Cool off this summer with icy treats that aren't packed with calories. Here are three crazy-good concoctions, courtesy of HG.

HG's Tropical Treat Sorbet
(entire recipe: approx. 115 calories, <0.5g fat, 3mg sodium, 28g carbs, 3g fiber, 24g sugars, 0.75g protein)

So simple...so cool...soooo delicious!

Ingredients:
2 servings Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange drink mix (1 On The Go packet or 1/4 of an 8-serving tub)
1 cup mango chunks (fresh or frozen)

Directions:
Dissolve Crystal Light into a just FOUR ounces (a half-cup) of cold water; stir well. If using frozen mango, run under cool water for several minutes to thaw, so it blends more easily. In a blender, puree mango and Crystal Light mixture until just blended. Pour into a dish, cover, and place in freezer until nearly solid (several hours). If freezing overnight, thaw slightly by microwaving for 40 seconds or allowing it to sit out for about 10 minutes before enjoying.

Citrus Berry Super-Slushie
(entire recipe: approx. 60 calories, <0.5g fat, 35mg sodium, 10g carbs, 2g fiber, 12g sugars, 1g protein)

You're just 2 ingredients and a few ice cubes away from enjoying a gigantic low-cal slushie!

Ingredients:
1 serving Crystal Light Lemonade drink mix (either 1/8th of a tub or 1/2 of an On The Go packet)
2/3 cup frozen mixed berries
2/3 cup crushed ice

Directions:
Dissolve Crystal Light into 8 oz. of cold water. Combine with ice and berries in a blender and process until well mixed but still icy. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy! Makes 1 super-sized slushie.

Hungry Girl's 100-Calorie Pina Colada Freeze!
(entire recipe: approx. 100 calories, 2g fat, 25mg sodium, 11g carbs, 2g fiber, 4g sugars, 2g protein)

This frozen cocktail can be enjoyed with or without alcohol as a tasty cool-down treat!

Ingredients:
1.5 oz. Bacardi Island Breeze Coconut rum
1/2 tsp. coconut (or imitation coconut) extract
1/4 cup Breyer's Double Churned No Sugar Added Vanilla Ice Cream
1 tbsp. crushed pineapple in its own juice
3/4 cup crushed ice
1 packet no-calorie sweetener

Directions:
Stir to combine coconut extract and sweetener in 1.5 ounces of water. Put all ingredients in a blender. Blend on high speed for 30 seconds. Pour into a glass and enjoy. Then share this recipe with everyone you know!

Don't drink alcohol? Can't drink alcohol? Try swapping the rum with an ounce of water and adding another 1/2 tsp. of coconut extract, and you'll get a virgin version with only about 50 calories!

I agree 100% with RandiB. I wish people weren't so accustomed to thinking that anything low in calories must be healthy for you and help you lose weight. It's actually quite the contrary: Your body doesn't know what to do with the artificial ingredients and so it stores them as waste. Waste=weight. The book that has enlightened me is called The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose. I swear by this book and you should too.

Now my 2 cents. It always amazes me how upset people get when others have a right to their opinion. Too many take what is being said as a put down, instead of what it is...THEIR OPINION. I agree with many of you on here. I know people that have been using diets products for years to have constant headaches and other health issues. Guess what? Getting rid of all sugar substitutes and getting off diet items has changed their world(s) completely!! They just now watch calories and carbs. Diet sugars are NOT good for you and I am not a health nut. I am a size 3 and do not use any diets sugars or drinks and never will after watching others go through long illnesses to be traced back to diet most anything. Have a great week.

You know... Splenda is actually more healthy because it is made from sugar cane. So, it's technically a natural substance. These recipes are fine to help people gain ideas about certain things that work for them. And they are supliments for those who not only have to exercise, but watch their intake, like at snack time. If you want to eat completely natural, it's fine. But for practical America, it's not enough. Nor is it always enough for people who can not eat natural sugars, or must keep them extremely low. So, I say these ideas are very good suggestions for the public. And if they do not apply to you completely, simply take the idea and change it to suit your needs, but no one else needs to hear you complain about things that aren't geared totally toward your tastes. That's what these are here for. Ideas! Not rules for eating. Food isn't that serious. Food is fun. ^_^ Others who read this, don't be disheartened by the nay-sayers! If you are a nay-sayer, don't say anything at all...

i agree with "randi b"...we've got to get the processed sugars and chemicals out of our diets for optimal health...these things cause and feed inflamations which are the first sign of disease...if you have to sweeten things, use honey, agave nectar, maple sugar, anything but those little packets of chemicals...eeeeeek...and just get a little exercise for goodness sake!!!!!

I personally use artificial sweeteners, on occasion. It depends on opinion. One thing though. The FDA is not always about protecting you. If you go on Wikipedia search aspartame. you see that on his first day, President Regan fired the President of the FDA, and hired someone who would approve aspartame. So...you don't really know.

There are so many things that cause health issues and headaches that it would be almost impossible to narrow it down to a little packet of artificial sweetner, maybe along with cutting out the sweetner those people also changed to a healthier lifestyle, meaning no sodas, or white flour (which also cause huge issues) or more water, or even an air filter can help. And did you know that peanuts are bad too, they have been linked to ADHD....Also low carb diets are bad for your body and brain. The list will never end and different things work for different people but everyone is an expert. I wonder how many people who snub such foods drink alcohol, do drugs, or smoke?

As I read through the many comments on this subject I kept finding that it was one all or nothing comment after another. We all agree that we should all eat better. How we do it is when the arguing begins. Splenda is made from sugar. True, it is processed from sugar but what do you think sugar is? It is hardly a 'natural' food, my friends. It is a processed food from .. you guessed it.. sugar cane or sugar beets. Unless you are going to go out and press your own sugar cane or sugar beet juice, you have very little to replace sugar. What is there out there to look for that is not an 'artificial sweetener'? We have honey... natural and processed. Processed means it has been ..well.. kind of pastuerized. Natural honey? Well, it can contain all kinds of germs, pesticides.. too much to go into. Sorgum mollasses is another idea. Again, you get into the processed and unprocessed issue. That ,and the fact that like honey, it is an acquired taste for many. So.. we are right back where we began. If whatever you try gives you side effects.. headaches.. whatever... common sense says it is not for you. Right? Then go from there. Use common sense. Keep in mind, though, that just because it is not for you does not mean it is bad for everyone. Personally, being diabetic' Splenda has worked fine for me. Try this one on for size.. corn and it's multi-kazillions of varieties. I am allergic to corn and almost every processed food imaginable contails corn starch or corn syrup or a derivitive there of. Yeah! That is where I am. So, I use what I can and avoid things that I know are going to make me sick. No sensible person is going to live on smoothies. Let us face it, friends. These are light treats that we sip hoping they will keep us away from the calorie, fat, sugar, and soometimes sodium laden foods we just seem to crave. I do not care much for any of the many flavors of Crystal Light. That is my personal preference. No insult to Crystal Light fans. I see these recipes and figure out how I can adapt them to what I can tolerate and still actually enjoy the end results. Pick what you like. Adapt what you feel you must. The idea is to blend up a little yummy, sit back, take a deep breath, relax and just enjoy yourself for a few minutes. After all, realistically, you are not going to live 24/7 on any slushy drink or treat, now are you? You all sound way too intelligent for that. Peace be with you, all.

A friend once said to me...everything in moderation. Artificial sweeteners really aren't bad..in moderation. The same goes for sugar. And just about everything else in life. As far as the FDA approvals...they are human too. FDA is not all knowing, and they sometimes have to recall a ruling they have made on food products. However, that is quite seldom they have to do something like that. They are good, very good. Just remember, MODERATION!

And don't forget the parabens found in all beauty shelf lotions and shampoos have also been known to cause cancer, so add that to your list of no-nos as well. . . .

I would rather eat one really good cookie made with butter and sugar, than 10 cookies baked with an artifical sweetner..its all about moderation , balance and eating natural foods that work with our bodies as oposed to eating chemically altered foods that work against our bodies..

Thank you, Randi B. People, read labels. I have worked for hospitals and doctors for over 10 years. do NOT consume anything wtih aspartame in it. VERY VERY DANGEROUS. Don't believe everything you read by these "Heh! try this to have younger brighter tighter fabulous skin/body/whatever!" Use common sense when buying and preparing foods. Use fresh as much as possible. There is a reason our grandparents lived to be in their 90's: because they worked their tails off and ate fresh food and didn't lie around watching TV or sitting at the computer all the time....(I do, at the computer, as my job, but I also run and swim 5 times a week....so compensation.....) cheers!
