9 Foods With Good Fats That Make You Thin

Fat has become the bad guy. Probably because most of the time, we eat too much of it -- and generally the wrong kind. But studies show that including good fats in your diet (in moderation, of course!) can actually help you lose weight. Hungry Girl's here with the 411...

FIT FATS!

Monounsaturated Fats
Found In: vegetable oils, nuts, avocados

Polyunsaturated Fats, including Omega-3 and Omega-6
Found In: fish, seeds, grains, mayonnaise

Why They're Diet Essentials

It all comes down to properly fueling the body. If it's got everything it needs (and it NEEDS healthy fats!), it will burn off calories more effectively. Fats are also filling, so you're less likely to overeat if you have good fats in your system. Experts say a lack of them in your diet can also trigger depression, which we all know can lead to a pity party with a pizza. So get these good guys into your diet, STAT!

FOOD FINDS WITH JUST ENOUGH FAT!

1. Sunkist Almond Accents, Various Flavors

PER SERVING (1 tbsp.): 40 calories, 3 - 3.5g fat, 1 - 2g carbs, 0 - 1g fiber, 1g protein

Give your salad a boost... add crunch to your yogurt... make snack mixes with 'em! Unlike grabbing whole almonds by the handful, snacking on these thinly slivered, flavored treats makes it easy not to overdo it. They're also GREAT for recipes, because a little goes a long way.

2. Justin's Nut Butters in 100-Calorie Squeeze Packs

PER SERVING (One 0.6-oz. packet): 100 calories, 8g fat, 3 - 4g carbs, 1 - 2g fiber, 3 - 4g protein

Most everyone loves peanut butter. The problem is that a giant jar of the stuff makes portion-control nearly impossible. Keep these single-serving packets on hand, and you're guaranteed to keep your fat ration in check. And good news... packets of Justin's delicious Maple Almond Butter are now sold at Starbucks. Woohoo!

3. Starkist Mango Chipotle Salmon Creations
PER SERVING (2 oz., half a pouch): 60 calories, 1g fat, 2g carbs, 0g fiber, 10g protein

Salmon is a great source of Omega-3s. And Starkist's new creation is a double whammy -- it's convenient and portion-controlled! We recommend eating the whole pouch for a small dose of healthy fats and tons of filling protein. Toss it in a salad or wrap it up in a high-fiber tortilla. Lunchtime!

4. Kraft Reduced Fat Mayonnaise with Olive Oil

PER SERVING (1 tbsp.): 45 calories, 4g fat, 2g carbs, 0g fiber, 0g protein

For those of you who NEED mayo, Kraft has just the thing for you. This stuff delivers creamy taste with the health benefits of olive oil. And it has HALF the fat of regular mayo, so it won't weigh you down.

5. Berry Almond Luna Bars
PER SERVING (1 bar): 180 calories, 4g fat, 27g carbs, 3g fiber, 9g protein

Heads up, Luna fans (and fans of things that taste good in general)! The latest Luna flavor is packed with just the right amount of good-for-you fats. In this case, they come from almonds and sunflower seed oil. An added bonus? Lots of antioxidants!

GOOD FATS, GOOD RECIPES!

6. Holy Moly Guacamole - Avocados are chock-FULL of the good fats, but too much of a good thing can become, well, a bad thing. So...EAT THIS!

7. Slammin Smoked Salmon 'n' Bacon B-Fast Sandwich - Not only does this get you the Omegas you need, it's also REALLY delicious.

8. Snack-tastic Holiday Mix - Give the gift of good fats by setting this mix out at your next shindig. What a hostess!

9. Crazy-Good Cold Sesame Noodles - Peanut buttery cold pasta rocks. But the average order has too, TOO much fat. Ours has just enough!

Hi Hungry Girl! I love fat! I include fat with every meal and snack and I totally agree with the health study on healthy fats and weight loss. For breakfast, I love a tbsp of coconut oil in my chocolate, berry protein shake. My lunch consists of steamed brocolli, brown rice and a lean protein. 1 tbsp of olive oil drizzled on top of my veggies. Oil helps your body absorb more nutrients from your veggies! My dinner: lean protein, veggies and a few avocado slices. Did I mention that I love fat? Yummy! Love, Ghada

Unfortunately, your suggestions don't take into account for diabetics whose daily intake total is 10 mg saturated fat. you don't even give the figures of saturated fats. Please try to be more accurate for the benefit of everyone.

I think the comment that JR left is inappropriate, although sex can make you lose weight. Eating Healthy and Exercise is the best way to lose weight in my opinion.

All those will make me lose weight. Except for the party mix I do not like those foods. My blood sugar is excellent as is my blood pressure. My cholesterol is low, unfortunately even the good kind. I'm healthy and fit, but according to the BMI at my height I should lose over 50 pounds.

Will you post the cholesterol counts for the different foods? I've been able to bring down my cholesterol from 260 to 180 through diet and exercise and I'd love to try the tuna fish and the mayo but not if there's cholesterol in them.

losing weight all comes down to eating smart and exercising. I don't say dieting, that sounds like you are depriving yourself. Think of your body as an engine. You wouldn't put junk in your car engine, why put junk in your body?

    • 15. Posted by Eric F on Thu, Oct 02, 2008, 1:36 pm PDT Will you post the cholesterol counts for the different foods? I've been able to bring down my cholesterol from 260 to 180 through diet and exercise and I'd love to try the tuna fish and the mayo but not if there's cholesterol in them. If you don’t read this post, which is long, just go to these websites: www.sunfood.com www.herbdoc.com http://www.beinghealthynaturally.com/heartdiseasecholesterol/cholesterol.htm www.coconut-info.com To Eric F, Schlita H, Helen Lea, and everyone: Eric F – just avoid tuna and traditional mayo. Unless it’s Grapeseed Oil Vegenaise – this can be found at Whole Foods or online at: http://www.followyourheart.com/vegenaise.html Tuna is better avoided because of high mercury levels, however, tuna does contain some omega 3 fatty acids. The colder the water, the more nutritious and safer the fish. Coldwater fish, such as salmon and tuna, contain more of the omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA than do fish from warmer waters, such as catfish, red snapper, trout, and pike. As a general guide, the warmer the water, the lower the oil content of the fish. Ocean fish tend to be safer than lake fish, which are more likely to contain traces of environmental pollutants. Also, try to avoid the canned tuna, and opt for the tuna packed in other methods. Aluminum causes Alzheimer's Disease. As an alternative to tuna, try egg whites or lean boneless skinless chicken with vegenaise and chopped veggies like celery, and green onion. To get the flavor of the sea, you could add nori or dulse flakes. Nori and dulse are kinds of seaweed. They are extremely nutritious, touting many health benefits such as: increasing thyroid function (raising metabolism), chelating harmful and toxic heavy metals from your system (chelating means binding to them and carrying them out of the body to be eliminated), seaweeds contain a huge array of minerals and trace minerals, and are very high in calcium - they contain between 7 and 14 times as much calcium as milk, depending on the type of seaweed. Arame and hiziki have the highest amount of calcium. Everyone else - Don’t believe this article: almost every food suggestion in this article is horribly unhealthy, except for the almond butter and guacamole. The noodles and luna bar, and all else actually can raise cholesterol levels and cause weight gain due to the refined carbohydrates and starches, which I explain later. It is nothing more than a shameless advertisement for Sunkist, Starkist, and Kraft, etc. It is true, however, that certain foods used in these products and recipes DO help with weight loss, general health, AND mood balancing (brain balancing). These certain foods are almonds, salmon, olive oil, avocados, walnuts, and sesame seeds. The foods high in Omega 3’s that they don’t mention are: hemp seeds and hemp oil (the best balance of Omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids), flax seeds and flaxseed oil, anchovies, black cod, halibut, herring, mackerel, mustard seeds, oregano, oysters, pumpkin seeds (also very high in zinc, very good for men)(you can find delicious pumpkin seed butter in most health food stores), sardines, scallops, and tofu. Some other extremely healthy fats not as high in Omega 3s, but possessing other health benefits are: Raw unprocessed coconut and virgin coconut oil (more on this later), and brazilnuts (Best source of selenium out of any other food. Selenium fights cancer, supports the immune system, and activates thyroid hormones, raising metabolism). For
