  • Great Stuff

    Tony Rivera - June 24, 2008 11:49:15 AM PST
I have been drinking this for years. Although I make mine a a little different. I eat alot of fruit and will throw just about any mixture of fruit that may be getting a little old into the blender. Typically when i do my grocery shopping I will take the fresh fruit and cut it up and put it in the freezer. Frozen fruit give it a texture I like better then room temp fruit. My typical recipe is as follows:

    1/2 cup apple juice
    1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup pinapple juice (you can use fresh cut pinapple)
1 - 1 1/2 cup Frozen Strawberries (cut off the leaves before freezing)
1 frozen banana (cut it up before you freeze it)
    1 cup non fat yogurt

You can use ice if you are going to use room temp fruit.

I always hate smoothie recipes that make 1 servings. You usually can\'t save these from day to day, can you?

  • lighter variation

    Aunt M.A. - June 24, 2008 10:58:48 AM PST
We have this exact same smoothie everyday, but use lite cranberry juice cocktail instead of orange juice ..less calories and even more antioxidants. We do use Splenda because my husband\'s diabetic. Very easy to make and more berry "smack".

  • Why do you need the extra sugar?

    llfungirl - June 24, 2008 10:35:27 AM PST
You don\'t need the extra sugar, the banana makes it sweet already.

Tip: Freeze bananas for an extra thick and creamy smoothie.

  • Even Better

    j_rosecrans - June 24, 2008 10:13:42 AM PST
I have a smoothie every morning, but I use 1/2 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup cold water, 1/2 cup frozen berries, 1/2 frozen banana, 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds, 1 scoop of whey protein powder. You get your omega 3\'s, protein, and very low sugar. It tastes great, and it keeps me satisfied for the whole morning.

  • Eat this for breakfast?

    Craig K - June 24, 2008 09:02:45 AM PST
If you are eating this much sugar whether natural or not, whether as honey, or banana, or right out of the bowl, be sure to see your doctor regularly and get ready for type II diabetes because that is where you are headed. Fresh whole fruit, whole grains, and nuts for breakfast and skip the sugar rush, no matter how you want to sell it.

  • Choose your battles....

    Erin - June 24, 2008 08:40:04 AM PST
While there is a lot of sugar in this recipe per serving, you have to consider that they are "healthier" more natural sugars that are coming from the berries and the banana. I would nix the OJ (unless 100% juice) and the sugar or Splenda. The yogurt will have sugar in it as well, so keep that in mind. If sugar is a major health concern for your personal diet, you may want to consider something else. But, there are a lot of vitamins and antioxidants in fruits. Like the title says, choose your battles!

  • Free OJ

    Pip - June 24, 2008 08:31:32 AM PST
As someone who isn\'t completely neurotic about counting calories, the nutrition value doesn\'t phase me so much. The smoothie was good, but I think next time I make it, it\'ll be sans OJ. The orange juice added too much sourness to the drink.

  • America Needs Help!!!!

    Kyle A - June 24, 2008 07:18:53 AM PST
Splenda instead of sugar, low fat yogurt instead of regular yogurt, can\'t the people of america splurge every once in awhile. Just to make sure the regular recipe tasted as horrible as I thought, I made the smoothie with the ingrediants it told me it was absolutely horrible, then i made it with real sugar, and regular yogurt, and it was fabulous and only had 150 calories! Bottom Line it is great recipe if it has sugar and regular yogurt.

  • no crash natural sugar

    stevenwhoelse - June 24, 2008 03:38:29 AM PST
you will not get a crash and burn, this is natural sugar found in fruit and vegetables. But it also contains many vitamins. Refined sugar is where you get your crash and burn because refined sugar has no minerals or vitamins and has to pull from the bodys own resources to digest it

  • Splenda contains arsenic

    prrecious22 - June 23, 2008 04:58:39 PM PST
There are no benefits to using Splenda over real sugar and it has arsenic, and who wants arsenic for breakfast? Not me!

  • way too much orange juice...

    niawest - June 19, 2008 11:20:41 PM PST
...and very little protein from the milk or yogurt. that much oj plus the fruit will send your insulin levels to the sky. You\'ll not only be hungry in a couple of hours you\'ll be starving and craving more carbs.

  • Alternative to sugar

    Sandy R - June 19, 2008 11:28:27 AM PST
I try to avoid sugar when I am dieting. Instead I will use 2 tsp. of orange blossom honey. And for an added boost, 1 capsul of ginsing, emptied into the blender. Lots of energy and plenty sweet!!

  • Splenda??

    cin_min - June 19, 2008 11:03:58 AM PST
I don\'t know about adding sugar at all.
I make my morning smoothie with all natural orange juice, 1 banana, and a handfull of strawberries, a couple of ice cubes, and blend!
Its sweet enough just as it is! And less calories than adding all that other stuff....

  • NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Brock T - June 19, 2008 09:59:57 AM PST
47 grams of sugar? For the first meal of the day? 4 grams of protein? Absolutely ridiculous suggestion for a breakfast smoothie.

    Here\'s a much better idea:

    8 oz. of skim milk
1/2 a cup of frozen berries (black, rasp, and blue)
    1/2 a cup of oatmeal
    1 scoop of whey protein

400 calories, 35 grams of good carbs, 5 grams of fat, 35 grams of protein.

The only question you might have is why so many calories. Your breakfast should be a decent sized meal. This meal gets your metabolism started and firing all day. Plus, it is rich in anti-oxidents (berries), calcium (milk), anti-cholesterol agents (oatmeal), and muscle preserving amino acids (whey protein).

Take your lunch and split it in half. Eat one serving at lunchtime, and the other serving three hours later. Three hours after that, eat your dinner. This way, your metabolism is firing all day. STAY away from all sugar. Exercise four or five days a week with weights and cardio depending on your weight training routine. Simple.

  • No Juice for Me!

    Princess Mommy - June 19, 2008 06:56:51 AM PST
Why juice? I like to go all calcium with my smoothies by using fat free vanilla yogurt, a splash of skim milk, blueberries (frozen), half a bananna, and a small squirt of honey. Throw in the ice and blend away. Delicious!

  • Sounds Tasty but not healthy at all!

    Manny C - June 19, 2008 06:38:03 AM PST
wow.....nutritious....are you serious, give me a break, for a health conscious person like my self why would I want to drink something with that much sugars and carbs with no protein. But I guess it would taste great right! nutritious what a joke.

  • Albeit fruit sugar...

    erichuge - June 19, 2008 05:49:29 AM PST
That is too much sugar for the morning.
Protein Protein Protein! Use non-fat milk instead of juice and a little chocolate protein powder and you will triple the delicious-ness and lose a lot of that sugar from the juice.
Make sure it is WHEY protein as that is the best source for making you lean. Soy protein is not that great at helping muscle replace fat.

  • Too much sugar`

    kim t - June 19, 2008 03:27:29 AM PST
Why on earth would you need OJ and all that fruit AND splenda? This si not "eating well." This is a pure sugar rush that is both unhealthy and fattening. Skip the OJ use water and a dash of unsweetened cranberry juice instead. Frozen berries are fine and give it that smoothie-like quality.

  • almost okay

    mgl1018 - June 18, 2008 06:51:03 PM PST
Shouldn\'t use splenda. Better stick with honey, or just let the natural sweetness of fruit come through. How could recipe be considered healthy when they\'re using Splenda? Silly...

  • Go ahead fatty

    rmas - June 18, 2008 06:24:12 PM PST
This smoothie is anything but a healthy drink. It is high in sugar, carbs, and more. It takes more than fruit to be healthy.

  • Tablespoon of Sugar?

    adam7nyc - June 18, 2008 05:40:27 PM PST
a recipe from a site called eatingwell advises people to put a tablespoon of sugar into a morning beverage, huh?

This recipe does not need sugar and it is just an example of why obesity is at an all time high.

People are not educated about proper nutrition at all, even at a "nutrition" publication.

And where is the protein? the building blocks of our bodies is the most important part of a morning meal

  • I make these all the times.

    Cochy - June 18, 2008 05:07:42 PM PST
I don\'t really use yogurt. There\'s not much need for it. It tastes just as good without! Splenda is great and definitely go for the Tropicana Light

  • Since when did OJ become evil?

    Suzi - June 18, 2008 05:05:55 PM PST
I can\'t help but notice all of the people who commented on replacing the orange juice in this smoothy with water, or tea, or something similar. Why in heaven\'s name would you do that? Orange juice is fabulously nutritious, full of flavanoids and other phytonutrients, as well as vitamins C, B6, and folic acid, not to mention potassium and magnesium. Then there\'s the fiber if you use fresh squeezed, or the stuff with lots of pulp. You\'re taking out a great deal of the nutrition from this drink if take it out.
