This sound like it would be really good. I\'m going to have to try it with the cheese. Also, someone said about adding bacon which sounds yummy too!

  • Delicious...

This is my favorite holiday dish next to mac \'n\' cheese. We usually add bacon bits to it and spices to give it a different taste. I\'ve never done it with the cheese before. Maybe i\'ll try it and see how it taste that way.

  • Mmmm... Good and easy!

I made this for dinner the other night for my bf because he had never had a green bean casserole before. I used cream of chicken soup instead because neither of us like mushroom or celery. It was actually VERY good (and neither of use usually like vegetables... but we\'re runners so we stay skinny anyway). It may not be the most healthy, but oh well. Get out and exercise!

  • Close, but no cigar

I love GB casserole, but this recipe is a little "skinny" compared to the recipe that\'s been in our family for decades. We\'re a family of hearty eaters and this casserole holds up to our desire for a hearty side dish.

6 cans of cut green beans
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of celery soup
    8 oz shredded cheddar cheese
    1 can sliced water chestnuts
1 large can cheddar cheese fried onions

Mix the beans, soup, water chestnuts, half the cheese, and half the fried onions and bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Top with remaining cheese and fried onions and bake for another 10 minutes.

If you want a satisfying side dish that results in no leftovers, give this one a shot.

  • Pretty good

I made this for Thanksgiving and it came out quite well. I used more onions on top then it called for, but that was the only change I made. I will make this again.

  • Another Variation

    Lisa - November 24, 2008 06:37:29 AM PST
I like to use French cut green beans (little slivers) or for color variety, use one can of yellow wax beans and two cans of kitchen cut green beans.

Another way to change it up is to use Golden Mushroom soup. The colors are a bit startling, but the taste is great.

I love green bean casseroles! I have also used the Cheese flavored French Fried Onions with a can of cheddar cheese. It is delicious! I will definitely have to try it with bacon! Sounds yummy!

  • Old recipe

This recipe has been on the french fried onion container for years. We always use Cream of Mushroom soup. Adding cheese is different.

  • A twist

    share201 - December 12, 2007 12:19:38 PM PST
This is a great recipe. Since I\'m allergic to onions, what I do is use Cream of Chicken soup instead, then I add potatoe sticks (the ones in the can Pic Niks) for the crispy texture. It is really good this way.

  • Try this...

    Patrick - December 5, 2007 02:38:39 PM PST
If you loathe celery as much as I do, try substituting the Cream of Celery soup for Cream of Mushroom. It\'s tasty! Oh and I guess you can add a stalk or two of celery (for taste).

  • YUM-O !!

    Miss Coco - November 23, 2007 08:54:11 AM PST
I love green bean cassorole and I have found a new twist. I add Carmalized Vidalia Onions, I add sweetness and texture to this dish. I also use cream of mushroom soup. I will have to try the cheese. It sounds like it would be "DELISH!!"

  • YES THERE ARE SEASONINGS!!

    DIANE - November 19, 2007 08:29:11 PM PST
To the person who thinks this recipe sounds bland, have you ever had cream of celery soup or french fried onions? Thats where all the seasonings come from. Also the cheddar cheese adds alot to the flavor. This recipe tastes great but is a little high on fat: 11gms. per serving.

  • Cheese?

    Jennifer Anne - November 19, 2007 11:18:31 PM PST
I LOVE this recipe! However I have never put cheese in it. You can skip on the cheese for a lower fat meal.
I\'m only giving it 4 stars because I think the cheese would ruin it
