HG's Test-Your-Diet-Smarts Quiz!

Consider yourself a calorie-counting queen (or king!)? Test your knowledge with this quickie quiz. Warning...there's some SHOCKING stuff here....

Question 1: Which has fewer calories at Dunkin' Donuts?

a) Reduced Fat Blueberry Muffin
b) Chocolate Kreme Filled Donut

Answer: b - the donut. Believe it or not, the muffin has 400 calories while the cream-stuffed donut has only 270. The donut IS higher in fat, with 13 grams, than the muffin, which has 5. But the regular full-fat muffins (which make up most of your muffin selection) have 15 - 25 grams of fat and 400 - 600+ calories! For a low-cal pastry fix, check out some of Entenmann's new Little Bites 100 Calorie Packs in Blueberry Muffins or Brownie Squares.

Question 2: Which of these movie treats has the most fat and calories?

a) A small popcorn with butter
b) A small order of nachos with cheese dip
c) A 3.3-oz. bag of Peanut M&Ms

Answer: a - the popcorn. While all three of these scary selections have 450 - 600 calories and 20 - 50 fat grams each, the small buttered popcorn is the worst with around 600 calories and 50 grams of fat! Even without the added butter it'll cost you 400 calories and 25 grams of fat. Instead, go for a soft pretzel (400 calories, 4g fat) and split it with a pal. And for at-home movie nights, pop up some 94% fat-free popcorn.

Question 3: At Burger King, which of these breakfast menu items has the most calories?

a) DOUBLE CROISSAN'WICH w/ Sausage, Bacon, Egg, & Cheese
b) French Toast Kid's Meal (with syrup)
c) An order of Cini Minis with Icing (4 rolls)

Answer: b - the french toast. Even we were shocked to uncover that the kiddie meal has the most calories of the three! 670 of 'em and 22 fat grams to be exact. Not surprisingly, the massive loaded CROISSAN'WICH has the most fat -- 39 grams. Yuck. As far as better breakfast choices at BK? Um, we hear the coffee's not bad. If you leave the house in a rush, you're far better off hitting a convenience store for a piece of fruit and an on-the-go breakfast bar.

Question 4: A quick trip to the mall has turned into a four-hour shopping extravaganza and your stomach's growling. What's your best bet in the food court?

a) A slice of plain pizza
b) A tuna salad sandwich at the deli
c) A chicken caesar salad

Answer: a - the pizza. While deli sandwiches and salads may seem like healthy options, the mayo in that tuna and the gobs of fatty dressing on the salad make the plain pizza your safest option when eaten as served. Each of those others can contain 700 - 1,000 calories and 50 fat grams or more! Still, 500 - 600 calories and 20 grams of fat for that oversized pizza slice is no bargain. Instead, go for salads with grilled chicken or eat your chicken caesar with a different light dressing on the side. Open-faced sandwiches with deli meats and cheese-less veggie-topped pizza are also good options.

Question 5: It's 4 PM at the office. Lunch is a distant memory, and you have hours 'til dinner. The vending machine is screaming your name. Which will best keep your calorie and fat counts down?

a) Trail mix
b) Beef jerky
c) Baked chips

Answer: b - the jerky. Nope, it's not the baked item or bag of dried fruit and nuts. That shriveled meat snack has the fewest calories and fat and it's packed with protein, too! For an ounce of each (check the bag to see how many servings they cram in!), jerky has only about 70 calories and a gram of fat, the chips have around 120 calories and 3 fat grams, and trail mix tips the scales with about 150 calories and 10 grams of fat. Expand your options by packing your desk drawer with fresh fruit and 100-calorie snack packs and stocking the fridge with nonfat yogurt and light string cheese.

The beef jerky may have the fewest calories but it's certainly not the best option. The trail mix has good fats from the nuts, and any dried fruit it contains isn't bad for you either. As long as you avoid one that contains candy I would say trail mix is your best bet.

Mmmmm....donuts! Who knew? Hey wouldn't the Burger King breakfast sandwich be okay without the greasy meat? If I get a breakfast sandwich I never get mine with meat (post-op G-bladder removal). Hurts my tummy.

There's more to healthy eating than calories and fat. Jerky is certainly high in protein and, if you buy the right one, low in fat (some jerky has much more fat than others - read the label). Unfortunately, it's also loaded with nitrites, which are probably the most unhealthy preservatives allowed on the market (they are strongly linked to colon cancer). Jerky's fine once in a while, but you certainly don't want to make it your routine snack of choice.

I could not agree more with post 6. People who are choosing between this garbage and eating out all the time will remain unhealthy and overweight forever. America is fat now and will be until people stop living to eat and start eating to live. If you were conscious of your diet and calorie intake why would you even be in a Dunkin' Donuts or Burger King in the first place? Breakfast Bars? Come on, just eat some cereal!! Watching your diet and choosing between a donut and muffin... give me a break. Go to the grocery store.

I disagree in every way with the muffin and donut question. The only reason the muffin is higher in calories and fat is because America has uped our portion size. For example if you notice, in the bigger stores with more variety, they have two different sizes of Otis Spunkmeyer muffins. The larger is of course going to have more. So if you get the muffin...cut it in half...you don't NEED that whole thing any how. In doing this you cut calories and lower it to below that horrible donut.

And don't ever forget that a plain bagel---that's without any cream cheese, butter, jelly, or any other topping, has about TWICE the calories of a 12 oz. bottle of beer, which has no more calories and no more fat than a large apple. Remembe the first rule of nutrition---there is no such thing as junk food, only junk lifestyles. Elite athletes like Tour de France cyclists eat about 6000 calories PER DAY (normal active adult requirement is about 2500)---yet they don't get fat, because they burn it off. It's more about what you do with what you put in, not so much about what or how much you put in.

I just took another diet quiz and they said that a handful of nuts (ie. trail mix) is good for losing weight because it makes you feel full. So I am with the people who think that the trail mix was the best option on that one. Jerky - forget about it, unless you make it yourself. WAY too many additives in the store bought stuff.

I eat anything I want. The key is portion size. I'm sick and tired of people complaining about not being able to lose weight on there diet while they pile topping and dressing on there 2000 calorie salad.

Its true, while its exciting to hear that doughnuts are okay, if I began to choose between junk food and junk food, where would I be. Certainly not in a bikini by summer time. So much for that, can you say "misleading?"

Well, this is a silly thing. The key is the SIZE of the portion. Also, she doesn't talk about anything like the insulin spike you would get from a Donut. Sara is right. The trail mix has good fats. And again, how big is the portion???? Do I by a tiny muffin or a huge one?? Get real HG.

I disagree with 10. I work in the industry and we keep offering healthy options: turkey sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, etc. The issue is that the consumers demand cheap hot dogs... We are trying to be profitable, employee people, and to do so we have to offer what the consumers want - and that's a chili-cheese dog with extra grilled onions...

Is it too hard to go to the store for an apple if you are rushed for time??? And If I am at the mall and want a salad, I tell them to not put the dressing on it, Or if they must put it on the side. IF I am forced to eat fast food... I tell BK and Mc Ds people that I DO NOT WANT MAYO on my sandwich when I am there. Grilled Chicken with no mayo is not a bad option. I agree with the person who said take the meat out of the Breakfast sandwich. AND WHAT ABOUT THE HAM? It is very low in fat! Hey it is BK you are supposed to be able to have it you way. That is their motto after all.

This quiz is misleading. A lot of the items with more calories are much healthier choices than the item with less calories. Now people who have tried dieting and failed are going to think it's because they picked the tuna sandwich over the pizza. Fat kills!

Pretty good stuff there, but the last suggestion of nonfat yogurt made me wonder. Our doc said nonfat is extra high in carbs which can make your blood sugar spike, so low fat is better. She also said we should eat all three groups: fat, protein, and carbs together to keep us fuller longer. Makes sense having had sald with nonfat dressing and been starved in an hour.
