The Indonesian Avocado Shake!

The first time I discovered that avocados could be made into a sweet recipe of any type was in an Indonesian restaurant in Southern California a few years ago.  Before that, I had only seen avocados prepared in savory recipes such as guacamole or salads, and I had always thought of it as a vegetable.  Avocados are actually fruits, as they have a large pit inside, surrounded by flesh, and they grow on trees.  In a number of countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Brazil, and Jamaica, avocados can be eaten as a sweet treat such as in shakes or ice cream.  Its smooth, creamy, subtle flavor makes it a wonderful ingredient for rich and cool sweets.  As soon as i tried the avocado shake, my perception of what an avocado could be changed, and now it's my absolute favorite milkshake flavor.  This recipe is delicious and foolproof.  Since avocados are very high in potassium, and are a good source of the B vitamins, vitamins E, K, and folate, and since the shake tastes equally delicious made with low fat milk, I feel great about drinking it.  Emily Takara, the restaurant's owner, gave this recipe to me.  It's bound to surprise and delight you!

Recipe

1 Hass avocado
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
2 cups milk (whole or low fat)
32 oz. (4 cups ice cubes or crushed ice)
Chocolate or coffee syrup (optional)

 1. Put all the ingredients in a blender, adding the ice last.  (You might want to wrap the ice in a clean dish towel & crush it with a hammer if your food processor can't handle large ice cubes.)

2. Process for about 30 seconds, until it has the consistency of a milkshake.

3. For a fun variation, dip the rim of the glass into chocolate or sweet coffee syrup.  Then fill with the avocado smoothie.

Of course! The avocado shake! Yumyum. I live in the Philippines and shake stalls appear in every corner as the summer starts (which is now). Even with numerous other milk shake flavors to choose from, like mango or strawberry, avocado is still remains one of the top favorites. Mmmm i love avocado shake!

So weird. I just this evening in a restaurant in Boulder had a spicy tomato soup with chunks of raw avocado floating in it. The contrast between the spicy, tangy broth and the rich, mellow avocado was surprising. Avocado's being versatile -- what a concept!

Oh? On the contrary I never know this kind of drink (!) I am Indonesian and have spent 90% of my life in Indoensia ... travelling here and there, but never I found this avocado with looooooooot of milk like that! From where origine? I wonder how that restaurant in California got that recipe. Thought it's just their creativity? I mean ... they just made it up! But we do usually put avocado in fresh drinks: blend with traditional ice cream called Es Puter (coconut milk replacing milk); blend with ice cream and strong coffee; mix with others tropical fruits, syrup and cubed ices ... Well, actually yes, avocados could be made into so plenty of sweet recipes in Indonesia. The best for summer days!

It is a very popular drink here in Indonesia (in every food stall imaginable) and I just found out that it's not common in other parts of the world :) Combining it with coffee syrup is indeed the best variation..
