Astoundingly good for minimal effort, this makes an indulgent weekend breakfast or anyday dessert. A judicious smear of mascarpone (half the fat of butter) is part of the luxury, but even lighter low-fat cream cheese will work as well. The real secret is warming the berries just enough to make the flavor bloom and transform their juices into a rosy syrup.
Make Ahead Tip
Prepare the sauce (Step 2), cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 1 month. To reheat, microwave on High for about 1 minute (defrost first, if necessary).
You can alter this recipe very easily and save calories!
Use the whole wheat bread, use the marcapone cheese, but use only fresh strawberries on top mixed with lemon zest and a little lemon juice. It's refreshing and fabulous and a lot less calories!
It you want to splurge a little, switch the whole wheat bread for angel food or ound cake and grill it, it's AWESOME! Then it melts the marscapone, top with the fresh strawberries!!
Enjoy!!

This is a delicious dessert or indulgent breakfast. It has less sugar than most syrups and less fat/calories then most desserts. Plus its easy and fairly cheap! If you want to lower the sugar content you can use Splenda or any other sugar substitute.

Just thought I'd point out that the 3/4 cup of strawberries in each serving contains approximately 9 grams of sugar, and approximately 43% of that 21 g of sugars is natural fruit sugar.

This recipe tastes great, my family loved it. I wish we could just rate the recipe and save the nutrition lesson. Using natural healthy ingredients (yes even unprocessed sugars), and portion control have left me healthy and fit.
