  • If you really want lo-cal cook-outs

    rlastfogel - July 6, 2007 03:32:02 PM PST
This is a great recipe - top with carmelized onions
for a real treat brown slowly in a olive oil spritzed pan. NOW for the real lo-cal option: Take a crisp whole large romain lettuce leaf and put your favorite condiments on the inside of the leaf and spread it out. Next place the burger of your choice on the leaf, top with sauted onions, mushrooms, peppers, pickles, raw onion, a huge slice of tomato - anything goes! Then fold the leaf around the whole thing and you are ready to eat! Keep the fold of the leaf on the bottom for neat eating. Just think; by omitting the blah bun you can have desert!

  • Delish

    Beth F - March 6, 2007 10:23:43 AM PST
i haven\'t personally tried my hand at this recipe, but there\'s a local eatery that has been making these burgers for who knows how long. It\'s usually a cheese and a veggie on the inside. i like the mushroom/Swiss combo myself (i have them put jalape?on top with the rest of the toppings). my s/o likes the cheddar/jalape?ombination. i can\'t remember how many other combinations they have, but all i\'ve tried are delish.

  • Feeling Blue? Try a blue cheese burger!

    barbwrd - March 5, 2007 04:10:10 PM PST
I have been putting a secret stash of blue cheese in the middle of burgers for years. A small amount of blue cheese cheese can pack a big punch in the middle of a burger -- you can even use crumbled blue. Just think about how great blue cheese is on a steak. Well, it is even better in a burger.

  • inside outburger

    richie l - May 19, 2007 11:44:40 AM PST
I use fuller fat beef as the fat cooks out but gives more flavour - and produces more smokiness on the bbq. Chopped parsley and/or chives in the meat mixture also enhances the flavour. - Salt is a no-no - it shrinks the meat and if really required should be put onto the finished burger.

If you put a little dint on either side of the burger with the back of a spoon and splash it with Worcestershire sauce, that\'s also a great plus.

Another great centre is bacon, or even combining the cheese and bacon together - and if you\'re having your burger in a bun, toast the buns on the bbq as well.

    Yummy scrummy.

  • You can also try this with Swiss

    kbs7007 - March 6, 2007 11:46:54 AM PST
I use Swiss cheese and grilled onions & mushrooms for stuffing, I also use A-1 for more flavor and taste bud impact. Best served on a fresh baked Kaiser or bulkie roll instaed of a plain old hamburger bun. Hot and Zesty pickles or Bread and Butter pickles on the side.....Maybe a bit of thousand island dressing...........WOW

    Brandon Janssen - May 20, 2007 04:06:11 PM PST
Been making this burger for 10 years and you cant go wrong with throwing bleu cheese crumbles in the center and then topping it with some bacon...Sometimes ill still throw a slice of good cheddar on top of the burger too

  • Italian Style

    dusty t - February 1, 2008 06:07:22 AM PST
I have been making these for a while, but I stuff them with mozzarella cheese, oregano, basil, and garlic. I also sear them in olive oil. When themeat is cooked all the way through (or how you like it) add some of your favorite marinara sauce, and add cheese to top of the burger patties. Allow the cheese to melt and the burger to mingle with the sauce for about 10 minutes Then put it all on a large piece of french bread. Thats my favorite way. Maybe its just the Italian in me. Enjoy.

  • Good Stuff

    dinidinipie - January 28, 2008 02:38:25 PM PST
My grandmother makes something like this called:
    Stuffed Hamburgers!

You put mushrooms and any cheese in the middle.
    Fry till brown.
Put in a huge pan and let sit in brown gravy (simmer) for about an hour.
Eat with potatoes and you have gravy already done.

    Yummy!

  • The grease??

    Claudia - January 27, 2008 06:04:58 PM PST
When I first saw this recipe on the Food Network, it looked terrific. However, common sense made me wonder if it would really be that terrific with the cheese locked inside due to the grease factor. So tonight I tried them anyway. Sure enough, for me, cheese needs to maintain it\'s integrity to add good flavor to a burger. When I made these, the cheese infused with the grease inside, liquified and drizzled out when we bit into them. The flavor of the cheese was significantly dulled. I made a few different types of burgers, but the best one was when I mixed taco seasoning with the meat, and stuffed the burgers with sharp cheddar and jalapenos. They had the most flavor.
