I question the healthfulness of Fiber One Bars, just one half of them gives me very bad gas, lol. And they contain Shellac and Ethanol. While I have heard of using shellac in foods, I have never heard of using ethanol....what is the reason for these ingredients. After seeing that they were included, I gave the rest of the box away and haven't eaten them since.

Ethanol is just a sugar alcohol. And they give you gas because of the fiber. If you eat a high-fiber diet regularly your body gets used to it and that lovely side effect goes away.

It's not talking about Splenda, which is an artificial, altered form of sugar. Stevia is an all-natural sweetener used for centuries in South America. It's very strong so only a little is needed. I love it, and it doesn't have all the laboratory testing and fiddling that other artificial sweeteners have.

I love the taste of those Fiber One Bars. They taste just like a candy bar, but like mentioned here...I can't stand the gas they give me. I've tried to just keep on eating them, hoping my body gets used to it, but how long does it take? Geeze!

Stevia is a great product - a little goes a long way. Has anyone tried baking with it?
Back to Splenda - I've read that this is even more harmful than the other artificial sweeteners (bottomline, contains arsenic).

I, too, have used Stevia for a couple of years, and find it better than the other subs. I'm glad to see that it will be available now, because it is difficult to find in some of the stores I frequent. You must use less than what we were used to with the other sweetners, though. A little goes a long way.

too many foods including cereals, breads and bars claim they are high fiber. 2 g is not high. Fiber One is the highest fiber cereal?+10. Arnold Bread is about 3 g. High sodium is featured in many foods and is just as harmful, if not more so, especially in soups and frozen foods including Boston Market & M. Callenders

ETHANOL:
Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, drinking alcohol or grain alcohol, is a flammable, colorless, mildly toxic chemical compound, and is best known as the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.
Because of ethanol's ease of production and its low toxicity, it finds widespread use as a solvent for substances intended for human contact or consumption, including scents, flavorings, colorings, and medicines. In chemistry it is both an essential solvent and a fundamental feedstock for the synthesis of other products.

All I can say is that if you have a problem with "chemical" ingredients, you shouldn't be buying ANYTHING off the shelves. If you really do your research, you will find that many of these chemicals truly are harmless to the human body unless you eat ridiculous amounts of them, and are still worth the extra fiber and lower fat and calories they bring to the table.

Going on a diet is easy but staying on a diet and a healthy eatin plan is IMPOSSIBLE. That is the motto of the site that changed my life. http://www.zylenebody.com. I went to the site in September and ordered the supplements - Zylene, Nutravex and Biozyte for myself and my wife. We are both in our 40s and need to get back into shape and living healthier. With the help of the tips on the site, the diet plan ( living plan), and the supplements, we have lost weight and feel and look amazing! Take a look at the tips on the site and the eating plan. It does really work and most of all the supplements have killed our cravings, curbed our appetites and give us tremendous energy! http://www.zylenebody.com

hey, posters: it's neither the fiber nor the ethanol in Fiber One bars that causes gas. It's the insane amount per portion of high fructose corn syrup each bar has. Read Twinkie, Deconstructed if you want to know about high fructose corn syrup. This book is great. It informs without preaching and pointing fingers.

A comment for "f", (#9) - advertising for ANY kind of "buddy" on the net can be very dangerous. If you need support and encouragement, try Weight Watchers. They always have a free sign-up period at the firsts of each year, and their weekly dues are minimum. Not only do you get the support and encouragement from folks who have been there, you can absolutely learn to change your entire eating lifestyle. Most folks I know who are WW members visit the Hungry Girl site regularly too. You can do it, and never alone!

If fiber is messing up your gut, and it can mine too, then you probably need to drink more water too. Your gut cannot get used to it without water being there to help it through.
Good luck. I love the fiber one bars and GoLean Crunch bars too! They used to give me gas but not anymore and especially when I drink enough water

My advice is to forget eating at QSR's (McDonald's, B-King, Carls Jr, Del Taco, etc) Go to a Philly's Best near you and order your food (i.e. Turkey, Chicken Hoagie, no cheese & no Bread). Guess what? Now you have a healthy fiber salad.

In ref. to a post on the first page, ethanol isn't a sugar alcohol. Its the alcohol that occurs in beverages like beer, wine, and wiskey. Sugar alcohol in foods definately causes gas and abdomenal upset unless eaten in very small quanities. While fiber can cause gas, this effect goes away if consumed regularly (as one of the posts points out).

Stevia's an herb that's been used in Japanese cooking for centuries. I've used it, and I like it. My husband's a Type One diabetic, and he likes it, too.
