4 Good-for-You Food Trends for 2008

POST A COMMENT »

Wanna know what to expect in 2008 when it comes to packaged foods, dining out, and everything else in the food and diet world? Hungry Girl's got the 411...

Ditch the word "Diet"

We've been saying this forever. The idea of being "on a diet" immediately sets you up for being "off a diet" at some point. Making actual lifestyle changes you can stick to is a far better idea. And it looks like food manufacturers are catching on. Kraft is currently scrapping the name of their South Beach Diet line of foods to reflect this change in attitude -- the line will now be called South Beach Living. It'll still feature nutritious, healthy stuff. But gone is the connotation that you have to be dieting to eat well. Even the Coca-Cola Company is onboard. They've already rolled out an awesome line of no-calorie colas without the word "diet" anywhere in sight -- Coke Zero, Coke Cherry Zero, Coke Vanilla Zero, and Sprite Zero all hit shelves in the past year or so. And Dr Pepper Zero and Fanta Zero are already a hit in other parts of the world -- we're hoping to see 'em on US shelves in 2008!

Portion Control Hits Restaurants

It's no secret that portion-controlled packaged foods are huge sellers. So why shouldn't restaurants get a piece of that pie? T.G.I. Friday's kicked off this trend in '07, when they debuted their Right Portion, Right Price menu. McDonald's also rolled out their Snack Wraps, giving on-the-goers a mini meal option. Even Starbucks has an underground "Short" option for their beverages. This food trend is expected to explode in 2008. So get ready to see more downsized dishes making the menu at even more restaurants in the upcoming year. FYI -- with the average restaurant entree currently packing absurd amounts of calories and fat grams (see some of our scariest finds by clicking here!), controlled portions are perfect for people hoping to downsize themselves in the upcoming year.

Stevia Goes Mainstream

Once upon a time, packaged foods were only sweetened with sugar, which was sad for calorie counters. Then along came no-calorie artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose. That was good news for people watching their sugar (and calorie) intake, but not-so-good news for those opposed to artificial stuff. Well, the best news may be on the way in '08. Stevia, an all-natural calorie-free sweetener already sold in powdered form, could become the latest sweetener to be used in packaged foods. Coca-Cola already filed 24 patent applications for the ingredient, and rumor has it other food brands are eager to jump on the Stevia bandwagon in '08 as well. Guilt-free and all-natural?! Keep your eyes, ears, and mouths open...

Fiber, Fiber Everywhere!

One of HG's fave food trends -- fiber -- is showing no signs of letting up. In fact, food companies are rolling out more decadent and delicious fiber-packed foods. So if the thought of munching on whole grains and figs doesn't excite you, prepare for some seriously crave-worthy fiberiffic foods. Fiber One, gurus of all things delicious and fiber-infused, are set to roll out a brand-new flavor of their insanely good Fiber One Chewy Bars. These things taste like candy bars, yet have only 140 - 150 calories and 4 - 4.5g fat. And each one is loaded with 9 grams of fiber! Another tasty bar brand debuting a new fiberiffic flavor is Gnu Foods. They oh-so-recently rolled out a Peanut Butter bar with just 150 calories and 3 grams of fat... and it's got twelve grams of fiber! Look for it on store shelves in '08. You can also expect to see fiber popping up in other yummy places -- muffins, chocolate, even ice cream. We can't wait for '08!!

I question the healthfulness of Fiber One Bars, just one half of them gives me very bad gas, lol. And they contain Shellac and Ethanol. While I have heard of using shellac in foods, I have never heard of using ethanol....what is the reason for these ingredients. After seeing that they were included, I gave the rest of the box away and haven't eaten them since.

Ethanol is just a sugar alcohol. And they give you gas because of the fiber. If you eat a high-fiber diet regularly your body gets used to it and that lovely side effect goes away.

Usually, fab. I think it stays if you have Celiac Disease and eat a lot of fiber that also contains gluten.

Splenda has been around and used for years. It's not like it's a new sweetner and is suddenly going to make this huge debut. It already did!

It might be the sugar alcohols, then.

It's not talking about Splenda, which is an artificial, altered form of sugar. Stevia is an all-natural sweetener used for centuries in South America. It's very strong so only a little is needed. I love it, and it doesn't have all the laboratory testing and fiddling that other artificial sweeteners have.

I love the taste of those Fiber One Bars. They taste just like a candy bar, but like mentioned here...I can't stand the gas they give me. I've tried to just keep on eating them, hoping my body gets used to it, but how long does it take? Geeze!

Stevia is a great product - a little goes a long way. Has anyone tried baking with it? Back to Splenda - I've read that this is even more harmful than the other artificial sweeteners (bottomline, contains arsenic).

I, too, have used Stevia for a couple of years, and find it better than the other subs. I'm glad to see that it will be available now, because it is difficult to find in some of the stores I frequent. You must use less than what we were used to with the other sweetners, though. A little goes a long way.

too many foods including cereals, breads and bars claim they are high fiber. 2 g is not high. Fiber One is the highest fiber cereal?+10. Arnold Bread is about 3 g. High sodium is featured in many foods and is just as harmful, if not more so, especially in soups and frozen foods including Boston Market & M. Callenders

ETHANOL: Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, drinking alcohol or grain alcohol, is a flammable, colorless, mildly toxic chemical compound, and is best known as the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages. Because of ethanol's ease of production and its low toxicity, it finds widespread use as a solvent for substances intended for human contact or consumption, including scents, flavorings, colorings, and medicines. In chemistry it is both an essential solvent and a fundamental feedstock for the synthesis of other products.

All I can say is that if you have a problem with "chemical" ingredients, you shouldn't be buying ANYTHING off the shelves. If you really do your research, you will find that many of these chemicals truly are harmless to the human body unless you eat ridiculous amounts of them, and are still worth the extra fiber and lower fat and calories they bring to the table.

Going on a diet is easy but staying on a diet and a healthy eatin plan is IMPOSSIBLE. That is the motto of the site that changed my life. http://www.zylenebody.com. I went to the site in September and ordered the supplements - Zylene, Nutravex and Biozyte for myself and my wife. We are both in our 40s and need to get back into shape and living healthier. With the help of the tips on the site, the diet plan ( living plan), and the supplements, we have lost weight and feel and look amazing! Take a look at the tips on the site and the eating plan. It does really work and most of all the supplements have killed our cravings, curbed our appetites and give us tremendous energy! http://www.zylenebody.com

You can find Stevia in GNC stores. It tastes good, is sweeter and is healthier than Splenda. Stevia is made from a plant that grows in Paraguay.

hey, posters: it's neither the fiber nor the ethanol in Fiber One bars that causes gas. It's the insane amount per portion of high fructose corn syrup each bar has. Read Twinkie, Deconstructed if you want to know about high fructose corn syrup. This book is great. It informs without preaching and pointing fingers.

A comment for "f", (#9) - advertising for ANY kind of "buddy" on the net can be very dangerous. If you need support and encouragement, try Weight Watchers. They always have a free sign-up period at the firsts of each year, and their weekly dues are minimum. Not only do you get the support and encouragement from folks who have been there, you can absolutely learn to change your entire eating lifestyle. Most folks I know who are WW members visit the Hungry Girl site regularly too. You can do it, and never alone!

If fiber is messing up your gut, and it can mine too, then you probably need to drink more water too. Your gut cannot get used to it without water being there to help it through. Good luck. I love the fiber one bars and GoLean Crunch bars too! They used to give me gas but not anymore and especially when I drink enough water

My advice is to forget eating at QSR's (McDonald's, B-King, Carls Jr, Del Taco, etc) Go to a Philly's Best near you and order your food (i.e. Turkey, Chicken Hoagie, no cheese & no Bread). Guess what? Now you have a healthy fiber salad.

In ref. to a post on the first page, ethanol isn't a sugar alcohol. Its the alcohol that occurs in beverages like beer, wine, and wiskey. Sugar alcohol in foods definately causes gas and abdomenal upset unless eaten in very small quanities. While fiber can cause gas, this effect goes away if consumed regularly (as one of the posts points out).

Stevia's an herb that's been used in Japanese cooking for centuries. I've used it, and I like it. My husband's a Type One diabetic, and he likes it, too.
