Black coffee tastes better. Sugar and fat taste bad. We should all eat and drink what makes us happy. The weight will follow.

I am espresso junkie, but was forced to cut back when I learned how many calories I was drinking with some of those "coffee cocktails" -- ordering drinks with whole milk, whipped cream, and sugared syrups. I didn't realize that I might have as well been drinking a milkshake for the calorie content. I still drink mochas, but in moderation, since I am trying to lose weight. I use 1% or nonfat instead of skim milk and no whip.

Wow! I think it is all food for thought stuff. The comments @ caffeine before a workout are great! I do not agree with the big mac and such, yuck! Talk @ defeating the purpose. I have been a vegetarian for 19 years and I think weight control is all about the careful intake of nutritious whole foods and exercise. You R what U eat! A high fiber-protein diet really works if you are looking to shed a lot of weight. Everyone is an individual and what works for some might not work for all! Mostly good feed back though, rock-on Hungry Girl!

I have either a tiny can of tuna or coffee before my workouts and let me tell you it helps alot! 1/2 a cup of coffee with 1 sugar keeps me fueled for my 2hr weights and cardio. Just be sure to load up on water and fruit after the workout.

How neat, I never knew those things. I'll keep them in mind when dieting.

to: singleoid If you want to amp up your metabolism, there is a much better way to do it then eating a Big Mac and fries. Try drinking green tea instead. It won't clog your arteries like the fast food meal!

Don't believe all the other garbage.. I was once over 200 lbs.. Now down to 120lbs... I can do it everyone can.......... Please no pills.. Just change you lifestyle.. Have that piece of cake but not the entire cake.... Moderation is the key....

Where is everyone's sense of humor? I think the guy that said his doctor suggested a Big Mac and fries before a workout was joking. Sheesh. I thought my sense of humor was off. Anyways this is a great site and very active. Any of you folks from Texas?

KiKi I think your kidding yourself with diet pills, try some good all fashioned sweat, a "walk when the weather is fine " is not enough, believe me Iv'e tried ,you need to set yourself atleast 4 days aweek of a half hour or more cardio and/or weight training. Try a dvd set like Turbo Jam, its fantastic I have lost 40lb from doing these work outs and It does work. You can do them when the weather is bad, from home. You just have to set yourself a goal and watch what you eat, burn those extra calories and u will loose 10lb in no time.

I dont care what they say, but a life of counting the calories in your drink is not a life! I understand if we are talking of milk shakes and sodas, but I refuse!!! REFUSE! to count the calories in my iced tea, or worry about the sugar calories in my flavored water. It reminds me of people who weigh their food. Thats just so sad, is like a food prison. All in moderation. Thats it. Thats the way to live.

Try this? I am a little overweight and bounce back and forth between feeling I'm a good weight and being overweight. For the past ten weeks, my work has had a Biggest Loser contest. What I have noticed is that since I have consciously told myself that it's "ok" when I'm hungry (being that I have plenty of fat and am in no danger of dying, etc.) I am eating a lot less and am steadily dropping weight. Normally, it's a big push and then a big 'back where I started. I wonder if we need to tell ourselves it's ok to be hungry? Then change what we eat? It's like any addiction maybe, one day, one hour, one hunger pain at a time. I'm liking this new train of thought for myself.

I would be suspicious of a doctor who told me to eat a Big Mac and fries before a workout. It would seem that he would be trying to drum up more business for himself. I don't think doctors today are very motivated to keep us healthy... if they were, they would put themselves out of business.

Dear babehmf: I used to work 'graveyard' shift as well. it was especially difficult to lose weight because of the schedule, much less getting the sleep needed. Changing the body's natural clock takes time. Changing it back is even worse! Anyway, I wish I could remember the last name of the author, but there is a book out called "The 3-Hour Diet" by Jorge...something-or-other. That helped out tremendously. The jist of the book is to keep the metabolism going. Every three hours, eat something between 100 and 300 calories. During the night, some of the better snacks/meals to have are vegetables (of course), measured cereal, and any protein source. What worked for me before Katrina was having my carb meal (usually a baked potato) around 9:30/10:00, then from there, vegetables every 3 hours until the end of my shift. After my shift, I would go to the gym (in this case, Curves), and then have a sensible breakfast/'dinner', usually a chicken breast. The exercise worked wonders for the spirit after a stressful night shift, and the protein helped the body maintain and build muscle with the exercise. and it had one other added value: by the time I got home, I was ready to relax for an hour, then sleep until it was time to get up. Everyone has mentioned the dark room for the sleep, and I have also found a cooler room helps as well. and there is one thing I forgot! LOTS OF WATER!! I have gotten into the habit of having a glass of water with every other drink I have. between "The 3-Hour Diet" and Curves, I lost 40 lbs and 10% body fat in 7 months. Good luck with the night shift, and I hope everyone else finds their 'fit' moments as well!

-kiki- ive tried the diet pills and i will say if you stick to them and follow the instructions, they should work. id recommend slim quick(the women pill) or hydroxycut. i know personally that those two work with losing weight but of course there is exercise required. i guess they helped with the cravings, i found myself not as hungry often.

Losing weight is just the side effect of a healthy active lifestyle. The bottom line is what amy, daman and musclehead shared: you will only lose weight if you burn more than you eat. Be very aware of what you put into your mouth (familiarize yoursel with a healthy balanced diet like the Zone diet), and find several physical activities that you can interchange that gives you a daily activity (for example, if you jog one day, walk the next, or do yoga on an off day.) Because I have had chronic lower back pain since my late 20's, I've gotten to be fanatic about daily stretching and core strengthening. Walking on days you don't feel like a strenuous workout at least keeps you in the game. Good luck!

totally agree as i sip my coffee before my 10 k run great to help me rev up. After a workout the perfect snack is actually a 12 ounce glass of low fat chocolate milk perfect, it contains the right amount of carbs and protein and for us women its a great way of getting in some calcium:)
