Diet-Friendly Food Finds for Summer

There's a lot of outdoor eating and snacking on the run that happens over the summer, plus the constant need to COOL DOWN. Here are a few items we'll be stocking up on at the Hungry Girl Headquarters this summer...

New Popchips Flavors!

One 0.8-oz. bag = 100 calories, 3.5g fat, 16g carbs, 1g fiber

We're SOOO excited to talk about the brand-new flavors of Popchips. Why? 'Cause they're AWESOME. The two new flavors are Sour Cream & Onion and Cheddar. The SC&O chips taste just like they should (sour cream and oniony!), and the Cheddar ones will make you forget all about fat-packed Cheetos. Snack on!

Musselman's Healthy Picks No Sugar Added Apple Sauce in Key Lime Cupuacu

One 4-oz. container = 70 calories, 0g fat, 17g carbs, 3g fiber

This flavored applesauce also comes in a couple of other flavors, but we like this best. The package indicates it should taste like lime and, um, cupuacu (we ran a Yahoo search; it's a tree), but it sure tastes a lot like pineapple to us. Whatever it is, we like it. It makes a great midday snack and won't give you a sugar-crash OR greasy fingers.

Frank's RedHot Wings Sauce in Sweet Heat BBQ

1 tbsp. = 20 calories, 0g fat, 5g carbs, 0g fiber

Grillers, listen up! This is our new favorite condiment, and it's just screaming to be poured over some nice grilled chicken. If you dream of hot sauce and BBQ sauce getting married, you'll flip over this. BTW, while it's definitely not low in sodium, it does have about half as much sodium as original Frank's.

Del Monte Fruit Chillers Frozen Fruit Sorbet Freeze & Eat Tubes

1 tube = 55 calories, 0g fat, 13g carbs, <1g fiber

We've mentioned these before, but now that it's so hot outside, we figured you might have gotten a little fuzzy-headed and forgotten. Chill out with a tube (or two) of fruity fun in Strawberry Snow Storm and Grape Berry Blizzard varieties. Look for them in the canned fruit aisle. They'll keep you away from those neon-colored freeze pops the kiddies eat.

Today's Farm Freeze-Dried Fruit Snacks

1 package = 45 - 90 calories, 0 - 0.5g fat, 12 - 20g carbs, 0 - 4g fiber

Need an on-the-go fruit fix but sick of toting around bananas? Throw this stuff into your bag. The single-serving packages come in Strawberry, Apple Cinnamon, Pineapple, and Peach. All are great, but the cinnamon-apple flavor is the best and most unique. (They're wedges, not slices or bits!) Find them in select markets or click here to order online.

Glaceau Vitaminwater10

8 oz. = 10 calories, 0g fat, 4g carbs, 0g fiber

We've said it before, but it bears repeating: This stuff is great! There are a bunch of flavors, including some BRAND-NEW ones -- our faves are the Multi-V Lemonade and the all-new Recoup Peach-Mandarin. We love that it's delicious and refreshing -- and it doesn't have ton of sugary calories. EXCELLENT for those hot summer days...

Heading to the beach?  Take these top picks.

Vitamin Water has about 200 calories in a bottle... not diet friendly. Drink regular water...

Very few diet waters are lo-cal. Most are worse than pop, so be careful which one you are picking up. Perhaps that is the strategy: get those that have sworn off soda to drink the lo-cal and get their tastebuds addicted. Then they can continue to sell you all the HFCS you can pack into your waste again!!

Um, exit_thewarrior (Rush Rules, BTW), the article specifically refers to the lower cal version of Vitamin Water. Personally I don't bother with either version - ripoff.

Be careful with Vitamin water, My husband drank them daily and it raised his blood sugar to be too high. Too much sugar in them.

Thats why you switch to the DIET Vitamin10 Water. It has 10 calories per 8oz. And they aren't suggesting that you replace your recommended 8 glasses of water a day with vitamin water 24/7...they are sayin for those people, like me, who diet and eat right and want to treat themselves to somethin to drink other than water and not bust their diet, you can drink one of these to quench your thirst and treat yourself to somethin sweet. Especially in the summer when you are cravin a tall glass of sweet tea or homemade lemonade that is packed with sugar. I worship the new Vitamin10 Water and I've lost 20 lbs this summer cuz of this stuff. Thanks for the tips. =]

"No sugar added" does not mean sugar-free. You should list sugar and sodium, also. I bet the popchips are loaded with sodium! How much sugar is in the "no sugar added" apple sauce? Even with none added, there is usually sugar. That's important for diabetics.

I would like to try those dried fruit snacks. I already know about the vitamin 10 waters though; I always pick those up at the store.
