Starbucks Shockers & Fantastic Finds

Ahhh, Starbucks...we give you credit for trying to conjure up some better-for-you food 'n' drink options these days. But the truth is, some of your seemingly "healthy" offerings are pretty disastrous. Hungry Girl is here with the 411 on what's okay to chew and sip these days at the 'Bucks.

FANTASTIC FINDS!

Hungry Girl approved...

Iced Tazo Green Tea Latte

(190 calories/ 0g fat/ 39g carbs/ 1g fiber/ 29g sugar/ 100mg sodium/ 8g protein)
Hurray!  An icy, creamy, fat-free treat for under 200 calories! This latte is tea-rific.

Caffe Misto/ Café Au Lait

(90 calories/ 0g fat/ 13g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 11g sugar/ 120mg sodium/ 9g protein)

Yum...this milk/coffee concoction blends your favorite fresh coffee with frothy milk. Stick with fat-free milk to keep your calorie and fat counts low.

Caramel Frappuccino Light Blended Coffee

(180 calories/ 3.5g fat/ 39g carbs/ 3g fiber/ 28g sugar/ 310mg sodium/ 7g protein)

Can a "Caramel Frappuccino" really get a thumbs-up from Hungry Girl? It sure can (and does!). Starbucks nailed it with this light, blended Frap-o-fantasticness!

Grisinni - Yogurt or Chocolate Dipped

(80-90 calories/ 3-4g fat/ 11-15g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 28g sugar/ 60-100mg sodium/ 1g protein)
Mmmm...Starbucks has dessert-ified this classic Italian breadstick by dipping it in either sweet yogurt or creamy chocolate. Crunchy, sweet, and low-cal? Grazie, Grisinni!

Tazo Passion Tea Lemonade

(120 calories/ 0g fat/ 30g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 29g sugar/ 15mg sodium/ 0g protein)

Look! It's a modern-day Arnold Palmer (that embarrassing drink your dad used to order). Starbucks' version blends fruity Tazo tea with tart lemonade for a refreshing, mouth-watering beverage. Try 'em made with green or black Tazo teas, too.

Mocha Frappuccino Light Blended Coffee

(180 calories/ 1.5g fat/ 36g carbs/ 4g fiber/ 25g sugar/ 300g sodium/ 7g protein)

Wow...another decadent frozen treat with hardly any fat! Made of yummy mocha and icy blended coffee, this thing is like a creamy chocolate smoothie! If only all SB's treats were as guilt-free as this one...

Nutritionals for Fantastic Finds beverages are for Grande sizes made with nonfat milk and (doy!) no whipped cream.

SHOCKERS!

Avoid these, please...

Low Fat Apricot Blueberry Muffin
(450 calories/ 7g fat/ 89g carbs/ 2g fiber/ 56g sugar/ 70mg sodium/ 6g protein)
This one seems innocent enough -- low-fat and fruit-filled. Sounds like a dieter's dream, really. But this monstrosity of a muffin's got more calories than a big ol' doughy bagel! Don't get suckered into the idea of "low fat." Things aren't always what they seem.

Banana Coconut Frappuccino® Blended Coffee with whipped cream

(550 calories/ 16g fat/ 92g carbs/ 1g fiber/ 81g sugar/ 270mg sodium/ 6g protein)
Mmmmmmm, banana, coconut and coffee. Even we had trouble resisting this one. That is until we caught the freakishly frightening 550-calorie price tag on it! You can eat FOUR large bananas and drink countless cups of coffee before reaching that calorie count! Granted, this one doesn't exactly sound healthy, but still...

Carrot Cake Muffin
(680 calories/ 40g fat/ 75g carbs/ 3g fiber/ 49g sugar/ 260mg sodium/ 8g protein)
Carrots are vegetables, so how bad can this little muffin be, right? Uhhhh, try worst-on-our-list bad. It shouldn't really shock you though.... Anything with cake AND muffin in its name cannot be a sensible snack choice.

Blackberry Green Tea Frappuccino® Blended Crème with whipped cream
(560 calories/ 15g fat/ 91g carbs/ 1g fiber/ 78g sugar/ 330mg sodium/ 13g protein)
Here's another seemingly healthy bev. Green tea and berries are good for you. So what's a little blended crème mixed in? Something crazy's going on here, because this light-sounding frap clocks in at a button-popping 560 calories and 15 grams of fat. Skip this one, people!

Reduced Fat Cranberry Muffin

(450 calories/ 12g fat/ 75g carbs/ 4g fiber/ 38g sugar/ 220mg sodium/ 9g protein)
How on Earth can a McDonald's full-fat apple pie contain fewer calories than a reduced fat muffin? And wait, before you answer, think about part two of our question: How can something with 12 grams of fat be considered "reduced fat"?  Don't bother answering these -- they're rhetorical. Your time would be better spent avoiding this breakfast blunder at all costs.

Caramel Apple Cider with whipped cream

(410 calories/10g fat/ 76g carbs/ 0g fiber/ 68g sugar/ 30mg sodium/ 0g protein)
Ah, this one brings back memories of holidays and childhood. Unfortunately, it also brings enough fat and calories to trump an actual caramel apple...by a lot. Bust out your old yearbook if you want to reminisce, and leave this sad cider in the past.

Reduced Fat Blueberry Coffee Cake
(350 calories/ 11g fat/ 61g carbs / 1g fiber/ 37g sugar/ 430mg sodium/ 4g protein)
Oops! Here's yet another fruity poser behind the glass of the pastry display. That crazy-looking, buttery chocolate croissant next to it has less fat and fewer calories (yep, it's true).

Strawberries & Crème Frappuccino® Blended Crème with whipped cream

(570 calories/ 15g fat/ 95g carbs/ 1g fiber/ 83g sugar/ 330mg sodium/12g protein)
Okay, this one can't be too bad, right? Starbucks' website claims it's just strawberries and milk. With those staggeringly high nutritionals, we have serious doubts about what kind of crazy berries and monstrous moo juice are in this one. Berry disappointing (sorry, couldn't resist)!

Nutritionals for all beverage Shockers are for Grande size beverages made with whole milk.

Starbucks has nasty coffee (wake up people...they burn their beans in the roasting process!!) that is extremely bitter tasting. So...guess these tips won't help me much!

Anybody that knows good coffee knows Starbucks sucks! They burn their coffee beans! And now the're pushing every other coffee shop out of business. Two Barney's coffee shops in my city have just closed down and Starbucks moved it! NOOO! Starbucks is like a crack dealer, there at every corner now!

Thank you! I've looked everywhere to find out what the points were for only muffin at Starbucks called lowfat. It has higher points (9) than their entire lowfat breakfast sandwich (7)!

i also love starbucks, specially the rhumba frappuccino and chocolate dome cake... i don't worry about the calorie count though i have a kid already i can still maintain my figure without so much efforts counting every ounce of calorie content in it, no offense but come on people why does your bodies retain the fats from the foods you take? something is wrong and you can do something about it... i just can't bear the pain of not enjoying the food i eat... animals that live on wild? they don't get OBESE so something is off the balance in y'alls lifestyle.... im trying to help, not offend ok......

yes animals are in the wild, people nowadays live on suburbs on a routine live on fastfoods sit in front of a computer for 8 hours, wolf down a dozen krispy kremesand whatnot, to those people who can't read between the lines, you are eating a lot and moving less, everything can be delivered. suggest we eat half veggies a day, if you'll eat 100% veggies in one month where would your body get the fat? but how do cows get fat on milk eating only grass? anyway thank you for reading

Mayanita, you hit it right on the nail. People need to move more and eat less. Anyways, I am almost sure that these calories are counted from the Venti sized drinks. I am quite baffled by the high carb contents of most of them. For instance, on the banana coconut frappacino, a great one, just how much bananas and coconuts are they using? Are they real natural bananas and coconuts? It is a bit hard to see just what they are putting in our drinks. They add all the ingredients so discreeetly. Ok, they also add the regular milk, cream,(ok, what is in this?), add more sugar, and voila! There you have it. I think the Venti is what, 24 oz? It alll adds up folks. I stop at starbucks quite often too.
