Gluten-Free Food Finds Everyone Should Try

Can't eat wheat gluten? Just don't want to? That doesn't mean you can't enjoy delicious guilt-free foods. Here's a list of Hungry Girl's gluten-free favorites. P.S. They're all totally great-tasting, so gluten-eaters should take notes, too!

Organic Bistro Whole Life Meals

1 meal, excluding salmon entrees = 330 - 490 calories, 6 - 17g fat, 43 - 57g carbs, 6 - 9g fiber

These frozen dinners ROCK. Besides being gluten-free, they're also crazy-low in sodium (as little as 80mg and no more than 400mg). The line includes fun varieties like Spiced Chicken Morocco, Jamaican Shrimp Cake, and Pasta Puttanesca. They can be found at select supermarkets, like many Whole Foods locations (click to find one!).

LesserEvil Krinkle Sticks

1 oz., about 1 cup = 110 calories, 19 - 20g carbs, 2.5g fat, 2g fiber

You can't go wrong with a snack that tastes like the love child of French fries and potato chips. The gluten-free thing is just an added bonus. Plus, they're low in fat, which you know we adore. Try the Classic SeaSalt flavor or go for the fun flavors, like SourCream & Onion and Old School Bar-B-Que. Look for them at select markets (click here to find a store near you!).

Kettle Cuisine Gluten-Free Soups

One 10-oz. bowl = 100 - 140 calories, 3 - 8g fat, 12 - 19g carbs, 1 - 5g fiber

Look for these fancy, all-natural soups in the freezer aisle. We've tried (and loved) the Organic Carrot & Coriander and Tomato Soup with Garden Vegetables, and we can't wait to sample the rest. They come in a bunch of other varieties as well, and in microwaveable bowls, too! (Read labels carefully -- our stats don't include the chilis or chowders.) Click here to see where to find 'em.

Larabars, Apple Pie and Cherry Pie

1 bar = 180 - 190 calories, 8 - 10g fat, 23 - 28g carbs, 4g fiber

What's better than an all-natural snack bar that tastes like dessert? Not much. (It would have to be something amazing, like kittens playing badminton.) These yummy bars are ideal to stash in your bag or glove compartment for those times when you need food PRONTO. And since they're made of fruit and nuts, they're naturally gluten-free! Try any flavor you like, but these two pie-inspired treats are at the top of our list!

Amy's Mexican Tamale Pie and Amy's Bistro Burger

1 pie = 150 calories, 3g fat, 27g carbs, 4g fiber
1 burger = 90 calories, 2.5g fat, 13g carbs, 2g fiber

Our undying affection for Amy's products is no secret. She's got a ton of delicious gluten-free foods, but these two are our favorites. No, we could not pick just one. The tamale pie is terrific quickie comfort food, and the burgers are the kind of things you'll want to keep on hand at all times. Want a little something extra? Click here for the full Amy's gluten-free meal plan!

Van's Wheat Free Waffles, Homestyle and Apple Cinnamon

2 waffles = 210 calories, 7g fat, 36g carbs, 1g fiber

Everyone likes a good waffle now and then, which is why it's SO great that Van's has a line of waffles without gluten. The classic Homestyle and Apple Cinnamon waffles are our favorites, but they've got a handful more to choose from (even mini waffles!). These babies can be found at select grocery stores, so click here to find the one closest to you.

And, Of Course...
House Foods Tofu Shirataki Noodle Substitute!
4 oz. = 20 calories, 0.5g fat, 3g carbs, 2g fiber

What can be said about these things that we haven't said already? For any newbies out there, these noodles ROCK. The most important thing is to RINSE AND SQUEEZE THEM DRY as well as you possibly can before you cook with them. For more on shirataki, click here...

Everyone I know who's tried Shirataki noodles has gotten very sick off them. Everything else? Awesome! Great list of finds! Everything that you listed is VEGAN too. So it's very good to the little cows and chickens and Mother Earth.

I have found that anything that is Pamela's brand is delicious with the exception of the chocolate chunk cookies, and Tinkyada rice pasta is a must-have for those who need gluten-free pasta!

I LOVE the tofu noodles. The first time I tried them though, I took some advise and rinsed them very well and boiled them for 6 minutes (spagetti) and 11 for the fett. And...if you eat the whole bag which is 2 servings, depending on the sauce you use, won't feel guilty. The calorie count for the bag is under 100 calories 4 grams of fat and like 3 grams of carbs or less.

Trader Joes makes a great gluten free pancake mix and cookie mix now. They are also free of casein (dairy).

I haven't been diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity, but since losing my hair to an autoimmune condition called alopecia, I'm a lot more health conscious. Trader Joe's is so far away from my home. Is there a site that gives a comprehensive list of common grocery store gluten free items?

I will say I gave up trying to find any packaged food without gluten in it that tasted any good or was worth the price. Just stick with real food - fresh fruit and veggies, fish, meat and yogurt. Homemade polenta - NOT the crap from a box that doesn't save you any time anyway. Just buy some cornmeal and find a recipe online...yum! Your body and bank account will thank you!

I don't have celiac disease, but I am gluten intolerant, so I've been eating gluten free for some time. lena b, Amazon carries groceries and has a wide variety of gluten free foods. You have to buy a case, usually 6 to 12 of an item, but if you cook a lot or can freeze the item, it's a great deal, as not only do you get a reduced price, you can get the free super saver shipping. I love Lara Bars, but I prefer the cashew cookie and peanut butter cookie flavors. They really do taste like cookies, and help cut the craving for baked goods. I've tried the Organic Bistro meals. The main dish or meat was usually good, and the organic vegetables were excellent, but the starchy side dish was uniformly bad. Nature's Path makes MUCH better frozen waffles than Van's, which tend to be hard and dry. Nature's Path Mesa Sunrise waffles are much better.
