Distilled water is usually less than $1 per gallon and it always tastes good for coffee, or any other recipe that calls for water. The opaque bottles are re-usable for those water dispensers ($.25-$.40 per gallon) at grocery stores. Just don't use a clear plastic bottle: they degrade after a few uses and pollute the contents. Also, a basket filter is cheaper and less wastefull than a paper towel for the french press users who need them. Try pushing slowly on the screen.

I've been grinding away at med to high priced off-the-counter coffee beans and think I will try fresh ground from the store. Better water = better coffee. Thanks for tips, including commenters. j

Actually, do not use distilled or reverse osmosis water for coffee or even for drinking. Those forms of water are too 'aggressive' and they have no minerals in suspension. They will over extract the coffee grounds and cause a harsh flavor. I have also been told they can pull minerals out of your body, which I believe since I know that RO water can eat a lot of things. When cities use RO they add minerals back into the water. The water you want to use should be good filtered or bottled water. The SCAA has a standard of how many ppm the mineral content should be, so you can look into that if you really want to get exact.

The hostility of some of the comments shock me. Coffee is different for everyone. Some only need it to wake up and others simply enjoy the complexity of the flavour notes in different blends/ roasts/ origins. The brewing method IS important to someone looking to enjoy all coffee has to offer. After all there is a reason why sommeliers taste wine out of glass and not paper cups.

Folgers definately makes the perfect cup of coffee, great way to start a day before eating a perfect breakfast meal from McDonalds. For lunch I like to get a perfectly amazing feast from BurgerKing and in the evenings I get a perfect (and very authentic) Mexican dinner from TacoBell before I go home and drink my perfect beer - Budwieser of course.

This method sounds really good. It's just that I'm too fricken lazy to go through all those steps. I just throw some in the coffee maker and turn it on! But the ground coffee is good. I can't live without my morning cup before I go to work!!!!

I always have my cook prepare my coffee and have my maid serve me in the study. The butler lays out my clothes while the maid takes away the empty coffee cup. I use the Parisian french press because it's so inexpensive, only about $900, Who is this person???

IN REGARD TO YOUR COFFEE MAKING, AS A FORMER CATERER AND MAKING COFFE WE USED THE EGG SHELLS IN THE COFFEE GROUNDS IN LARGE POTS WE COOKED THE WATER IN TO BOILING POINT . THEN LET IT STAND FOR A FEW MINUTES AND THENWE TOOK OUT THE GROUNDS PUT THEM IN THE EMPTY COFFEE CAND AND USED THEM FOR OUR FLOWERS IN OUR GARDEN WE DIDN'T WASTE ANY THING. THIS WAS GIVEN TO ME AS I LEARNED THIS FROM A POLISH CATERER. AND MAKES EXCELLENT COFFEE . THE BEST COFFEE I LIKE IS THE COLUMBIAN OR THE KONA COFFEE. BUT ARE DELICIOUS . BUT YOU MUST START WITH COLD WATER. ENJOY

I thought it was a good article. I love coffee and tea as well, and I have always wondered if the French Press would brew a better coffee. I will give it a try. Thank you!

I use a French press every morning, takes time but i love my coffee. Go to TJMaxx and get a press for under $19.00 great coffee beans is at trader Joes or " Jose coffee at cosco" . Not bitter or over roasted like STARSUCKS ( starbucks) I hate that place. Their mix cold drinks are over 700 calories! Coffee is always bitter and over roasted. A fast food coffee place!

My first choice of coffee is Illy coffee, you can buy it at whole foods super markets or world market ( cost plus stores). The illy company take coffee as an art, slow roast coffee is the best. Never ever a bitter acidy taste like " starsucks "( starbucks). I saw a documented film on coffee and Illy has a " coffee tasting just as if was wine. Its down to a Fine art in coffee making. Starbucks is a fast food coffee place and most people in the USA do not know the fine art of coffee or a real good coffee. If they like starbucks than you know you are " fast food drinkers" .

I use my Cuisinart Grind'n'Brew for morning coffee but have a travel mug sized Bodum french press for the office. Spring water is pre-heated in our water cooler so this is a snap for me. I cannot lie & say it takes out all the grounds like I would prefer but as long as you take the first and last sips cautiously, it is simply the best coffee you can get. Much better than the Senseo I was using!

Coffee drinkers: please don't leave your smelly old half-empty cup of morning coffee on your desk so that the nasty odor spreads to everyone else's workspace. Also, carry a few sticks of gum to mask your coffee breath. Ugh. Fresh coffee scent: good. Old coffee scent: PUKE! Tea is wayyyyyyyyyy better!

My mother made the worst coffee in the world. It was cheap, weak, and made with re-used filters (she was Depression-era). So I'm a coffee fanatic. Sometimes I like to use the press, sometimes the Melita drip pot, and sometimes an electric drip coffeemaker. The method you describe sounds just perfect for a press. I'll try it step by step and not waste the time going out of my way to drive to a Starbuck's and get an expensive cup of java. Am I missing something? I'd much rather have my good coffee at home.

For a satisfying cup of coffee , drive to a McDonald's, preferably somewhere between home and work. Order a small or medium cup of coffee. Request two packs of Splenda. Stir sweetener into coffee. Enjoy.

I like a lighter roast and freshly finely ground beans. I use the coffee press then filter method, but the most important factor is freshness.
