Your Food Cravings Explained and Contained

At four o'clock I feel a very specific tug. It's a chocolate tug. I try to keep a bar in my desk drawer. Plan B is the candy bowl by the Yahoo! receptionist. Plan C involves hollering from my cube to anyone who might hear. Sometimes a good friend answers with a life-saving mini Twix or individually wrapped Hershey's Krackle. What I want to know even more than who has chocolate is why do I need it so badly? Neal D. Barnard, M.D. knows. He is a nutrition researcher and the president and founder of the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). He also wrote Breaking the Food Seduction:The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings.

Why we crave chocolate, sugar, cheese, and meat:
All four of these foods are addictive for the same reason. They have an opiate effect on the brain, which means they may have a calming effect that our bodies like. These opiates are produced in the brain as sugar or chocolate touch your tongue. Meat works similarly. For cheese, the opiates are actually in the dairy protein, casein. These opiates take a little longer to work their magic as they are released during the digestion.

Why we crave salty foods:
Salty foods are not really addictive; they don't have a particular effect on the brain. But people become habituated to the taste of a certain amount of salt on the taste buds, and they tend to object when given less salt.

When cravings intensify:
Cravings can strengthen in the winter. The shorter, darker days cause the body to crave sugar and starches, both of which tend to cause the brain to produce serotonin -- the mood-boosting neurotransmitter. Cravings can also get stronger for women during the week before their menstrual periods, due to the effect of shifting estrogen levels.

Want to conquer your craving?
1.  Start with a healthy breakfast. It reduces cravings later in the day.

2.  Use foods to hold blood sugar steady. This means emphasizing low-glycemic-index foods, such as beans, vegetables, fruit, and pasta to keep blood sugar from going on a roller coaster (which can be caused by white bread and sugar, for example) that can trigger changes.

3.  Dieters: Use the Rule of Ten. If you are dieting, be sure not to starve yourself, because extreme hunger triggers cravings. Eat AT LEAST 10 calories per pound of your ideal weight per day.

4.  If you crave a food every day at the same time, plan an activity, such as a walk or visit with a friend, that is inconsistent with eating.

5.  Have regular exercise and rest.

6.  Use social support. Let your family and friends know that you need help.

7.  Take advantage of other motivators. Young people can be motivated to avoid meat because of concerns about animals or the environment. A married man might avoid junk food if he remembers that he needs to stay well to take care of his family.

When I am craving junk food, taking a nap usually wipes it out. This leads me to believe my cravings are mostly caused by fatigue.

I'm shocked that this article mentions women menstrating, but not pregnant women and their cravings.

It has been shown that when meat and certain fiber foods such as sweet potatoes were introduced into the diet of certain cannibal tribes then cannibalism began to cease. Often times our crave is because of a need or necessity.

Use moral support???? I really dont think is necessary to ask for help just because you crave something. In my opinion you should satisfy your craving just do it with moderation.

"This means emphasizing low-glycemic-index foods, such as beans, vegetables, fruit, and pasta" Pasta is not low-glycemic. It's made from white flour, the same stuff that makes white bread bad for you. The rest of the recommendation is correct though.

While it's at the very end of the article (#7), thank you very much for mentioning that some people avoid meat to help the environment. The farming and manufacturing of meat is one of the single largest causes of air/water pollution, water usage, and rainforest destruction, and this fact is almost always missing from corporate media and the minds of uninformed consumers.

Moderation is an excuse to continue poor habits moderately. If truth be told that casein, meat, and processed chocolate acts as an OPIATE, then perhaps these foods aren't the way to go. Good information in the article. It's up to us readers to take it a step further.

To jippyjayhawk: The only reason that you don't feel hungry after you sleep is because your body release certain hormones when you fall asleep.

If I am really having trouble with a craving I chew gum. The minty flavor wipes out my desire to eat anything else because it wont mix well.

My favorite chocolate is called "Ma-gupta" by the Batswani people. It's made from milk of a virgin, hand-slapped cocoa and eggs from the Grissel Bird. You can not beat it, trust me. Once Ma-gupta hits the stores, the rest of the companies will be OUT OF BIZNESS!!! PS - Ladies, control yourselves before your huzbinds leave you. Thanks.

jippyjayhawk, I would have to agree. I get cravings late in the evening, and if I just drink some water and go to bed, I feel fine the next morning, as opposed to when I weaken to the cravings, I tend to wake up with food hangover from eating late.

There's another reason people might have meat cravings that seems to escapes the minds of PETA and ultra-environmentalists: Human physiology is DESIGNED for the inclusion of meat in the diet; people are only vegetarian by choice, but biologically we require meat. Secondary sources of those protiens are just that, secondary.

Meat and dairy are also addictive and cause weight gain due to the presence of recombinant bovine growth hormone, which is injected into cows so that they will produce more milk and grow larger.
