives it a little more color and taste.

Try to remember that 30 grams of the fat per serving is from the olive oil. Olive oil is GOOD for you. You should eat it.
