Less Calories and Carbs
ctatter2002 - March 9, 2007 10:21:21 AM PST
I do not use the orange juice or sugar. I use frozen berries, a couple tablespoons of yogurt, half of an over ripen banana that you otherwise would probably throw out to offset the tartness of the berries, and a little water to liquify it. The smoothie is creamy and sweet. Less calories and carbs.
With 47g of sugar and very, very little protein, you may as well drink a Coke for breakfast! Granted that the amount of sugar in this smoothie will get your heart started, but you\'ll get that classic crash and burn a couple of hours later. My breakfast smoothie is high-protein and low-fat/low-sugar. What little sugars are in it are complex, natural sugars from honey and fruit. The basic recipe comes from Oprah (search there). I add some plain soy yogurt to add creaminess. Yum!!
I have this smoothie almost everyday - except that I don\'t put orange juice in it, (juste a splash of milk) and instead of sugar, I use one teaspoon of honey.
It is just delicious and good for me!!! Smooooothie heaven!
You won\'t need sugar, splenda or any other sweetner, with the fruit & the yougurt it should be sweet enough. Do yourself a favor & skip the sugar & sweeteners in this one.
Try adding a protein supplement. I personally like Lean Body for Her, vanilla ice cream flavor. I use the protein, a cup of strawberries, 1 cup of ice and half a cup of WATER! only sugar is coming from the fruit! Very Yummy alot healthier then the above smoothie!
Great recipe; but why not streamline it! Substitute the Splenda with a product called Stevia; a plant derivative. 100% Natural with 0 calories, 0 chemicals, 0 glycemic index, and one packet contributes enough fiber as 4 bowls of cereal! Also, try Soy Vanilla Silk milk & you won\'t need to sweeten the brew... ; )
Yeah I agree with some of the people saying that that just a little too much sugar to be taking in in the morning. Your likely to get the sugar high and crash sensation a few hours later. I would cut out the sugar in the recipe and add noney with a few scoops of good old fashion whey protein.
I agree with the protein concerns...add a dash of soy or whey protein powder...so far the research has been good on Splenda, but a great alternative is Stevia Root...careful, use 1/2 of what the equivalence guides tell you to use.
I make a similar Smoothie every day, but without the sugar. I use a "supplement" powder called "Complete" by Juice Plus. It is amazing. The whole line of products by Juice Plus have really improved my health and the health of my family. Check it out!
Splenda is so chemically altered. The claims that it is safe for diabetics is scary, it is not a healthful product. Read up on Stevia. You can buy it at Trader Joe\'s, most health food stores and online. Or try raw, pure organic agave nectar.
I recently had a baby, and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my pregnancy. I was allowed 30 carbs per meal, with no more than half of those coming from fruit at one time, and was not allowed fruit for my first meal whatsoever. Now, I know that a \'normal\' pancreas doesn\'t need to be regulated this closely, but I mean 54 grams of carbs in ONE smoothie? I was also taught that OJ was the absolute worst possible fruit you could have when watching calories and sugar. The body processes it the same as a Coke or a candy bar. This is absolutely NOT a healthy drink!!!
To jump start your morning you need lots of protein not sugar. Carbs will slow you down and should be part of an evening meal. Better to use a flavored protein poweder like Spirutein with 14 grams of protein and then add 9 grams from a cup of soy milk and you have 23 grams to jump start your morning. Protein keeps the brain alert, carbs makes it sleepy. With that much protein and some frozen fruit added you will have a great health start to the day and one that will last.
That is WAY too much sugar. The recipe\'s use of Splenda is a total waste. Natural sugar is still sugar, and this would send a diabetic into a coma. Yummy, but there\'s nothing healthy about it for someone like me trying to fend off the type 2 diabetes that runs in the family. I\'ll have to pass.
like clint eastwood said in dirty harry. " there\'s enough sugar in my coffee ( SMOOTHY) to choke a horse. with all the fruit and juice why would u add more sugar? go ahead punk make my day.
This sounds like the smoothie I make, but I can\'t imagine why you\'d need sugar (or Splenda ... yuk) The fruit makes it plenty sweet. (of course I dont like very sweet things)
This works, but you can definitely cut it down even more and still be full! I put 3/4 - 1 Cup of Fat free Yogurt, a frozen banana, frozen strawberries and voila! it\\'s a shake! you can add a splash of water or milk to make it a lil bit creamier, but I never really need too. I have this every morning, and for an added kick I add a couple tsps of sugar free, fat free pudding mix, like chocolate, so I feel that I\\'m having a chocolate shake! DEELish!
It\\\'s a great recipe but instead of OJ I use V8 Splash Lite. Low in sugar and also has vegetable juice in it. I also throw in about a half scoop of vanilla protein, 20-25grams worth. I use fat-free plain yogurt, blueberries and strawberries mostly. I drink it on my way to the gym to help start out my morning. I\\\'m a teacher and a coach, I workout at 5 in the morning, the only time of day I have. A protein bar after the workout and then some fruits, vegetables and almonds to snack on are great to keep me tell 11AM.
You are better off just spraying yourself with DDT it will kill you quicker. (splenda is a labratory mishap when trying to make a new form of DDT and is quite chemically similar and bad for your health and not a relative of sugar as they so claim) As far as the rest of the recipe goes I would add some spinach or other greens to it and maybe rather than sugar go with some Agave nectar (which is suitable for vegans as well as diabetics and tastes really great)
mine is better, and healthier....and tastes YUMMY!!!

this one is the best!!
one banana 1 cup blueberries, frozen(or berries of choice) 1/4 to a 1/2 cup VANILLA soy milk 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup carrot juice(or pieapple, but more sugar) (amount of liquid depends on how thick you like your smoothie)
whirrr and your good to go!!! makes two 6----ish ------ounce smoothies.....
I tend to have this shake often in the morning - however the sugar is a bit high. Add a Banana and replace the OJ with some Ice cubes and water. I also like to put 2 table spoons of Ground Flax seed for a nutty flavor.
well it looks like everyone already knows nutrition, yet America is #1 in multiple FAT related dieseas. Thumbs up to evyone who has found a way to subdue the "sweet-tooth" in a sensible way. Cheers!! love the comments
My favorite smoothie uses a cup of milk as it\'s base. You can do nonfat, or whatever you drink. Soy, rice, whole, etc Then you put in a half a scoop of some high quality protein powder, some low fat all natural (not the over sugared kind) yogurt. Half a frozen banana and about 5 strawberries, or peach slices, or berries. I buy them fresh then freeze them if we dont end up eating them all fresh. I usually add a few more icecubes, and voila! Smooth, creamy smoothie, high in protien and moderate in carbohydrates!
Seriously, why in the world would you use fresh orange juice and berries and then mess it up with splenda????? Ideally you should sweeten it with perhaps apple juice but even better would be Local Honey - Good and Good fer Ya!!!!!
