What does it matter if it\'s Mexican, Australian, American or Asian. If it\'s goooooood, it\'s goood. And if it can go through my face into my tummy im a happy child.

WOW-you can\'t get away from it. Either people are upset because you ignore ethnic backgrounds or they throw a fit because you mention it! THIS IS A FOOD SITE! Food is to be celebrated no matter what your color, creed, etc. Don\'t be so touchy! Life is too short!

  • Have to comment on the mexican thread.

    Vin M - November 26, 2007 05:44:49 PM PST
Most "Mexican" food in the states is really Americanized anyway. Why throw a fit about this one. I am from New Mexico and relatively close to the border and a lot of the "Mexican" food we have here is really not authentic. I have had authentic Mexican and frankly, I am not impressed. I gladly steer away from menudo, posole, tamales as well as many mystery stews that my grandmother makes. I will take a New Mexican Green Chili Enchilada any day. So what if someone wants to dump out a taco onto a bed of lettuce, sprinkle it with tortilla strips and call it a Mexican dish. Have you ever had "real" Italian food. (God\'s graces, do we Americans have that one wrong.)

The recipe - Leave out the cheese on this one to make it healthier. That is where most of the fat is coming from and honestly, the cheese doesn\'t add a tremendous amount of flavor.

  • For cholesterol conscious

For an even healthier twist try substituting the ground turkey for TVP (textured vegetable protein). It is used a lot in vegetarian cooking. It taste great and is cholesterol and fat free. To give it a better taste ecspecially in chilli when soaking the TVP in water add a couple of tablespoons of ketchup. TVP can be a little bland without adding anything to give it a little umph. Hope you all enjoy this tip!

  • taco salad

    john k - June 2, 2009 02:09:26 PM PST
try using some fritos as a base, it is like a taco shell...and use Catalina Dressing ( fat free also)..as a dressing instead of salsa...
I think you might like it..try it..it is not a Mexican dish..it is more of an Anglo dish...in case you do not want to be offended..

  • Best Taco Salad

    Jennifer - July 25, 2008 12:21:56 PM PST
I think the best Taco Salad is:

Ground beef, salsa, lettuce, tomato, black olives, kidney beans, and cheddar cheese. You can also put pepper jack cheese to give it a little kick. If you like green olives you can add them too for a little different taste......Mix all together and it makes a great meal!

Most of what is incorrectly referred to as \"Mexican\" food in the U.S. is really \"Tex-Mex\" food that originated in the Southwest U.S. As such, it isn\\'t Mexican but rather Southwest American. That said, it is still some of the best food on Planet Earth!

Much better and healthier to use Venison. NO additives and is just as tastey.

  • Make Lower Fat

    Shana A - July 14, 2008 12:39:20 PM PST
You can make it more diet friendly by using Boca or Morningstar crumbles for the meat. Leave the cheese and sour cream off too and that will bring the fat and calories down!

  • Nutrition information is incomplete

    robacrossdpond - June 2, 2009 06:09:41 AM PST
It would have been helpful, if the Sodium content value was included in the nutrition information, seeing as the salad is listed as healthy.

As more and more of us are watching the contents of our food choices, it helps if the important nutrition information, can be included in recipes, so folks can make informed choices.

  • Taco Salad is probably an American treat

    GA-FL girl - October 20, 2007 05:37:25 PM PST
This is in reply to those reviewers who are Mexican. There are many ethnic dishes that have had been creatively altered to appeal to an American audience (i.e. pizza with pineapple and ham). It\'s just fun food adapted to American palates using products well liked by many in this country;many will not "do gourmet" after a busy day at work. This is why we used to be called a "melting pot"--influences of many cultures and tastes. Get a grip and lighten up!

All these recipes will add pounds! This one for instance: There are 19 grams of fat per serving. Every fat gram has 9 calories. That\'s a total of 171 calories from fat per serving. The total caloric count per serving is 419, so it\'s 40% fat! Not "low fat" at all!

  • Calorie loaded

    ksfoodjunkie - April 11, 2008 03:14:30 PM PST
This recipe would be much healthier and lower calorie if it used a low fat cheese and got rid of the beans. The bean protien not being completed just supplies the body with a starch it doesn\'t need.

  • How is this healthy?

    emilysmom_1997 - January 14, 2008 02:31:05 PM PST
I don\'t understand how this recipe is supposed to be healthy. It has an awful lot of fat for what ingredients it has in it, and 479/cal per serving for just beans, lean ground turkey, and lettuce??

  • is it "real" Mexican?

    Francisco E - May 4, 2007 01:15:02 PM PST
Nothing against the recipe, it looks delicious but, is it really Mexican food? I have never tried a taco salad at home. I am from Puebla, Mexico a place were food is transformed to art and one good example are the Chiles en Nogada. If you read this comment, please tell me in what part of Mexico people really eat Taco Salads; these to me, are more Tex-Mex recipes. I moved to Houston, TX 2 years ago and I found that people in the US normally calls Mexican food to the Tex-Mex food that\'s why I list what I consider REAL Mexican dishes that maybe, Eatingwell.com could put it here as a recipe:

    Chiles en Nogada (Puebla)
    Mole Poblano
    Huaxmole (Puebla)
    Chilate
    Pipian verde y rojo (Puebla)
    Pozole (Jalisco)
    Enchiladas Potosinas (San Luis Potosi)
    Cabrito (Nuevo Leon)
    Albondigas
    Tinga de Pollo
    Cochinita Pibil (Merida)

Among the delicious Antojitos Mexicanos (normally served as appetizers but that you could eat them as a main course and that are normally prepared using tortilla in different sizes) you\'ll find:
    Tlacoyos (Oaxaca)
    Flautas
    Chalupas
    Memelas
    Chilaquiles
    Quesadillas
Enchiladas (the real ones, not the fakes you see in those cheap Tex-Mex restaurants)
    Papas con chorizo
Queso fundido (con chorizo, very good)

    and more thing such as:
    Barbacoa (de hoyo)
    Consome de carnero
The classic Arrachera cut to make delicious tacos
    Frijoles puercos
    Frijoles charros

    mmhhh I am hungry.

Paisanos, add more things in here and help people to understand than Mexican food is more than what Taco Bell, On the Border, etc. offer in the US. If you want the real one, go to real Mexican Restaurants, own by real Mexican people, and with real Mexican ingredients...

    all said.

    Thanks,

    The Mexican food defender
