i did that the other day with the popcorn and the candy. i used a 100 cal popcorn bag and about a teaspoon or two of mini chocolate chips. (so it was around 130 cals). You put the chocolate in right away and it melts all over the popcorn. it is so good and you feel like you should feel guilty, but at 130 calories, anyone can afford it!

I tried the rice cake/cool-whip free sandwich...It was delicious! I did switch it up a bit; I made my "cool whip free sandwich" with one chocolate rice cake & one caramel corn rice cake. I also used the small rice cakes for a bite-sized treat instead of the larger ones.

These ideas really disturb me. This Hungry Girl person doesn't understand the basic tenets of nutrition or health. This food is all fake food. All she worries about is calories and fat grams, not whether things are good for you. All this processed food is crap and encouraging people to eat fat-free processed food is dangerous. These are the ingredients in fat-free Cool Whip: water, corn syrup, hydrogented vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup, natural and artificial flavor, modified food starch, sodium caseinate ( a milk derivative), xanthan and guar gums, polysorbate 60, polysorbate 65, sorbitan monostearate, sodium hydroxide and beta carotene for color. Sheesh! Corn syrup and hydrogented vegetable oil are the most unhealthy things you can eat!

Hungry Girl, you rock! I LOOOOOOOVE your cookbook and use it every single day! Even when I'm not in the kitchen, all the fun stuff in the book keeps me entertained (and away from shockingly bad foods!). ANd of course I love the daily emails -- 1st thing I read in the morning! Thanks HG! Keep it up...

Oooh, the popcorn/snackster combo reminds me of my new favorite snack...Select Chex Mix Chocolate Peanutbutter and Select Chex Mix Dark Chocolate. You get 2/3 a cup (which is a decent amount) and it's 5 grams of fat (or less, in the case of the dark chocolate). I put 2/3 a cup in a baggie and take it to the movies. It tastes FABULOUS. Really good hormone food. :-)

I agree with Lillit. Most of the foods that Hungry Girl encourages people to eat are empty calories that will not help one to feel satisfied. Stop encouraging people to "snack" on processed foods. In order to to eat healthy one needs to choose foods that will help them stay FULL. Better choices may be foods like oatmeal, lean chicken, broiled fish, ALL vegtables, fruits, e.t.c.
What do you think?

I disagree with Jana... and Lilli...
Popcorn=whole grain
Turkey bacon and egg beaters (egg whites)=lean protein
Rice cakes=low fat and probably some whole grains too
multigrain cereal in the snacksters pack=whole grains
Meatless crumbles=soy protein
Taco seasoning can now be found in a low sodium type too.
This blog isn't for vegans or super health nuts. It's for the average hungry girl who doesn't want to pack on pounds. It seems to be about taking very unhealthy options that people often crave, and trying to make them over. She doesn't advocate skipping fruits, veggies, whole grains at meals. These are snacks that she is talking about. We all need a tasty snack once in a while. This is probably for the person who is likely to reach for the chips & candy too often. Small changes can make a big difference.

I agee with Lillit. These are horrible snacks. They are not healthy at all. I hate to say it, but they sound like "eating disorder" foods where the only goal of one's diet is to stay skinny. There are are an incredible amount of healthy snacks available that will keep your body healthy and fit. These "recipies" are disgusting.
the rice cakes sounds tasty .will try them out soon.
you can also put the cool whip between graham crackers and freeze. yery good ,but a few more calories

This site ought to be shut down for suggesting Cool Whip Free is nutritional and guilt free. High Fructose Corn Syrup and Hydrogenated oils are the worst for your heart.

I think that's ridiculous. The key word used was "snack". In my opinion, a person needs a little variety in life and variety can really help one to stick to a weight loss plan. If you stuck to the fish and fresh fruit plan you might be likely to binge on a chocolate cake.

Lillit: you're taking this too far. She's not saying these snacks are here to replace everyday nutrient needs, shes just saying that those women (in other words, most woman) who have a difficult time controlling their need to snack can substitute these in place of high calorie snacks and not feel as guilty.
(Thank you Kelly P, I just read your entire post and saw you explained the same thing:])

Why not try nature's snack food? Fruit! Low fat- lots of satisfaction and stops any craving for sweets. Eat a banana and a couple of strawberries in low-fat vanilla yogurt. You won't be hungry for a few hours. I worry about all the crap in processed food. That doesn't make me a health nut. I choose not to eat animals mostly because I don't want to die or get sick from eating them. I don't trust our "government" to regulate the food supply anymore because they've proven themselves to be inept. When will people realize that "you are what you eat"?

You obviously receive money from all the companies that you so shamelessly plug here. No wonder you don't seem to pair or promot anything fresh. Who can afford to buy all brand name stuff in this day and age?
Kudos to previous posters who pointed out how incredibly processed all these items are. Quick and easy shouldn't be a substitute for healthy and actually good for you.

People who are protesting over the non nutritional value in these snacks...realize...there are people out there just not ready to take a GIANT step to totally helathy so we ease them into it slowly and hopefully gradually they willalso reach for the healthier items as well. I agree with the people who have been saying ...there are people who are going to grab chips and other fatty foods so they may as well be grabbing a lesser of evils by starting with something that may catch their fancy...lower fat intake IS healthier than high. And yes these are full of sugars and junk but thats todays society../these are also simple , easy . quick to do so it IS a healthier alternative to START with dont we think?

I agree with Kelly P. You are EXACTLY right! For the people who don't have the best diets these changes can be small improvements to help them to eat healthier.

wow....i both agree and disagree with jana and lilli. you do need some other things to become full instead of these empty calories. but for going into the theatre for a movie...you aren't going to bring broiled fish or chicken. i look forward to trying the candyish and the popcorn. i would probaby want to try the plain popcorn, because i dont know how that would taste on butter like popcorn. keep up the good work
