Diet-Friendly Easter Candy Finds

Here comes Peter Cottontail... OK, maybe it's just Hungry Girl in a bunny suit. But she's got candy you can eat without guilt, so who cares?!

EASTER... SANS SUGAR!

Sugar-Free Jelly Bellys

35 beans = 80 calories, 0g fat, 37g carbs, 8g fiber

There are pretty much two kinds of jelly beans in the world -- Jelly Bellys and everything else (oh, and the ones we mention below--so, three!). That's why we're so thrilled Jelly Belly makes a line of sugar-free jelly beans, in Assorted Flavors or Sours. (Pssst! They also make sugar-free gummi bears.) FYI, these candies are sweetened with Splenda.

Sugar-Free Peeps
3 chicks = 60 calories, 0g fat, 23g carbs, 0g fiber

Three little Splenda-sweetened marshmallow chicks add up to a mere 60 calories, which is pretty sweet. However, if you wanna snack on regular Peeps (it IS a special occasion!), a serving of them will only run you between 130 and 160 calories (depending on which shape you get).

PARTY WITH CAUTION...

100 Calorie Packs Oreo Candy Bites

1 pack = 100 calories, 3.5g fat, 17g carbs, 0g fiber

Yeah, yeah, these things are available year-round... but they're round and almost candy-egg-like! If you're filling up an Easter basket for someone watching their calorie intake, these packets are great.

Starburst Original Jelly Beans
about 1/4 cup = 150 calories, 0g fat, 37g carbs, 0g fiber

Some of the best non-Jelly-Belly jelly beans. If you NEED sugary candy and can keep yourself from overdoing it, go for it! Just be warned that while 1/4 cup of jelly beans sounds like a lot, you could get in trouble if you start mindlessly chewing. Our advice? Measure out a scoop FIRST, and then put away the bag.

YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T EAT...

Cadbury Creme Eggs

1 egg = 150 calories, 5g fat, 25g carbs, 0g fiber

Thinking about Cadbury Eggs makes us want to throw a full-on "But I WANT them!"-style tantrum. But just like we didn't need a new hot-pink dress for our Barbie (Mom was right), we really don't need these, either. However, for those of us who absolutely need to have one (JUST ONE!) per year, go for it. But stick with one.

Big solid chocolate bunnies
1.5 oz. = about 220 calories, 12g fat, 25g carbs, 0.5g fiber

These sweet things are the opposite of portion control. Sure, you can say, "I'm only going to eat the ears," but then before you know it, you're gnawing at its little tail. Your average 6-oz. chocolate bunny has around 880 calories and almost 50g fat. ACK! Don't even bother. Buy these other sweets.

Not sure I agree with not eating the Cadbury egg when a bag of the sugar-free jellybeans has 37 grams of carb. Yes, there is some fiber in the beans, but carbs are carbs in the meantime - they burn the same, whether or not they are sugar. It's misleading to suggest a difference.

Be careful with the sugar free jelly beans. I had a serving of sugar free Jelly Belly beans, and had an awful case of diarrhea shortly after eating them. Fortunately, I was at home at the time ; )

My healthier lifestyle also includes a promise to myself, to not restrict myself completely from the things I love....so sorry Cadbury Creme Eggs are not a NO NO, just don't over indulge and keep track of everything else you're eating.

Watch it with sugar-free candy. As the first poster mentioned, eating excessive amounts can cause MISERABLE gas pain and diarrhea. You will truly think you have eaten your final meal and that you're going to die in agony. Not to mention the excruciating embarrassment factor. I learned the hard way here. One overindulgence was all it took to drive the lesson home.

Have to agree about the carbs are carbs, and the overindulgence in the sugar free candy. Had Gastric bipass and cant have sugar. ate the SF candy and it still caused "dumping syndrom" and double you over gass...

While I have not tried the sugar free jelly bellys, I do know this about sugar free products for those of you who have experienced the gas or other effects of it. It is the malitol (Not sure if I spelled it correctly) in the product that causes this. I used to eat the Russell Stovers sugar free caramel rabbit that contained it & within 1 hr I was running for the bathroom. Haven't been able to find them again in years, loved eating them, but not the after effects.
