Hungry Girl's TOP ATE Guilt-Free Holiday Food Finds!

The holidays are practically here, and supermarket shelves are now flooded with insanely delicious (yet insanely bad-for-you) foods.  But it is possible to indulge in holiday goodies -- guilt-free! Check out Hungry Girl's TOP ATE festive food finds...

1.  Vitasoy Peppermint Chocolate Soy Drink

(8 fl. oz. = 140 calories/ 4g fat/ 24g carbs/ 4g protein)

This stuff is like the love child of a York Peppermint Pattie and a tall glass of rich chocolate milk, and it tastes INSANELY good!  Granted, 140 calories and 4 grams of fat per cup isn't super-low, but splurging every now and then is ok.  And, feel free to use it creatively; mix it into coffee or hot cocoa for a minty choco-rific surprise!  Look for it with the other soymilks in major supermarkets; click here to locate a Vitasoy retailer near you.

2.  Pillsbury Sugar Free Cinnamon Rolls with Icing

(1 roll = 110 calories/ 3.5g fat/ 360mg sodium/ 23g carbs/ 3g fiber/ 0g sugars/ 2g protein)

There are few things quite as satisfying as devouring a warm, gooey cinnamon roll dripping with icing on a winter morning.  And we are LOVING the Pillsbury Doughboy for coming up with a sugar-free version that tastes just as good as the real thing.  And not only are they low in calories, these things even contain 3 whole grams of fiber.  Woohoo!

3.  Silk Soymilk Nog
(1/2 cup = 90 calories/ 2g fat/ 75mg sodium/ 15g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 12g sugars/ 3g protein)

HG SHOCKER!  Ordinary eggnog contains about 230 calories and 10 grams of fat per half-cup serving.  Yikes!  Silk's soy nog tastes great (it's practically as creamy and delicious as the real stuff), and it has just 90 calories and 2 grams of fat per half cup.  This seasonal item is popping up on supermarket shelves everywhere. Weeee!

4.  Torani Sugar Free Peppermint Syrup

(1 oz. = 0 calories/ 0g fat/ 5mg sodium/ 0g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 0g sugars/ 0g protein)

This made-with-Splenda syrup is a must-have for the holidays.  Perfect for coffee, hot cocoa, or in recipes, this minty sweet stuff is not only delicious, it's calorie-free!  Find it at Cost Plus World Market, Smart & Final, or order it online.

5.  Candy Cane Tootsie Pops

(1 pop = 60 calories/ 0g fat/ 0g sodium/ 15g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 10g sugars/ 0g protein)

These red 'n white swirly pops are an old favorite.  They take forever to eat (we always lose count of our licks on the way to the chewy center), and they're low-cal and fat-free!  Pop one of these suckers in your mouth when dessert's being served at holiday dinners, and you won't even miss all those otherwise-tempting options. HG Tip! If you like 'em, stock up on 'em now 'cuz they'll disappear after the holidays.

6.  Stash Tea Bags - Holiday Chai, Christmas Eve, White Christmas, and Christmas Morning

(1 tea bag/ 8 oz. prepared = 2 calories/ 0g fat/ 0mg sodium/ <1g carbs/ 0g sugars/ 0g protein)

These yummy, special edition teas are flavored with all your favorite holiday-time tastes... cinnamon, clove, spearmint, ginger, peppermint, and more.  If you can manage to hold onto ‘em, keep some on hand for springtime when you feel like reminiscing!  Available at most supermarkets and on amazon.com

7.  Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned Light Ice Cream - Egg Nog

(1/2 cup = 110 calories/ 3g fat/ 40mg sodium/ 18g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 13g sugars/ 2g protein)

This limited edition ice cream has us counting the days (and minutes and seconds!) until it arrives in stores. And it's finally here! Even if you're not a huge fan of eggnog, you'll love this super-creamy frozen dessert.  HG Heads Up!  The Dreyer's/Edy's folks offer up two more delicious Slow Churned holiday flavors -- Pumpkin and Peppermint.

8.  Bisquick Heart Smart Baking Mix
(1/3 cup = 140 calories / 2.5g fat/ 430mg sodium/ 27g carbs/ 1g fiber/ 3g sugars/ 3g protein)

Here's another holiday must-have.  Use Bisquick Heart Smart instead of other baking mixes in all your recipes...from cakes to casseroles!  You'll save around 60 calories and 8 grams of fat per cup; and that adds up.  Check out this HG recipe for Snazzy Blueberry Scones made with this stuff.

Any sugar-free goodies that are NOT made with Splenda?

tinglesgirrl : there may be a few brands that are made with Nutrasweet (a.k.a. Equal), like some sugar free varirities of Smucker's Jams that haven;t yet come out in Splenda yet.

Think Walgreen's or WAL*MART might also have the Torani Sugar Free syrup?

Angela R: The only place I've been able to reliably find Torani's is at World Market (www.worldmarket.com) and the Nordstrom Cafe's. Now, I've seen these in Nordstrom cafe's in 3 states, MD, VA and FL, but that's all along the east coast. Wegman's is a little more dispersed and they have their own brand of sugar free syrup that's as good as Torani. Also try a local coffee shop, as both Starbucks and Caribou Coffee carry sugar free syrup varieties. If you talk to a store manager, they may let you buy a big bottle off them. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure you can order them off the internet.

For the first comment, the cinnamon rolls you can buy at Kroger's, but they sell out of them quickly.

Dang Angela, do you know how to use the freakin internet? You go to the marshall's website, and use their store locator. Patricia is exactly right, eat what you like in moderation, and just make sure you get exercise. Splenda is actually very bad for you, it's just sugar that been processed so that your body can't even digest it. I suggest to everyone that you take a nutrition class at your local community college. You'll learn that all these sugar, butter, etc substitutes are worse for you than the real thing. Think about all your ancestors that lived into the 80's, 90's and beyond. They ate what they liked, and through hard work, they unintentionally made sure that all the fat didn't stick around.

If you simply exercise you wont have to go out and buy all of these chemical filled foods and you can enjoy and eat what you like.

Those are all awful. Peppermint is discusting and making tootsie pops and a syrup with it is plain awful sounding. Seriously, I think the only people who read these and take them to heart are the health nuts who are already built like horses so why can't they have a couple cookies or a piece of pie for christs sake? Just excercise and you'll be fine.

xysmurf, splenda is not sugar that has been processed so that your body can't digest it. It's not made from sugar at all! It's completely man made. And sure, it's not good for you, if you eat in large quantities! But then again, neither is natural sugar if eaten in large quantities. As others have said, moderation is key.
