SIX SECRET GUILT-FREE RESTAURANT PICKS From Hungry Girl!

Eating out guilt-free doesn't have to mean ordering a plate of lettuce. Check out HG's latest rockin' list of guilt-free restaurant options that taste almost too good to be true -- and some super-secret tips you won't read about on any menu....

Romano's Macaroni Grill - Pollo Magro (Skinny Chicken)
(entire entree with sides: 410 calories, 6g fat, 990mg sodium, 26g carbs, 8g fiber, 39g protein)

Most of the items on Macaroni Grill's menu wind up on one of our lists of shockingly high-cal and fattening restaurant dishes. But we're super-excited to tell you about this slimmed-down option at the pasta-happy place. Grilled chicken breast with a sweet honey balsamic glaze is served up with sides of grilled asparagus and broccoli. And 410 calories for a meal at an Italian eatery is mere pocket change from your calorie piggy bank. But don't confuse this diet-friendly dish with their ordinary Honey Balsamic Chicken. That entree's packing an insane 1,190 calories and 59 fat grams!

Applebee's - Italian Chicken & Portabella Sandwich
(entire entree w/ sides: 360 calories, 6g fat, 11g fiber)

Wowowow! The 'Bee's recently added a few new items to their Weight Watchers menu. The standout newbie is this marinated chicken breast on a whole-wheat bun, complete with sauteed portabellas and chunky marinara dipping sauce. Plus, it comes with a side of fresh fruit. We recommend this one for people on Weight Watchers, people who count calories, and people who simply dig delicious chicken sandwiches. Go, Applebee's!

Chili's - Guiltless Black Bean Burger on a Whole Wheat Bun
(entire entree w/ sides: 410 calories, 8g fat, 1,490mg sodium, 57g carbs, 25g fiber, 29g protein)

This is definitely one of the best veggie burgers ever to be served at a restaurant. It's packed with filling fiber and tons of flavor; even meat lovers will dig this meatless wonder. Plus it comes served with heaps of tasty steamed veggies topped with parmesan cheese. The trick here is ordering the massive (and massively delicious) black bean patty on one of their unbuttered whole-wheat buns instead of the "Big Mouth Bun". That right there saves you 240 calories and 4 grams of fat! Serious calorie-counters can skip the bun altogether and the whole meal will clock in at only 320 calories and 6 grams of fat. Just don't use this low-cal platter as an excuse to order dessert at Chili's; each one of those crazy things has 720 to 1,600 calories and 44 to 78 grams of fat. Eeeks!

Applebee's - Chocolate Raspberry Layer Cake
(entire serving: 230 calories, 3g fat, 3g fiber)

Yay... Right smack in the middle of our list of guilt-free restaurant picks lands a crazy, layered, chocolate dessert! This cream-cheese-frosting-covered slice of chocolate cake, complete with raspberry sauce and a powdered sugar topping, is a steal at just 230 calories and 3g fat. The kicker? 3 whole g's of filling fiber! This low-fat, cake-tastic treat is a rare find. Pair it with their Grilled Shrimp Skewer Salad and you've got yourself a huge, filling meal that has a grand total of just 440 calories and 5g fat!

P.F. Chang's - Cantonese Shrimp

(entire entree: 330 calories, 12g fat, 21g carbs, 33g protein)

P.F. Chang's is another place where high-calorie dishes run rampant (a fairly common trait when it comes to Chinese food). We usually order everything steamed with sauce on the side to avoid a calorie catastrophe. This dish consists of marinated shrimp served in a white sauce with sesame, garlic, and snow peas. If you're looking to lower that fat count, order the dish steamed with the sauce on side. But if you feel like splurging on a decadent dish with a super-low calorie count, enjoy this one exactly as is!

The Cheesecake Factory - Weight Management California Salad

(entire salad w/ dressing: 560 calories, 28g fat, 43g carbs, 25g fiber, 15g sugars, 38g protein)

Okay, despite the fact that this salad has a snoozefest of a name, it's actually pretty exciting. Just like a Cobb salad, it has rows of grilled chicken, bacon, bleu cheese, tomato, beets, asparagus and chopped hard-boiled eggs -- but it has far less fat and calories than the average Cobb contains. Sure it's still a little high in fat, but it's also gigantic (scoop off some of the bleu cheese and bacon if you want to downsize the fat count). The best part may very well be the delicious low-calorie dressing. The Mustard Vinaigrette is sweet and tangy with less than 11 calories per tablespoon and very little fat. There is also a Spicy Vinaigrette (which, oddly, is more sweet than spicy) and a Sesame-Soy Dressing available for the same impressive stats. So feel free to use those with any of the salads at the CF, and just leave off the fatty ingredients.

Wow! I always thought I was safe ordering a salad - but the salad listed above has the highest calorie count of all! Of course, the fiber count is nothing to sneaze at. That's your daily allotment, prectically! Go Fiber! Thanks for the research, Hungry Girl! Definitely opened my eyes to a few things. :)

This food is not healthy, just look at the sodium content totally not for DIABETICS, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE OR KIDNEY DISEASE, BETTER TO COOK AT HOME AND BE SAFE.

something most ppl don't know is that a lot of fast food and restaurant salads have the caloric equivillency of a McDonald's big mac...that's why it's better to brown bag it and just make the salad yourself

people complain about salads loaded with calories..obviously if you slather on ranch and cheese and croutons and bacon etc etc it will be horrible..get a low cal dressing with no cheese and omit the cruotons. Now that is a low cal salad.

ANY fast food or resturant salad is high in everything EVEN IF you omit dressing and the bacon and croutons (which alot of croutons are not bad for you) and other stuff. Its the OTHER stuff they put in it. Iam sick of reading idiots say stuff and try to act like they know alot about this when they dont

the problem with these choices is that they're high in salt content. 99% of fast food and chain restaurants have food that is high in salt and sugars. If your salad is that unhealthy, then just eat one of the regular dishes - at least you'll be enjoying yourself. Food isn't just about calories and fats, its also about ingredients. Unfortunately too many of those foods have artificial ingredients. If you want a real meal, then patronize a smaller, mom and pop place instead of going to these chain restaurants and having to wait 45 minutes for a table.

i don't know about you guys, but its becoming obvious to me that Hungry Girl is being paid by the big food companies. Everything that her articles have put out are items that are from the large food corporations or chain restaurants. I've never seen a truly homemade recipe or item in her articles. Wake up folks.

None of this looks very good to me, but I am picky. I would rather just order whatever I want, eat a third or half of it, then take the rest home for another meal (or two). But I know some people can't do this so these are pretty good tips.

Hungry Girl has alot of low cal and low fat recipie's on her website. I love the recipies, but I also love the tips about what chain restaurants are offering that won't kill my weight loss plan. Another good website to check out for a huge list of restaurants and their nutritional values on a variety of menu items is Dottie's Weight Loss Zone.

Hungrygirl has all kinds of recipes if you look on her site, along with TONS of products that are from smaller, non-chain stores! She's not trying to make stuff from scratch, just trying to help find alternatives to fatty and hi-cal foods most of us enjoy using readily available ingredients. You're comment ballerette2 isn't backed up very well. You should do your research before making ridiculous statements.

Thankj you for all your tips Hungry Girl. I can tell you that I look forward to all of them. As for the Items in recipes that are from the "big food companies", they are mostly things that are readily available and therefore easy to put together.I suggest that the critics "take what they need and leave the rest behind"...

Pgattinoni, the 6" subs at subway barely fill me up anyways, so there is absolutely no point in ordering anything smaller. I mean 4" subs? Come ON.

Hungry Girl is just giving us the facts...she is not saying these foods are good choices for diabetics or renal patients, etc. And Michelle P., what "other stuff" are you referring to...if you take off the dressing, bacon, and croutons, what is left that would be unhealthy? Just curious...

Ok. Here we go again. Yes, she is an employee of a name brand corp. Yes, some of these ideas she posts here do not take into consideration people with diseases, renal, endocrine, cardiovascular, etc. Bacon is so bad, so I personally would not consume more than two pieces a week if any. Dressings: olive oil & vinagrette are less fattening & good for you. Everything in moderation. Beets: excellent. Lots of vegies. Lots of protein. Croutons are a downfall for me; I love bread and cheese. So eat a little of what you love; just don't eat too much. Mom & Pop restaurants (I used to own a small pub) I believe do serve more fresh food, but the reason a lot of places, corps or M&P's, buy bulk and frozen a great deal is cost: to stay in business. Doesn't always mean bad for you. You'd be amazed at what isn't fresh fresh but is still very good tasting and very healthy. We have very strict Calif. State guidelines that we have to follow in the food industry (Thank God). So Hungry Girl is not God, but sometimes then none of us are. Take what you can use and leave the rest of the info you don't need. And listen: Let's all talk nicely to each other in these forums, okay? No need for pissiness. None. I've heard three-year-olds talk more respectfully than some adults on this forum. We're supposed to be helping each other here.
