Check out HG's list of easy-to-pack, portable saviors...

Portion-Controlled Protein-Packed Snacks
We're convinced one of the biggest reasons people make bad food choices throughout the day is 'cuz they're too hungry to think straight! If your lunch break gets pushed back an hour or a long workday leads to a super-late dinner, you need some hunger-busting snacks that are full of protein but not fat and calories. Our current fave protein-packed snacks are Crum Creek's single-serving bags of Brilliantly Blended Soy Nut Mix (about 130 calories each, with soy nuts, sunflower seeds, raisins, chocolate chips, and more) and Blue Diamond Almonds 100 Calories Packs. Find the almonds with the other nuts at the supermarket (we mean on the shelves, not with the weirdos wandering around the parking lot!), and click here to buy Crum Creek's rockin' packs.

Sugar-Free Drink Mix Packets
Sometimes a sweet, fruity drink is all it takes to kick a craving. For those times when you've eaten enough but simply must satisfy your sweet tooth, just spike a bottle of water with a packet of sugar-free drink mix. Lots of companies (Crystal Light, Wyler's Light, and even Disney) make them, and they have just 5 to 10 calories per packet. They come in a gazillion flavors from lemonade to fruit punch to strawberry banana. These sips will get you guzzling water and avoiding extra sweets.

Guilt-Free Sweet Treats
While protein-packed noshes and drink mixes are good, there are those urgent situations when every bakery, convenience store, and vending machine you pass is practically screaming your name. For these times, you need sweet swaps...lots! Toss a Hostess 100 Calorie Pack (Chocolate, Carrot, or Golden Cake!) into your purse, tote bag, or backpack for instant cake-y satisfaction that won't cost you hundreds of calories and dozens of fat grams. Quaker Mini Delights (90-calorie packs of yummy rice snacks -- some drizzled with icing!) are also an awesome on-the-go option -- the Cinnamon Streusel ones have saved us from stuffing our faces with actual gooey, fattening desserts more than once.

Splenda Flavors and Flavor Blends for Coffee
It can be tough to turn down a delicious coffee drink when everyone's guzzling cappuccinos and stuff. But keeping these tasty coffee-enhancers around means you can easily upgrade any cup o' joe to a sweet 'n' flavorful, nearly calorie-free hot beverage. Be your own barista! Check out Cinnamon Spice, Caramel, and French Vanilla. Order 'em here if your local store doesn't have them. Mmmm...

Small-Sized Snack Bars
HG Warning -- do not stock up on meal replacement bars unless you actually intend to replace a meal with them! Otherwise, they will likely add more calories and as much fat to your daily tally as a regular candy bar. Instead, carry a couple of easy-to-tote (small and not too squishable) snack bars for between-meal munchies. We love Curves Chewy Granola Bars (just a hundred calories and loaded with fiber) and Special K Cereal Bars (90 calories and they come in lots of flavors, including chocolatey ones, fruity ones, and the awesome Honey Nut!).

My favorite diet snack is Almonds! at 150-170 cals per serving, this will fill you up for hours, lots more than a 100 calorie pack will, or 170 cals of cookies. Just get a can, and take the lid and spread a single layer of almonds to fill the lid for a serving. It will fill you up. Try it, you'll be amazed!

i've just started reading 'hungry girl' and have noticed most, if not all, recommendations are pre-packaged. i can't really afford to be buying this kind of pre-packaged stuff...are there any quick low-cal snack recipes that i can make (other than the regular carrot and celery sticks with pb)? i'd like to see something like that featured.

Almonds come in a big multi serving can. One thing you can do from home is you can add them to yogurt or cereal for a breakfast with extra health benefits. Most of us dont' have time to come home from work and make our own snacks or have space at work to cook foods other than a microwave. Also the prepackaged portions help us control the amount we eat instead of eating directly out of a big box that will end up being more fattening and defeating the point. You can benefit from the big-box size of healthy foods if you're willing to weigh and measure your foods to control serving size. Invest in a kitchen scale and have those measuring cups handy to get the same portion control.

One of the best and most satisfying snacks is Buffalo Jerky. Less than a gram of fat per package (.8 ounces) and 8 gr of protein, 2.7 g of carbs. The best on the market is from Buffalo Gal.com because they raise their own animals and are sustainable ranchers. Split a caddy of 36 with some roomies and pay only about 1.25 each.

Almonds are about the best for nutrition and calorie impact. They are really great with your morning serving of oatmeal.

The BEST bar I have found recently is Fiber One Oats and Chocolate. It's 140 calories and 9 grams of fiber, and the chocolate is REAL.

I have lost over 35 pounds since Feb. of this year. My secret is simple, watch not just what you eat, but also how much you eat. I used to eat 2 sandwiches for lunch and an apple and a snack! Now I have one sandwich and half an apple. Was it difficult at first? Like anything else, it is only as difficult as you believe it will be. I actually enjoyed cutting back, because I knew there would be an end result. Begin with a goal in mind, for example, have a goal (realistic) that you want to lose 10 pounds your first month. Then weigh yourself once a week. Stay consistent with what you are eating and make sure you are eating enough, at the same time monitoring your intake of food. DO NOT LIVE TO EAT, INSTEAD EAT TO LIVE!!! Cheers, David

I have been eating these kinds of snacks for years already, and it seems to keep me at my normal weight. These snacks are great to snack on when you get the urge to eat something sweet..

Dried fruit can have sugar added, avoid bananas, but read the package. Or better yet, dry your own! super simple and not nearly as fussy as it seems. Then you avoid any additives that might be lurking.

Those 100 calories snack packs ARE affordable if you buy them at Big Lots or possibly another closeout store like Pic N Save or MacFrugals. You can also find sugar-free drink packets, nuts, tea, multi-grain crackers, Special K water....Basically everything mentioned in the article for half the price of a grocery store. It's a terrific guilt-free treasure hunt!

Actually don't avoid bananas. One a day is very good for you and very simple. As a diabetic, here are my choices for snacks. Bananas, apples, grapes, almonds for sure, try whole wheat pita bread cut in cubes with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Use natural peanut butter (in it's own oil). Also a boiled egg is a great snack. Also low fat string cheese is a great one. I agree these processed foods often have high frutose corn syrup. Stay away!

dried figs with string cheese - yummy. nuts are great - and very filling. The most filling small snack I can think of. All dried fruits have sugar (fruits have sugar) but eaten in moderation, no problem. You should be more worried about the additives and lack of nutrition in processed food.

A great homemade snack is putting 2 tablespoons of Cool Whip between 2 graham cracker squareds. Squish down until it looks like an ice cream sandwich. Put into an individual sandwich baggie and freeze. I do a bunch of these all at one time, putting them all on a cookie sheet and then sticking into the freezer and THEN putting them into individual baggies. THESE ARE REALLY GOOD.
