Undo The Holiday Damage...HG Style!

With some simple swaps, you can easily take off those extra pounds you put on over the holidays. No need to give up the foods you love. Just swap 'til you drop with Hungry Girl. Woohoo!

Better Off Bread

Ditch a few sandwiches a week and save yourself endless amounts of calories. Instead, gobble up your lunchmeats on top of a salad of greens and other fresh veggies like cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, red peppers, etc. Just remember to stick to low-cal dressing. When you absolutely need a sandwich fix, go for reduced-calorie, high-fiber bread options (Wonder Light bread is awesome!). Also, try rolling your meal up in a low-fat, low-cal tortilla (like the ones by La Tortilla Factory) or some super-thin lavash bread.

Milk it

One of HG's favorite finds of 2006 is Almond Breeze Unsweetened, a nondairy beverage that is the perfect milk swap! Milk may seem innocent enough...but calories add up, and Almond Breeze'll save you tons of 'em! One cup of whole milk packs in almost 150 calories and 8 fat grams. Yikes! AB Unsweetened, in Original or Vanilla, has only 40 calories a cup and just 3 grams of fat! Use this stuff in your cereal, coffee, and anywhere else you'd normally use milk.

Spread the Word

Did you know a single dollop of mayo adds about 100 calories and more than 10 grams of fat to whatever you plop it on?! A simple switch to the fat-free stuff will save you over 80 calories and all that fat! Cream cheese and soft cheeses may be delicious, but they rack up tons of extra calories and fattiness! Instead, try Laughing Cow Light cheese wedges. These spreadable cheeses have just 35 calories per piece! Need other items you can spread shamelessly? Zesty mustard (HG LOVES creamy Best Foods Dijonnaise!), salsa, and certain fat-free dressings. A serving of regular salad dressing can cost you hundreds of calories and fat grams in the double digits, but there are some really good low-cal options, too. Wish-Bone Salad Spritzers are great portion-controlled sprays packed with tons of flavor.

Stop Drinking Your Calories!

Regular soda, iced teas, and of course, alcohol, add tons of calories to your total tally for the day. By nixing these in favor of low-cal (or no-cal!) beverages, you can save hundreds of calories every day. No need to stick to plain old water, either!  Try low-cal flavored waters, sugar-free teas, and iced coffee.  Crystal Light is another awesome option. Their Sunrise Classic Orange drink is basically the sugar-free love child of Tang and OJ! Also, check out all of the great diet-friendly, on-the-go flavor packets by companies like Lipton, Propel, and Crystal Light. They're perfect for stashing in your car or purse. HG LOVES Lipton's fruity green tea ones. If you're having cocktails, stick with light beer and mixed drinks made with no-cal seltzer. Or try some of HG's other low-cal cocktails.

Meet the New Meats!

Soy has come a long way, baby! Companies like Gardenburger, Boca, and Morningstar Farms are perfecting the art of creating meatless swaps that taste just like the real thing, but with far less calories and fat! Swap regular beef patties for Boca's veggie burgers and you'll save over 150 calories and close to 15 fat grams per burger! Instead of a plate of baby backs, dig into some Riblets courtesy of Gardenburger. And for some guilt-free fun on a stick, take a bite out of Morningstar Farms' Corn Dogs Veggie Dogs...these puppies ROCK.

What about those imitation "spray butters"? Are they a good idea to use on a regular basis and if so, how many Weight Watcher Points would 1 serving be?

Response for lcampagnano@snet.net: The spray butter is "0" points. 0 calories but it has 15mg of sodium, if your watching your sodium count. The best tasting kind is "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" Also try the spray dressing. I forgot the brand but the italian kind is pretty good, "0" points. Good luck to you!!!

A reply to lcampagno@snet.net about the butter spray: While a SERVING is zero points, multiple servings are not. People tend to go crazy with the butter spray and therefore, might as well put a pat of butter on the food by the time your done dousing what your eating in fake butter. I recommend a few spritz of the spray with some additional seasonings that are low in salt (Mrs. Dash for example). Always remember, just because a serving is zero Weight Watchers points, does not mean the entire bottle is :)

From the Hungry Girl Website regarding the butter spray: The "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" spray has ZERO calories if you use just a few spritzes. However, if you do what most of us do and spray to your heart's content, you can rack up calories and fat grams pretty quickly. Here's the scoop: 12.5 sprays is 10 calories and 1 gram of fat, 25 sprays (1 teaspoon) is 20 calories and 2 grams of fat, and 37.5 sprays is 30 calories and 3 grams of fat. In case you're curious, the entire bottle contains 900 calories and 90 grams of fat! Helpful hint: When it comes to this stuff, stick with spraying as opposed to pouring.

Interesting site, interesting info., but somehow I'm not interested. I'm a firm believer in moderation and exercise. I also know that eating fat-free everything leaves out the most vital ingredient that satiates you--fat. 30% if your calories should come from it, and there are plenty of options that don't require you to over indulge, or turn to all these heavily processed and chemical laden foods. Do your own research and learn what's best for your body. Don't follow fads, and most of all, feel good about what you eat and you'll feel good about yourself. Eat crap--feel like crap.

The spray butters are fine, and one serving is zero points. BUT if you're using a lot of it, you do need to start counting it. 35 sprays = 1 point.

On Weight Watchers, one serving of spray butter is zero points. The thing to keep in mind is that the spray butter is actually butter; it is the delivery method that allows it to be zero points. So, if you spray more than once or twice, you may as well count is as the real thing.

I was able to lose weight and feel real good when I stopped eating breads and any sugars. I ate everyting else, of course with moderation. I have used these sprays and I think they are good for portion control. Now, I have to go back to these good eating behaviors to get back to where I was in fall '06!

Hungry Girl is fun to read; however, i do have an issue. You seem to condone Splenda, Splenda, and more Splenda. Have you done your research regarding this product? I don't think so.

How many times does HG have to say it, she is NOT a nutritionist. She just makes suggestions for stuff that she likes. I personally have lost 80lbs. on WW and LOVE some of HG's ideas to help keep it off. Those who love her; she has some great ideas!! Those who don't; get lost!!! Don't ruin a good thing for people who appreciate it. Like Mom always said; if you can't say something nice SHUT UP and let the rest of us enjoy ourselves!!! GO HG!!!!

Have some real butter, you'll feel satisfied, you'll eat less because you need less REAL butter than you need for the spray butters AND IT TASTES GOOD. The Culture of Denial rages on. So sad. Think of all the good that could be done in the world if we were not so culturally obsessed with goes in our mouths. We'd have more time to think of other things, things that really matter than what a number on a scale says.

a lot of these foods are processed and packed with preservatives. preservatives stop your food from being broken down by biological processes, thereby letting them linger and stick to you. eat fresh and organic! you'll notice the boost in energy and weight loss in no time

One trick that worked for me was to get a Big Mac without the sauce, then put a bit of ketchup on it instead. Saved a lot of fat and calories, and it tasted the same. Plus, I can't stand mayo or "secret sauce" anyway. Since I'm diabetic, I don't eat Big Macs anymore; I go for smaller burgers and forgo the fries. You do need some protein in your diet, and the iron in beef is necessary.
