Behind Bars -- Snack Bars Unwrapped

POST A COMMENT »

Back in the day, snack bars took up approximately ten inches of supermarket aisle space. And choosing one was easy, because you didn't have many choices. Nowadays, there are shelves and shelves stocked with every kind of snack bar imaginable. HG has chewed through gazillions of bars and is here with the scoop on some faves...

Low-Calorie Snack - Special K Cereal Bars

Stats: 1 bar, 23g = 90 calories, 1.5 - 2g fat, 85 - 110mg sodium, 16 - 18g carbs, <1g fiber, 7 - 9g sugars, 1 - 2g protein

Flavors: Honey Nut, Strawberry, Blueberry, Peaches & Berries, Vanilla Crisp, Chocolately Drizzle

Why They Rock: You really can't beat these 90-calorie, soft-yet-crunchy, sweet and flavorful cereal bars for a low-calorie bar treat. They come in oodles of flavors, from fruity ones to a decadent chocolate one and everything in between. HG's pick? The Honey Nut one -- it's like the love child of Honey Nut Cheerios and Rice Krispies Treats (yum!). Also, the Vanilla Crisp on is FANTASTIC!

Meal Replacement - South Beach Diet Meal Replacement Bars

Stats: 1 bar, 60g = 210 - 220 calories, 6 - 7g fat, 340 - 360mg sodium, 26g carbs, 5 - 6g fiber, 0 - 1g sugars, 19g protein

Flavors: Chocolate Crisp, Caramel Peanut Crisp, Vanilla Creme, Cinnamon Creme, Chocolate Peanut Butter

Why They Rock: Not only are these bars huge, they're also super-satisfying. They're PACKED with fiber and protein, yet have hardly any sugar (some have none at all). An added bonus? Each one contains 23 vitamins and minerals (not too shabby, South Beach!). Best of all, they're completely reasonable in the calorie and fat departments (unlike some excessively fatty bars we've seen), and they taste delicious!

Candy Bar Craving-Killer - Fiber One Chewy Bars

Stats: 1 bar, 40g = 140 - 150 calories, 4 - 4.5g fat, 90 - 105mg sodium, 28 - 29g carbs, 9g fiber, 9 - 10g sugars, 2 - 3g protein

Flavors: Oats & Chocolate, Oats & Peanut Butter

Why They Rock: These things may not come in a zillion flavors like some other snack bars, but they don't need to. The chocolate and the peanut butter ones are both so perfect, there's simply no need for any others. The things are ooey-gooey, super-sticky (in the best way possible) cereal bars that taste just like candy bars. The kicker? 9 grams of fiber! Yes!!!

All-Natural Option - Gnu Bars

Stats: 1 bar, 40g = 130 - 140 calories, 3g fat, 30 - 55mg sodium, 30 - 32g carbs, 12g fiber, 8 - 9g sugars, 3 - 4g protein

Flavors: Banana Walnut, Cinnamon Raisin, Orange Cranberry, Chocolate Brownie

Why They Rock: If you're under the impression that "all-natural" equals "earthy" and unappetizing, prepare to be wowed. These are actually the least bar-like bars on the list -- they're baked, super-soft and chewy... more like a rectangular soft cookie or a squished muffin, really! This is another fiber-slingin' bar brand, so you can count on getting 50% of your daily needs from one of these. BTW, if these haven't hit the shelves of your corner store yet, try Whole Foods or another health food store, or click here to order 'em online or track 'em down locally.

Energy Eats - Slim-Fast Protein Snack Bars

Stats: 1 bar, 28g = 110 calories, 3.5g fat, 100 - 120mg sodium, 16g carbs, 0g fiber, 7g sugars, 5g protein

Flavors: Whipped Chocolate Nougat, Whipped Peanut Nougat, Whipped Caramel Nougat

Why They Rock: These milky chocolate bars are perfect for when you need a zap of protein in a small, low-calorie package. When we first swallowed one of Slim-Fast's new protein snack bars, we had our doubts. But soon after we chomped one down, we noticed a sudden burst in our energy levels and we were sold. And their whipped texture reminds us of Milky Way's airy insides. Mmmmmmm!

I eat the South Beach protein bars and they are super good themselves. They have really great flavor! I'm usually very concerned about the sodium as well as sugars in bars so it's great to see these other choices.

I agree ... the FiberOne bars are the most delicious snack bars EVER! When I need something sweet, this is the best way to go (140 cal, lots of fiber, not loaded with sugar either)!

The Fiber One bars are the best bar on the market. Period. The Special K bars are terrible. I really have no idea how they made your list. Sure they only have 90 calories, but that's because they are about the size of my ring finger. THEY ARE SUPER TINY!! Don't waste your money, pick up the Fiber One bars instead.

Bars are great for when one is bike riding a long 60mi+ trip, camping, hunting in the wilderness, or away from civilization. I don't know about you folks (especially those who can't cook or assemble a sandwich or a buffet tray), but I like munching on food that is more like 'food.' 100 calorie granola or 100 calories of turkey with basil and tomato? or rye with provalone and ham? Honestly! What about an apple? or some nuts? sheesh . ..

The Special K bars are amazing! I have been eating them since college. I recently got my boyfriend to eat one while we were on a road trip. He loved them too, and he doesn't usually like snack bars. He told his mother about them, and now the whole family is eating them and congratulating me on such a great find.

I totally agree that the Fiber One bars ROCK!!! Only thing is, beware of the stomach cramping and possible diarrhea that ensues when consuming them regularly... it's not all the Fiber, it's the unnatural chemicals. There are so many preservatives in those things! And I know I'm not the only one who has had this problem. They are good... but watch out! :)

I love the fiber one, but they give me gas--BIG TIME. I cannot eat them if I will be in public the next 24 hours--really, that loud! Slim-Fast, and South Beach are good too. Never tried the others.

My husband is hypoglycemic and tends to run out of energy in the middle of the day. I bought the South Beach bars for him and he absolutely loves them--and he is very picky about food! The bars give him enough of a boost to get him through the day without the crash that comes from eating something that's pure sugar. Thank you for the great tips and recommendations!
