February is American Heart Month! Check out HG's good-for-your-heart, guilt-free, get-gorgeous food finds...

Serve up Salmon!

HG's Pick:
Chicken of the Sea Wild Caught Salmon Steak in a Mandarin Orange Glaze
PER SERVING (1 pouch): 170 calories, 1.5g fat, 470mg sodium, 14g carbs, 0g fiber, 12g sugars, 25g protein

Salmon is stocked with omega-3 fatty acids, the stuff known for reducing the risk of heart disease and obesity. Those omegas are also said to keep hair, skin, and nails healthy. We chose this saucy citrus salmon 'cuz it's low in fat and not too high in sodium. Plus, it's easy to plate up a few of these pouches with some veggies for a delicious dinner for two. Find these pouches hangin' out near the canned tuna at the supermarket.

Chomp on Dark Chocolate and Whole Grains!

HG's Pick: Quaker Simple Harvest Multigrain Chewy Granola Bar, Dark Chocolate Chunk
PER SERVING (1 bar): 150 calories, 4.5g fat, 95mg sodium, 26g carbs, 2g fiber, 10g sugars, 2g protein

You may already know that dark chocolate is a heart-healthy food. Flavonoids in the sweet treat keep cholesterol from gathering in blood vessels, reduce the risk of blood clots, and can also prevent clogged arteries. But that's not all these new bars from Quaker are equipped with. They're also made from whole grain rolled oats, wheat, and barley. And those whole grains battle heart disease and help you maintain a healthy weight. As if that weren't enough, recent studies show they can reduce your likelihood of getting gum disease and help to prevent tooth loss (we'd like to keep our teeth, thank you!). But the best thing about this superstar bar is its delicious taste! Buy a box, and share the love...

Chew Pistachios!

HG's Pick: Everybody's Nuts! California Pistachios, European Roast
PER SERVING (1/2 cup, 30g without shells): 170 calories, 14g fat, 160mg sodium, 8g carbs, 3g fiber, 2g sugars, 6g protein

Nuts (in general) are known for their cardiovascular health benefits, but pistachios are extra-special. They're chock-full of phytosterols (AKA cholesterol cutters). And they're rich in vitamin B6, which gives you glowy skin. These particular pistachios rock our world for so many reasons! They come in adorable, colorful packages complete with a kooky nut mascot (Stach), they have an "always open" guarantee (meaning you'll get a free box if you find a closed nut!), and they're available in many varieties (including Roasted No Salt and Salt & Pepper). Soooo cool!

Sip Some Soymilk!

HG's Pick: 8th Continent Light Vanilla Soymilk
PER SERVING (1 cup): 60 calories, 2g fat, 110mg sodium, 5g carbs, 0g fiber, 5g sugars, 6g protein

Even though this stuff is light and low in calories, it's loaded with heart-happy ingredients. Soy protein's been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and lower cholesterol. Research has also shown that soy may help reduce wrinkles and other environmental effects on the skin. We can't think of a better way to get our fix than with this sweet 'n' creamy, guilt-free stuff. We use it to make creamy drinks, smoothies, bread puddings, and more! Pssst...it comes in Chocolate, too. Find it in the fridge section of the supermarket.

I'm not so sure about the quaker bars....they have a lot of fat and sugar and not very much fiber! I think Kashi bars are more nutritious (but they don't come with chocolate!) ..

Costco carries a protein bar called "Premier" also available on the internet. It has 32 grams of protein and the cost is around 20 bucks for 24 bars in four flavors including an incredible chocolate fudge all in just 300 calories!

This web page is good for people who want to eat and not diet. Diets may take the weight off quickly, but once the weight is gone people usually return to eating non healthy foods. This page is a excellent way of showing good foods to eat without having to give up your chocolat pleasures!

Those pistacios look good but I bet they are expensive, especially if they are supposed to be all open. It's probalby cheaper to buy in bulk, even if there are some unopened ones.

8th continent soymilk is my favorite. I love the light vanilla. I have tried other soymilk, not only do they have more calories, they don't taste as good as 8th continent. If you have'nt tried it thinking soymilk will taste terrible, you will be surprised how well it tastes.

yes, you can buy 8th continent soymilk at wal-mart. i recently switched from the silk brand, because it costs less, contains fewer calories, and tastes just as good!

To add to the salmon ideas, I bought cans of salmon, kind of afraid of what I was going to be eating but it turned out great. You can make a salad really easy with canned salmon, chick peas, onion, lemon juice and salt and pepper. I also made patties with whole wheat cous cous and canned salmon, just throw an egg in there and maybe a little bit of bread crumbs so you can shape them then either bake or fry them. You can add whatever extras you want to either recipe, like herbs or other veggies, and it'll come out great.

One thing to watch with the pistachios, or any nut is if you want the healthy oils don't buy anything roasted it ruins the good oil . Stick with nuts that haven't been roasted.

If you are concerned about salmon and mercury, look for farm-raised salmon, although, salmon is generally very low in mercury content. The EPA advises that you may have 2 meals a week without damaging effects. (if you are pregnant or a child, they recommend 1 meal a week)

Come on you guys, Soy milk is dangerous to your health and it does absolutely nothing good for your skin when ingested. Soy products applied topically is a diffrent matter as well as soy made naturally, like endame and tofu. stay away from roasted soy products and "milk". Skin healthy options for a milk substitute are Almond Milk or Rice milk. These are both naturally occuring products and don't have to be cemically altered like Soy beans, to create a liquid. Almond milk is actually lower in calories than soy and has the health benefits of nuts because it is a nut. Besides, if you want to lower your cholesterol, eat a small bowl of oatmeal for breakfast every morning. http://www.physorg.com/news122663958.html I have to disagree with Mapgirlaj. Farm raised fish has much higher amounts of Mercury than wild caught. http://www.healthcastle.com/wildsalmon-farmraisedsalmon.shtml

Oh and another thing. Soy is the number one culprit for the loss of rainforest now. Don't drink soy milk, save the rain forest. Soy is BAD BAD BAD http://www.rainforestrelief.org/What_to_Avoid_and_Alternatives/Soy.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Rainforest
