  • Taco Shells

    smithj1216 - December 4, 2006 02:03:46 PM PST
Be sure to select taco shells with corn oil, and not partially hydrogenated oils. Some taco shells are loaded with trans fat!

  • Talk about gross. Yuck

The Most Elusive Fishie... - June 4, 2007 02:01:50 PM PST
I\'m hispanic and my father\'s family came over to the US to New Mexico even before it was a state, so I know a thing or two of authentic Mexican food. This doesn\'t even come freaking CLOSE! This has to be one of the nastiest recipes I\'ve read in a long time. Everything was doing okay until we started to add sugar (?) and vinegar (!), not to mention the tomato sauce and all the other junk. This is just plain ol\' yucky. 73 ground beef well drained cooked with comino (cumin), oregano, corriander, yellow onion, and garlic put into a corn tortilla (those pre-packaged taco shells are horrific!) topped with mild cheddar or COLBY cheese!, tomatoes, and avocado. Plain, simple, takes about 20 minutes to cook everything. Notice no sugar, salt, etc.

Cooking with all this extra sugar makes people want sweet foods and is a lot less healthy for you.

  • Who even said this was healthy?

    fooootos - February 26, 2007 09:57:44 AM PST
People, who even said this was supposed to be a healthy nutritional meal. This recipe was provided under the category of Most Popular, not Most Health for you. What do you expect from a meal that has cheese, sour cream, shells cooked in oil, and ground beef.

  • Who said this was healthy?

    Dave - February 23, 2007 10:51:23 AM PST
Tacos are not known to be healthy. So why say this meal isn\'t healthy. So think before you say something. And anyways. The recipe was great.

  • Serving Size, to the reviewer

    chickie - January 4, 2007 12:37:01 PM PST
What they mean is that it servs 4 (persons) yeilds 8 tacos, they are assuming that a person will eat 2 tacos each, therefore determining the serving size! whatever you were thinking it makes 8 tacos, no matter how many people are eating!!

  • Try draining the fat off

    kjack0044 - August 11, 2007 02:49:44 AM PST
These tacos were good but a little watery. Next time I\'ll drain the fat off after cooking the meat. This will concentrate the flavors and also reduce the fat.

  • tacos are suppose to be simple food

    Rachel C - July 17, 2007 03:24:50 PM PST
The best tacos are the ones with the simplest spices
    Ground beef
    New Mexico Chili Powder
    Garlic Salt
    Onions
then add all the toppings you want.

    Simple!

  • Great taste!

    lokobrenda - August 10, 2009 03:44:51 PM PST
We really liked the flavor of the meat with all the seasonings. The meat mixture was a little too liquidy for our taste. I\\'d probably try less chicken broth next time.
We also made our own taco shells--made the dinner more fun!
My suggestion is to try it with different toppings as well. My hubby doesn\\'t like avacados, but loved them on these tacos. We also got pico instead of cutting up tomatoes and cilantro. Tomatillo salsa is good with it as well!
You could use the meat for tostadas too!

  • Some things are better left uncooked

    johnnyfr2 - June 16, 2009 01:22:13 PM PST
After eating a couple tacos from a rickety old taco stand in Frontera Mexico for 40 cents apiece, I realized that there really is no point in trying to recreate something that has real authenticity. Those taco\\'s could not be matched anywhere outside of Mexico and trying to do so would be like paying a lot of money to go see a fake copy of the Mona Lisa.

It would be a waste of time and money to make this recipe. They don\\'t even look like tacos.

  • Very Good AMERICAN Tacos

    arieldiego - May 7, 2009 03:16:38 PM PST
Not really mexican, the only thing remotely mexican about this recipe are the tortillas. Although these are good for a meal but very americanized mexican cuisine.

Lettuce on Tacos is a no no. I compare it to when I see mexicans put mayonaise on a Hot Dog or worse Ketchup on Pizza. WOW !!!!

  • Sounds good But ....

    sainte49 - May 7, 2009 12:03:12 PM PST
Why would you use 90% lean beef, when 80 or 85 % is far cheaper , has more taste, and the fat can simply be drained off ....I mean this isn\\'t exactly a \"lite\" recipe anyway, so the little remaining fat would only add flavor ....

  • I have to agree

    undefeated_panthers - May 7, 2009 11:31:59 AM PST
what is up with all the ingredients? in my opinion the taco is the Mexican version of the hamburger and you dont need a lot to make a hamburger or taco good.

also i would stick with lean ground beef for tacos. i have made turkey burgers and they were good, but when i used ground turkey for tacos it was like eating tacos with sand in them. this shouldnt be a big problem unless you plan on eating tacos for every meal.

  • NOT AUTHENTIC TACOS

    Marta - May 5, 2009 02:20:31 PM PST
Authentic tacos, made in a small, soft corn tortilla of grilled beef or chicken can be healthy, they are just topped with fresh made salsa and cilantro and onios, add a drop of lime and they are delicious.
I don\\'t know where all these hard taco shells come from sure don\\'t come from Mexico. If you go there, you can\\'t find such kind of \"taco\"

  • NOT tacos!!!

    audnorge - March 10, 2009 03:15:45 PM PST
Tomato sauce in tacos? WTF? Mexican food and real Texas chili con carne, etc. is red due to the chile rojo, not tomatoes. When you see tomato sauce added to the recipe, you know some Yankee is playing pretend Mexican food expert.

  • The most IDIOTIC fishie.

    lchiang00 - January 30, 2009 01:27:43 AM PST
MY FAMILY\\'S FROM MEXICO, I KNOW ABOUT MEXICAN FOOD! BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. It\\'s a standard Americanized ground beef taco recipe. High in fat, and not \\'real\\' mexican food. And if you expect it to be, then you\\'re obviously an ignorant.....well just ignorant.
It\\'s good though. Crispy shells, tender ground beef, sprinkled mine with lettuce, and onions. Very yummy. I toast my corn tortillas in the toaster oven at 350 F for 5 minutes so there\\'s not as much fat in the shell. No oil necessary.
Anyhow when I want real mexican food I go to the taqueria, not taco bell. That\\'s like saying, "OH SH)T! This sweet and sour pork recipe doesn\\'t look like authentic Chinese food! Woe!"
And let\\'s stop reviewing and giving stars to food we haven\\'t tried

  • Way to increase nutrition

    celestial_fireflies - May 5, 2008 05:17:37 PM PST
I loved this recipe. I did use green and red leaf lettuce in place of the iceberg, as these types of lettuce have more nutrients than iceberg. I also replaced the beef with a mixture of pork and white meat chicken. I pay more attention to the nutritional value of food, as well as fats, carbs, etc. I try to adhere to the food pyramid as much as possible and just adjust my calorie intake. I love the recipes from your site because they are very easy to adjust to fit a persons diet.

    waltercorreaiii - May 5, 2008 04:00:40 PM PST
i like tacos but do i necessarily have to buy all the spices separately? i just can\'t buy a taco spice mix. if i bought everything on this list i would be $50 poorer.

  • Other suggestions

    Renee - May 5, 2008 01:12:41 PM PST
You can use shredded roast beef, left over or made just for this meal. I will put an inexpensive roast in the slow cooker with 1/4 c red wine vinegar, bay leaf, onion and garlic in the morning. I shred it while i am making the side dishes. I fry the taco shell with the meat and cheese inside. Use good corn tortillas, try to avoid mission brand, they use peanut oil or something. They have a off flavor. I only use a small amount of oil in the saute pan, just about 1/2c, and cook the tortillas till they hold their shape.
