The Hottest New 100-Calorie Snacks of '08

POST A COMMENT »

It's a brand-new year, and you know what that means? All-new guilt-free foods to chew! Here are very latest portion-controlled, 100-calorie products that your pal Hungry Girl sniffed out...

Hostess 100 Calorie Packs, Cinnamon Streusel Muffins

PER SERVING (1 pack, 3 cakes): 100 calories, 3g fat, 135mg sodium, 21g carbs, 4g fiber, 7g sugars, 2g protein

Last year, Hostess rolled out 100-calorie packs each containing 3 icing-topped mini cakes in either chocolate, carrot, or golden cake. And these things were so good, HGers voted them the best 100-calorie pack of 2007. Well, the lovely Hostess with the mostest has done it again. These new packs contain 3 mini streusel muffins. Each bite-sized dessert is topped with sweet crumbly goodness, and each pack contains a whopping 4 grams of fiber. BTW, there are also Blueberry and Banana versions of these packs, but the cinnamon ones are the best by far (they taste exactly like Drake's Coffee Cakes and are so cute that we want to drink 3 tiny cups of coffee with 'em!).

Kettle Brand Bakes Lightly Salted Potato Chips in 100-calorie packs
PER SERVING (0.8-oz. bag): 100 calories, 2.5g fat, 90mg sodium, 17g carbs, 2g fiber, 0g sugars, 2g protein

We dig the Kettle Brand Bakes line of potato chips, which have fewer calories and fat grams than regular chips. But as serious chip-lovers know, sticking to one serving when you've got a ginormous bag in front of you is next to impossible. Enter KB's new 100-calorie packs of their Bakes Lightly Salted Potato Chips! Each pack promises 18 chips (very impressive!). We hope the other Bakes Potato Chip flavors--Hickory Honey Barbeque and Aged White Cheddar--make their way into these 100-calorie packs soon!

Hershey's 100 Calorie Wafer Bars: Reese's Peanut Butter and York Peppermint
PER SERVING (1 bar): 100 calories, 6g fat, 10 - 50mg sodium, 11g carbs, <1g fiber, 8 - 9g sugars, <1 - 2g protein

We love, love, love when companies don't just downsize the portion of their product and call it a 100-calorie pack, but actually invent a whole new snack food that has just 100 calories. That's why these Wafer Bars from Hershey's have earned some serious treat cred in our book. The Reese's bars contain a layer of peanut butter between 2 cookie-like wafers, all encased in a chocolate shell. The York Peppermint ones feature peppermint cream surrounded by light chocolatey wafers dunked in chocolate coating. Yum!!! Congrats, Hershey's!

Snyder's of Hanover Multigrain Sunflower Chips in 100-calorie packs: French Onion and Southwest Cheddar
PER SERVING (0.74-oz. bag): 100 calories, 4g fat, 140mg sodium, 14g carbs, 1g fiber, 1g sugars, 1g protein*

Another chip company has clearly gotten the memo about serving up delicious crunchy snacks in smaller bags. These Multigrain Sunflower Chips contain lots of good-for-you whole grains and boast 40% less fat than regular potato chips. French onion fans and cheddar lovers across the globe will dig these flavor-packed, portion-controlled snacks. Just make sure you stick to one pack at a time!

*Nutritional information for Snyder's of Hanover packs are estimates calculated from the nutritional information provided for the 1-oz. servings.

ridiculous, just advertizing to people who can't count calories. You can have practically anything for 100 calories, if you have appropriate amount.

in response to megablair's comment I agree, but we when I don't have to count out portions I'd rather pay for convenience. just "grab-n-go".

we can all cout calories megablair. But it is so much easier and more convient to not have to count out individual servings and portion them away. Plus when you have a whole bag of delicious chips in front of you it is very hard to stop at one serving...with this you feel satisfied and you have had yummie chips. I for one love all the 100 calorie potions that are coming out.

I'm having difficulty understanding how a site like this ends up with so many negative comments. If you dont want info on low calorie snacks, then why are you even HERE reading this? ;) Personally, i love this site and all these little snacks. Yum!

I totally agree with you BelleBlossom. Maybe they need to start their own site to air out their negatives. I personally love this site and the info. Its not that we are all making meals out of these snacks, moderation and a sweet or crunchy snack every now and then will not hurt anyone.

Most chips have a high amount of sodium...Kettle brand or not...please be careful when selecting chips for a snack. Try Organic Blue Corn Chips from Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or Bloom...go to the Healthy Foods section for the best chips! Look for packs that state "low in sodium" or just turn the bag over for a quick look.

If you take a look at all those 100 calorie products, keep in mind that just because its low in calories does not necessarily mean its good for you and you will lose weight. Alot of these products are deceiving, thats how they get your, by tricking you. The product might be low in calories, but high in carbs, in sugar or in sodium which is not good for anyone looking to lose weight. Sugar, which turns into carbs as energy which turns into fat which are stored carbs when not burned off through exercise and Sodium which is salt retains the water inside our body thus adding weight. Its a vicious cycle that many people fall into and get wrapped up in so please just take the time to do some research and find the one that best suits your needs because the "right combination snack" is slim to come by. Thanks.
