Hungry Girl's Halloween Survival Guide

If you're like us, it's not the haunted houses or scary flicks on TV that are extra frightening about Halloween -- it's the dread of taking in a gazillion calories' worth of candy! Luckily, HG has some amazing tips that may even have you dropping pounds this Halloween. Sweet!

Tips 'n' Tricks for Candy Day

Give Out Treats that Don't Tempt You - Halloween may seem like the perfect excuse to buy a jumbo-sized bag of your favorite candy or chocolate -- after all, it's for the kids, right?!? Make that mistake, and you'll only wind up dipping your hand into the candy jar again and again. Do the opposite instead. Detest licorice? Toss out Twizzlers to trick-or-treaters. Yucked out by a chocolate 'n' mint combo? Peppermint Patties it is!

Keep Guilt-Free Sweets on Hand - While the bulk of the candy you're surrounded by shouldn't be tempting, it's also important to prepare for the inevitable sweets craving. While Halloween may technically be a one-day holiday, all those goodies surface for days afterward at workplaces, friends' houses, schools, and more. By keeping low-calorie candies on hand, you can indulge a little. Click here for some of our favorite guilt-free sweets ever, including some Halloween staples you might not suspect!

Door-to-Door Workout - Take advantage of the celebration by squeezing in some exercise! Join your kids, siblings, nieces, nephews, or neighbors on a lengthy trick-or-treat walk around the neighborhood. Set up a friendly calorie-burning challenge by splitting up into groups (with at least 1 adult per group) and having a contest to see who can hit up the most houses in the shortest amount of time. That'll up the intensity of your trick-or-treat-athon. Then you can sneak a piece of your favorite candy without any guilt.

Wear a Disguise that Can't Lie - Dressing up this year? Forget about shapeless frocks like bedsheet ghost costumes and puffy pumpkin costumes. Wear something figure-flattering, and you'll be less likely to binge on seasonal goodies (who wants to be a bloated sexy witch?). And if you're really nervous you'll overeat, just wear a mask without a mouthhole (we're kidding!).

HG SHOCKERS!

Not-So-Fun-Size - Even those "Fun Size" snacks add up. A Fun Size Butterfinger bar has 100 calories and 4 fat grams, 1 Fun Size Baby Ruth has 85 calories and 4g fat, and every Fun Size pack of Peanut M&M's contains 110 calories and 5 fat grams (and not nearly enough M&M's)!

HG SAVIORS!

Candy Bag Best Bets - Not all those bite-sized bits are bad. Tootsie Roll Midgees have only 23 calories and a half-gram of fat each, a 3 Musketeers Mini has just 24 calories and less than 1 gram of fat, and an entire roll of Smarties has just 25 calories and is fat-free.

HG's Get-Fit Trick-or-Treat Game!

Oooh... this is a fun one. If you're planning to dispense treats this year, take advantage and get in a great workout. Play with friends, roommates, your significant other or even all by yourself. This may seem a bit silly, but trust us, it's a fantastic way to keep your metabolism up and burn calories on this candy-packed holiday!

The Rules: Each time you see a trick-or-treater dressed in a particular costume, do the corresponding exercise after you close the door. Remember, you have to finish before the doorbell rings again, so no dawdling. If a large group shows up, limit your exercises to just 2 to 3 at a time. We don't want you passing out!

HG Tip! As with any exercise, you may want to consult a doctor first. If it's a busy night, take a break when you need to. And feel free to swap the exercises listed here with ones you feel most comfortable with.

Ghost: 10 jumping jacks

Witch: Run in place for 30 seconds

Fairy/Butterfly/Anything with wings: Dance freeform for two minutes or till the doorbell rings again

Princess: Reach hands toward the ceiling, then toward toes (10 times)

Monster: "Invisible jump-rope" for 30 seconds (pretend you're jumping rope, just without the rope)

TV/Movie Character: 10 sit-ups or crunches

All good advice and I am planning to buy any candy we hate. My husband and I are in the process of getting thiner and healthier - there is no way I am letting Halloween wreck this plan. He will take what ever is left to work for his buddies. I no longer have 'Well, just one !" in my vocabulary! I'll get healthy if it kills me!

Great ideas. I do detest licorice so I will stock up on Twizzlers. Too bad for my husband, though, they are on of his favorites.

Why not forgo edibles entirely and give out stickers, temporary tattoos, pencils, mini-notepads, etc? Kids love them -- at least mine do. Party favors are easy to find around, especially at paper-warehouse type stores and catalogs such as Oriental Trading Company. Even packs of gum are kid favorites.

hehe.. the game sounds fun, but tiring if you run thru a whole bunch of kids each time the door bell rings

I do not give out candy for halloween. For the past 6 years or so I have been giveing out party favores such as things from Target that cost only a dollar, pincles, bubbles, tops, erasers, glow braclets. Kids do not need all that candy. It makes them hipper and hard to control inless there is a limit put on it. {Julie G} I agree with you.

Something tells me you might be doing a lot of crunches since TV/Movie characters are very common.

I buy (2 W.W.pts) popcorn balls that are individually wrapped at either Target, Wal-Mart or Super Wal-Mart. They also have little 1 pt bags of pretzels in the shapes of bats and pumpkins. The kids love them and they come back to my house every year.

I believe Halloween really is about kids. I've bought bubble gum and Smartees for years. I don't care for them but all the kids seem to love them and they're less expensive than the chocolate, fatty candy.

What a dope! I never thought of buying the candy I hate. This year, no chocolate, but bags of lollipops. No wonder I am in the process of trying to lose half my butt!

I am thinking about passing out mini bags of microwave popcorn and pretzels this year. No reason to get the kids all hyped up on sugar either :-). I love the ideas for getting in activity.

The best idea I've ever heard, and the best received, I started doing last year. I give out mini water bottles to all of the kids. They are very thirsty from all of their walking as well as from the candy they've been eating . I didn't have one complaint but had lots of thank yous!

Sondra, several years ago my husband and I decided to try that. It was such a HIT! The kids thought it was the coolest thing (even coming back to ask for another one) and the parents were grateful for a healthier treat. We bought our boxes of the mini Halloween microwave bags at Wal-Mart.

Oh good, when the next group of kids sees me doing jumping jacks behind the door they'll get scared and run away, and then I can eat the rest of the candy. :P

" Wear something figure-flattering, and you'll be less likely to binge on seasonal goodies (who wants to be a bloated sexy witch?)." God help the angst and neurosis that is implict in these articles. But thanks for finally revealing to me why people give out crud that everyone hates, like candy corn and licorice. For my part-- I think I'll choose the less self-centered path and give out something that I think the kids will like.
