Beach Yums! HG's Guide to Guilt-Free Beach Snacks

When you're beach-bound, guilt-free snacks are a must. Hungry Girl has put together a list of great foods to toss in a bag for a hot summer day out, plus some tips 'n' tricks, too...

Hard Bars & Bites - While there are some chewy baked snacks bars we happily chew on in air-conditioned environments, the crunchy ones are your best bet for outdoor eating. You should also avoid ones with coating (like peanut butter or chocolate), 'cuz those'll become sadly misshapen once the heat hits 'em. HG's picks? All-Bran Brown Sugar Cinnamon Snack Bites (1 pouch = 110 calories, 5g fat, 5g fiber) are sweet, crunchy, and packed with fiber (to help fill you up). Plus they're portion-controlled and portable! Another beach-friendly HG favorite? Special K Vanilla Snack Bites (1 pouch = 90 calories, 2g fat, <1g fiber). They rock our world! Love bars? Try Kashi's TLC Crunchy Granola Bars (2 bars = 180 calories, 6g fat, 4g fiber). Those are crammed with protein and taste great.

Fresh Fruit - Go for firm, easy-to-eat fruits like pears and apples. Skip anything sticky, soft, or hard to handle, like melon, berries, oranges, and kiwi. The sticky stuff will leave you a mess, the softies could easily be smooshed in your beach bag, and the tough-to-peel stuff will leave you more likely to reach for a cookie than pick a fight with your fruit.

Portable Protein - Sadly, tuna salad and turkey slices won't last long outside the cool comfort of your fridge. But there are some excellent alternatives -- no cooler required. Stock up on low-cal dehydrated protein-y snacks, like soy jerky, turkey jerky, and beef jerky. A company called Tasty Eats makes soy jerky in a slew of crazy-good flavors that even diehard beef-jerky fans will love -- trust us, we wouldn't jerk you around. (HG Heads-Up: Stick with the originals and avoid the unsweetened Chick'N flavors, which aren't nearly as good.) A half-ounce serving of each of the original flavors has just 40 - 45 calories and <1g fat (plus 1g of fiber). Feel free to polish off a full 3-serving pack throughout the day. Our pals over at Oh Boy! Oberto now make portion-controlled packs -- called 100 Calorie Jerky Bites -- in Beef (1g fat) and Turkey (1.5g fat) varieties. Those are great, too!

Other Beach Snacking Tips

* Be sure to pack napkins and maybe even a few wet naps. And don't forget about a closeable bag for garbage -- you'll keep the birds at bay that way.

* Freeze a bottle of water the night before your day in the sun. Pack it in addition to a bottle of cold water, and you'll have another icy cold bottle ready once the midday heat hits.

* Don't forget your sunblock! Okay, technically not a snacking tip. But if you develop a nasty sunburn, you may be tempted to drown your sorrows in a giant tub of ice cream or a bag of greasy potato chips, which is definitely not a good idea.

Mmm, I keep forgetting about soy jerky -- great idea! I also tend to pack dried fruit -- like mangos & apricots -- to avoid the squoosh, or I'll pop some grapes in a tupper to keep them from getting mashed. My favorite beach munch is a tube of FF Sour Cream & Onion Pringles and a cold soda!

What about kids? My 2 year old is not going to eat Soy Jerky. Be realistic. What happened to PBJ and Pretzels? What about Capri Suns or Juice boxes? Easy suggestions, stuff you already have in your pantry. I know when I go to the beach I don't want to make a trip to the market for edemame and soy jerky.....give me a break people!

I agree, it does not take a rocket scientist to know that tuna and the beach dont go hand in hand. For the kids, (i have 5) I usually pack a cooler with capri sun, pretzels, fruit roll ups, etc. For the adults, we have bottled water, baked layes, or like Magpie said, fat free pringles.

Living in south florida, I'm always at the beach. Frozen bottles of water are a life saver in the heat. I also like to bring cubed watermelon. It stays cold and is very hydrating in the hot sun.

One thing to add. Recent studies show that freezing plastic may be harmful, and that freezing plastic water bottles, though convinient, is not a good idea and could be dangerous.

One more thing to add. Mythbusters did research on the freezing water bottles thing, and it's not harmful. Also, convenient is spelled with two e's. No offense. And BTW billageegranite, you didn't have to read it if it's a big tub of lame. And everyone else who said that kind of thing, I mean, "a five year old could pick those foods"? That's just plain rude. Someone was just trying to help out.

I'm with jennason21--what's up with you people who read these articles, then, all they do is bash the writer & complain. You just need to get a life. Some of us enjoy these tips, and the others should just keep their big mouths shut.

Maybe a five year old could come up with this list, but the average person doesn't have as much sense as a five year old- go to the beach and see how many people are trying to eat tuna, yogurt, chocolate, and other foods that aren't meant for the beach.

I love taking watermelon to the beach. I just chunk it before I go, and store it in tupperware in the cooler. If my daughter gets sticky, so what, she can get in the water and rinse off. It's so refreshing.

Good tip's, but if you take a coolier with you alot of things are possible to cary with you like tuna ect...I agree with the thought about people bashing the wrighters. If they don't want to read this stuff why are they in here reading it? There are other things for them to be doing. My thereo is that they just want something to complain about and this is as good as any. Speak your mind, be true to yourself and your own values and ignore people who try to drag you down.

boiled eggs and potatoes are really good at the beach. you can eat the potatoes with the skin, just add a little salt, very filling. watermelon, most definately. and to be honest we can just leave the soy jerky at home. lol

I haven't been to the beach in years!!! I will have to go on my next vacation from Iraq!!! My favorite snack to eat at the beach is "dog chow". You know, that stuff you make with Chex cereal... YUM!!! That stuff is soo good!! Probably not too healthy though... But these are great tips anyway! Thanks Hungry Girl!!! You rock! :)
