  • Love artichokes!

    cmt226 - April 14, 2008 01:48:07 PM PST
Haven't tried this recipe yet...but I have never heard of using butter or mayo as a dip either. My mom got me hooked on artichokes as a kid and we scraped off the "meat" on the leaves and ate the heart-the best part-but our dip is parmesean cheese! Yum!! So we dip each leaf in the grated cheese as we eat it, then when we get to the heart we cut it up and toss it in the cheese!! ohh soo good! Think I may treat myself later this week!

i got hooked on fresh artichokes 50 years ago,i never trim the leafs just the stem,i rinse them out, toss them in a pot of boiling water, when a fork goes in the stem easy its ready,i only use salted butter as a dip as magirine just wont do,to watery,i nuke the butter but at a low level so as not to burn it,i peel, dip and skim the meat off the leafs, when i get to the heart i clean the fuzzy stuff and cut up the remaining meat and toss it in the bowel with the remaining butter, then i have to fight my kids for the goodies, got them hooked also like my mom did for me 50 years ago,,,

  • Basically Steamed Artichokes

    JohnEWadd - August 1, 2007 06:30:42 AM PST
This recipe is basically for steamed artichokes since most of the cooking is done in the Dutch oven. The only part of the artichoke that gets any "grilled" flavor are the parts that touch the grate... which is not much when you consider that most of the artichoke leaves do NOT touch the grill grate. Still, if you want that flair for your party attendees, this is a nice summer touch.

  • Artichokes w/ lemon

    CPS - June 11, 2008 03:00:45 PM PST
I've loved artichokes all my life - our family always serves it (after normal prep in water or grilled) with a dip of 1/3 melted butter, 2/3 lemon juice and as many chives as you can handle (fresh or dried). Delicious!

  • 24/7 artichokes

    ecruddick - April 27, 2008 05:47:44 PM PST
Artichokes are my fav food, and I make them many ways. my most recent creation is cutting one in half, scooping out the thistles and center leaves that have the points. I then rinse with water, sprinkle a little olive oil on the inside. i then sprinkle a variety of herbs or seasoning, plut them together, wrap in plastic wrap and microwave for 7-8 minutes. You can eat them now or place them on a grill for 1-2 minutes for a roasted flavor!! YUMMY!

  • How to eat an artichoke

    kingsley - January 14, 2008 11:30:28 AM PST
My Dad in New Orleans always ate it raw. You pull off one leaf at a time and dip it into vinegar. Then put the leaf into your mouth with a little piece sticking out. Bite down, and pull the leaf out, scraping all the "meat" off the leaf with your teeth. Toss the tough part after you've scraped whatever meat you can off.

  • sounds great!

    Merryl - August 7, 2007 07:38:25 PM PST
Hey Tammy...that depends on your preference. Many people eat them simply as described in this recipe (salt, pepper, lemon juice), some with a vinaigrette style dressing...my personal favorite is to dip the leaves in Hollandaise sauce (which is basically butter and lemon juice along with the egg yolks) Try them different ways and you'll probably find more than one you like! :)
As for grilling, I've never had them this way (only steamed)...will have to try on the next sunny day! I'm imagining needing a little extra lemon (and maybe melted butter?)...we'll see! Just make sure to discard any tough leaves from the outer layers too. :)

  • Steamed Artichokes

    beepure09 - April 1, 2008 01:08:45 PM PST
This recipe is really simple, fast and easy.... All you do is wash out your artichoke to make sure all the dirt is out and cut the stem to desired length... Next you put in a microwaveable bowl and put plastic wrap over and put in microwave for 5 mins. or so depending on the size... Take it out and enjoy; it is very good. If you like sauce with yours, you could try some fresh lemon juice with melted butter. It is very tasty and refreshing.... Hope you like it.....
