Just How Bad Is Your Easter Candy?

Did you know that those big chocolate Easter bunnies contain as much as 1,000 calories each? Or that one type of Cadbury Egg has almost twice as much fat as the original? Read on for more of HG's Easter shockers, plus surprising guilt-free food finds!

Shocking Easter Stats!

On average, more than 60 million chocolate bunnies are produced each Easter season. You don't even want to know how many calories those buns add up to!

One original Cadbury Creme Egg has 150 calories and 5 fat grams -- that's a lot for a small chocolate sphere! But watch out, because a Cadbury Caramel Egg has almost twice as much fat (9g!) and packs in 170 calories. Eeeks!

Beware of the Chocolate Bunny!

A large chocolate bunny can have as much as 1,000 calories and 50 grams of fat -- and those things are often hollow, people! Even if you just bite off the head, you're still swallowing hundreds of calories and several dozen fat grams. Here's what you'd have to do to burn off the calories in the whole thing*:

Rake your lawn for over three and half hours straight

OR

Wheel a cart around the grocery store nonstop for close to six hours

OR

Actively participate in an Easter egg hunt for more than five and half consecutive hours!

*Estimates based on a 155-lb. adult.

Guilt-Free Easter Indulgences!

Marshmallow Peeps  Milk chocolate bunnies and creme-filled chocolate eggs may be diet-busters, but Marshmallow Peeps shaped like bunnies and chicks are an awesome way to celebrate without wasting tons of fat and calories. In fact, all Peeps are fat-free! Five Chicks have a total of 140 calories, four Bunnies have 110 calories, and four Cocoa Bunnies have 120 calories! Plus, the Chicks come in a sugar-free version, only 20 calories each.

Jelly Belly Jelly Beans  Jelly Belly beans have just around 4 calories each, so feel free to get festive with some pastel-colored ones this Easter. Some of our fave for Easter are Tutti-Fruitti, Berry Blue, Tangerine, Cotton Candy, and Buttered Popcorn. They even make a Spring Mix, perfect for guilt-free Easter chewin'! Pssst... Jelly Belly makes sugar-free jelly beans than have only around 2 calories each (but quite a bit of sugar alcohols, so consider yourself warned).

Easter is actually the second highest holiday for candy sales (only Halloween is more candy-centric). Americans spend close to 2 billion dollars on candy each Easter. So watch your candy consumption this season, cause summertime is just around the corner!

When I was a little kid, I was allergic to chocolate so I always had to get peanut butter, or cocoa butter bunnies and Peeps as well as jelly beans.

You know, I'll STILL eat my chocolate eggs. But This year I'm playing a game to see how long I can make them last. We'll see how that goes. I hate plain chocolate bunnies though, so thats one good thing...

It's not shocking. Read the labels. Look up the candy on the Internet. If people are too lazy or dumb to make the effort to find out what's in their food, that's their problem.

Peeps dipped in chocolate, OMG, that sounds so good! BUT, I have a problem with chocolate. I'm obsessed, I think! I don't even deserve to eat any Easter candy because I'm always eating dark chocolate anyway!

Peeps are nasty. The only thing they are good for is "Peep Jousting." Put 2 Peeps, facing each other, about an inch apart in the center of the microwave. Place a toothpick "under" each wing. Set microwave for about a minute, depending on the wattage. Fire up microwave. Peeps will inflate until one toothpick punctures and deflates its opposite number. You can wager on this, BTW; loser cleans the microwave. A couple of guys subjected Peeps to a number of destructive "tests" a few years back. Not even a bath in sulphuric acid will eradicate them completely.

Peeps are sick !! I would rather have the chocolate in moderation than resort to eating those disgusting things. I didn't even like those as a kid. Go for the dark chocolate Dove eggs. They are small so just eat a few to satisfy your sweet tooth and let the kids eat those peeps.

The coco Peeps are OK. But I've got to agree that the best thing to do with them is put them in the microwave and puff 'em up. We do this at my office on a regular basis and call it a Peep Show.
