Guilt-Free Answers to Ice-Cream Cravings

Now that the summer season has arrived, we need a few good guilt-free ways to chill out. Any of these frozen snacks are great picks...

Blue Bunny Birthday Party Ice Cream Sandwiches

160 calories, 3.5g fat, 27g carbs, <1g fiber

These ingenious treats aren't billed as "light" or "low-fat," but they meet our very high standards. White-cake-flavored ice cream is crammed with sprinkles and frosting and sandwiched between two tasty vanilla wafers. It's a spin on not one, but TWO delicious desserts, and it ROCKS!

Nestle Drumsticks Lil' Drums
130 - 140 calories, 6 - 7g fat, 16 - 19g carbs, 0 - <1g fiber

Don't sacrifice quality -- only the quantity has been scaled down here. These fun mini versions of big Drumsticks come in flavors like Cookie Dough and Chocolate Fudge Brownie. (Yup, these have chocolate on the inside of the cones, too!) They're really a PERFECT size. Good work, Nestle!

PhillySwirl Sugar Free Vanilla Cream Stix Swirled with Orange, Cherry & Raspberry

14 calories, 0g fat, 4g carbs, 1g fiber

If you're craving a creamy "dreamsicle" taste, this is where to get your fix. These little popsicles come in several different fruit flavors, all swirled with vanilla goodness for a mere 14 calories. WHAT?! FOURTEEN? We had to come up with a list of reasons at the Hungry Girl HQ not to eat the whole box of 30 at once. ("Brain freeze" and "permanently stained tongue" were the most convincing.)

Nestle Push-Ups, Laffy Taffy and Nesquik

70 - 90 calories, 1 - 4g fat, 13 - 16g carbs, 0g fiber

These frozen goodies are not just a fun throwback snack, they're totally hip and updated, too. The new Laffy Taffy flavors are super-delicious and come in fun swirled colors. The Nesquik kind tastes just like a Wendy's Frosty. 'Nuff said. We're sold.

Baskin Robbins Fruit Blast Bars

50 calories, 0g fat, 13 - 14g carbs, 0g fiber

Don't be fooled by the name... these aren't your average icy fruit pops. These things taste more like creamy sorbet bars, and each box contains Blue Raspberry, Strawberry, and Mango flavors. All three flavors are GREAT! Look for them in the grab-n-go section of your local Baskin Robbins.

Crystal Light Frozen Pops

15 calories, 0g fat, 4g carbs, 0g fiber

On the hot, hot, HOT days of summer, all we want is a simple, refreshing popsicle, but without all the excess sugar. Crystal Light has put out a line that is not only guilt-free, but includes fun grown-up flavors such as Peach Tea, Raspberry Ice, and Cherry Pomegranate. Hey, summer! Bring it on!

Fruit Pearls

50 - 140 calories, 0 - 9g fat, 12 - 17g carbs, 4 - 6g fiber

No offense to Dippin' Dots, but they're a little less appealing since we found these. Fruit Pearls combine that same BB-sized ice-cream-pellet technology with guilt-free sorbets, fresh fruit, and other fun ingredients. Uh, YUM! We love ALL the flavors. Order a case of these little cups to keep in your freezer. Instant cool-down guaranteed.

And if everyone wants to go out to an ice cream shop? Here's your survival guide.

They might be 190 cals, but go for the HaagenDazs mini ice cream bars. You can pronounce all of the ingredients!

Breyers has a new ice cream called Double Churn which is fat free and relatively low cal (110 for 1/2 cup). Superior taste and texture, as good as the best full fat high cal stuff. I like the Chocolate Cookies & Cream.

Dreyers is my favorite. They have non-fat frozen yogurt in delicious flavors anywhere from 100-130 calories for 1/2 cup. They also have Double Churned light ice cream, which is also anywhere from 100-130 calories. Definitely worth trying.

Everyone seems to be obsessed with checking the calorie count. Something can have 150 calories and a ton of sugar. Sugar does not have much calories but it causes the body to store fat. The amount of calories is not the only thing to look at when trying to eat right.

Sometimes people just want a little treat. This is supposed to help those who want a "healthier" alternative. If you are going to eat bad, you might as well make it as low calorie as possible. Don't criticize people for wanting a little break, or a nice snack.

My dh and I are on WW and he is an ice cream junky. He has lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks and has an ice cream every night for dessert. I am down 26 lbs in the same amount of time and have an occasional ice cream treat. Our favorites are Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwiches, 2 ww pts in mint, chocolate, vanilla, cookies and cream, chocolate peanut butter and strawberry shortcake...WW fudgsicles are huge and 2 pts and pretty good as are their other ice cream treats. You can still have ice cream and not kill your diet. For those of you purists or criticizers, get a life for heaven's sake and let people eat what they want! It is better to have a lowfat treat once in awhile and stick to your program then either binge or bounce back and forth because you can't stick with it.

i think anything sugar-free eaten in excess causes cramping/diarrhea... it's the laxative effects of the sugar substitutes. sugar-free candies have a warning on the back of the packaging that i think is generally applied to other sugar-free foods as well.
