Don't Be Fooled By These Supermarket Lies

Sometimes things aren't what they seem. Check out the slightly shocking stats Hungry Girl found on some of the healthy-sounding items you find in the aisles of your local market...

Wheat Thins Baked Snack Crackers, Original

(1 serving = 140 calories, 6g fat, 21g carbs, 1g fiber)

Why does something that has the words "wheat" and "thin" in its title have 6g fat per serving? And those 6 grams quickly double or triple when you shovel too many of these addictive things down your throat. If you really want Wheat Thins, go for the Reduced Fat kind, which have 3.5-4g fat and come in fun flavors. And if you want to trade up, try Kashi's TLC Crackers in Original 7 Grain. A serving of those has 130 calories, 3g fat, 22g carbs, and 2g fiber, and they're PACKED with things like barley, buckwheat, and brown rice. Kashi's got grains -- and knows how to use them!

Clif Mojo Dipped Bar, Peanut Butter and Jelly
(220 calories, 11g fat, 21g carbs, 2g fiber)

If you're like us, you saw this "sweet and salty trail mix bar" and started doing a little peanut-butter-jelly-time dance. Sadly, that dancing would have had to go on for a long while to burn off the calories in this mighty thin bar. If you're looking for a satisfying, sweet, and nutty bar with better stats, grab a Luna Bar. The Toasted Nuts 'n Cranberry has only 180 calories and 4g fat, plus 3g fiber. Mmmmm!

Tofutti Premium Frozen Dessert, Vanilla
(1/2 cup = 210 calories, 13g fat, 21g carbs, 0g fiber)

For those of you who are lactose intolerant or vegan, Tofutti is an excellent substitution for ice cream. However, don't look at it as a light alternative. In fact, it has almost as much fat as Ben & Jerry's Vanilla Caramel Fudge Ice Cream! If all you're looking for is a light ice cream alternative, go for Edy's/Dreyer's Slow Churned Light Ice Creams. A half-cup of their Vanilla, Vanilla Bean, or French Vanilla has only 100 calories and 3.5g fat! Those opposed to dairy may want to check out Purely Decadent's line of soy-based frozen desserts. You can indulge in the company's new Snicker Doodle flavor for only 190 calories and 6g fat per half-cup. Not too bad for a decadent dessert!

Glaceau VitaminWater
(8 oz. = 50 calories, 0g fat, 13g carbs, 0g fiber)

Hi, VitaminWater? Yeah, um, you're Kool-Aid. Maybe with a Flintstones chewable dropped in, but still -- this is water with a lot of calories. And this is another one of those products that assumes you'll guzzle the entire bottle without realizing that each one contains two and half servings. We suggest you either A) try FruitWater, one of Glaceau's other products, which has less than half the calories and sugar OR B) pop a multivitamin with a Crystal Light chaser! No sugar, no nothin'. If you really need to zazzle up your water, don't do it with calories!

If you're looking for flavored water with no sweeteners and no carbonation, try Target's brand, Archer Farms flavored waters. Lots of yummy flavors with no calories and no nasty sucrulose or other artificial sweeteners.

Yes, I'm very careful and read the labels. They give you mixed messages. They tell you it's low in fat, but it's still high in calories. Or, it's sugar free, but it's full of calories and fat. You can't win!!! But if you read carefully you'll know the right stuff to get.

I am a crazy label-reader and I have had to pass up on some snacks I always thought were good enough for me on WW. Good tips here. But, one thing I will add is that it is so frustrating that eating better costs so much more!!! No wonder this country is fat - Pop Tarts are $1 a box, but the organic, lower sugar version is $4!!

meh. I'm usually a fan of HG posts but these aren't THAT bad as long as you can keep your hand out of the box. There are always better alternatives. :) Keep em coming HG!

I tried the butternut squash "fries" and they are spectacular...I'm hooked! My husband really liked them too and we will be enjoying these regularly. I also tried the onion rings dipped in egg white and Fiber One cereal...these are fabulous too! Thanks for the new twist on some old faves. :) I have already recommended these newfound recipes to friends and family.

For even better water with ZERO calories, ZERO carbs, and ZERO sodium, go to your local Vons/Pavilions/Safeway store and check out "O Water". It comes in three flavours that I can find, and is so yummy without being sickeningly sweet or having all those creepy chemicals like Nutrasweet or Splenda.

check out schopra.qhealthzone.com and search fro twist tubes...from 0 to 10 cal per serving and easy to carry. I always have a box sitting in my cube ..just mix it in water and gulp it down and cost of less than a dollar per serving......much better than having a coke..........

Why does Hungry Girl always refer to herself in the first-person plural? The tips are great, but Jah, it's cutesy and annoying, as if she's writing for a bunch of 5-year-olds. If there are other folks on the HG staff, as I suspect, shouldn't it be Hungry Girls? Or Hungry People?

Just a hint, read the ingredients as well as the nutrition label, if it says that it's "sugar free" check for the "hidden sugars" such as fructose, dextrose and so on. Just because it says that it's sugar free doesn't always mean that it is.

You are just reading labels. Why can't people read labels on their own? Why do we need someone tell us what has a lot of calories when it says it on the box?
