HG'S STARBUCKS SWAP-A-RAMA! - Shockers, Swaps & More!

POST A COMMENT »

We've got a love/hate relationship with Starbucks. While they do offer some great options for calorie counters, their menu is LOADED with fatty, high-calorie, TEMPTING beverages. Well, we've whipped up some guilt-free swaps for those blender offenders. And, since we here at HG know that sometimes you can't get to your own kitchen when the craving hits, we're also serving up some better choices at The 'Bucks...

SKIP IT! Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino Blended Creme
(12-ounce Tall w/ whipped cream: 380 calories, 14g fat, 240mg sodium, 59g carbs, 2g fiber, 45g sugars, 11g protein)

This crazy chocolate concoction has as many calories as a hamburger and as much fat as a donut. For some cocoa-flavored liquid?!? We created our own chocolicious version with a fraction of the calories & fat...

SIP IT! HG's Frozen Fudge Chip Freeze
(entire recipe, approx. 12 ounces w/ whipped topping: 140 calories, 4.5g fat, 194mg sodium, 22g carbs, 1.5g fiber, 13g sugars, 4g protein)

Ingredients:
1 packet diet hot cocoa mix; dissolved in 4 oz. warm water
2 oz. light vanilla soymilk
1 tbsp. sugar-free chocolate syrup
1 tbsp. semi-sweet mini chocolate chips
3 no-calorie sweetener packets
5-8 ice cubes OR 1 cup crushed ice
2 tbsp. Fat Free Reddi-wip

Directions:
Place all ingredients (except for the Reddi-wip) in a blender, and blend at high speed until well mixed. Pour into a tall glass, and top with Reddi-wip!

IN-STORE ALTERNATIVE! If you find yourself at The 'Bucks and simply must give in to a chocolate beverage craving, order a Tall Java Chip Frappuccino Light Blended Coffee. It's got plenty of creamy, chocolatey flavor, but only 160 calories.

SKIP IT! Starbucks Vanilla Bean Frappuccino Blended Creme
(12-ounce Tall w/ whipped cream: 340 calories, 10g fat, 240mg sodium, 55g carbs, 0g fiber, 45g sugars, 9g protein)

If vanilla-based beverages are your thing at coffee chains, do NOT fall victim to this frightening frap. With more than 300 calories and double-digit fat grams, it's a total diet-buster. Our decadent vanilla version has a mere 100 calories and just a single gram of fat.

SIP IT! HG's Vanillalicious Cafe Freeze
(entire recipe, approx. 12 ounces w/ whipped topping: 100 calories, 1g fat, 115mg sodium, 16g carbs, 0.5g fiber, 9g sugars, 4g protein)

Ingredients:
5 oz. light vanilla soymilk
1 oz. Torani Sugar Free Vanilla Syrup
1 tbsp. Fat Free French Vanilla Coffee-mate powder; dissolved in 1 oz. warm water
1 tsp. instant coffee
3 no-calorie sweetener packets
5-8 ice cubes OR 1 cup crushed ice
2 tbsp. Fat Free Reddi-wip

Directions:
Place all of the ingredients (except for the Reddi-wip) in a blender. Blend on high speed until thoroughly mixed. Pour into a tall glass, and finish off with whipped topping. A vanilla dream!

IN-STORE ALTERNATIVE!
Get your vanilla on with a Tall Caffe Vanilla Frappuccino Light Blended Coffee. 140 calories is a far more reasonable way to sip some blended vanilla goodness when you're out and about.

SKIP IT! Starbucks Strawberries & Creme Frappuccino Blended Creme
(12-ounce Tall w/ whipped cream: 410 calories, 11g fat, 250mg sodium, 68g carbs, 0g fiber, 59g sugars, 9g protein)

Who'da thought this fruit-infused sipper would be the worst (calorically speaking) on our list?!? Starbucks describes this as simply "strawberries and milk blended with ice, topped with whipped cream." We wanna know what kind of bizarre berries and moo juice they're using over there. Our strawberry swap has only 120 calories and 1 fat gram, and it's so insanely good that your head may actually spiral off your shoulders upon tasting it.

SIP IT! HG's Strawberry Cloud
(entire recipe, approx. 12 ounces w/ whipped topping: 120 calories, 1g fat, 100mg sodium, 21g carbs, 2g fiber, 14g sugars, 4g protein)

Ingredients:
2/3 cup frozen strawberries
5 oz. light vanilla soymilk
1 oz. Torani Sugar Free Strawberry Syrup
2 tsp. Fat Free French Vanilla Coffee-mate powder; dissolved in 1 oz. warm water
3 no-calorie sweetener packets
3-4 ice cubes OR 1/2 cup crushed ice
2 tbsp. Fat Free Reddi-wip

Directions:
Place all of the ingredients (other than the whipped topping) in a blender. Blend on high speed until completely mixed. Pour, then top with the Reddi-wip. Strawberrylicious!

IN-STORE ALTERNATIVE! Move over Strawberry Frap, there's a better berry in 'Bucks town! A Tall Raspberry Mocha Frappuccino Light Blended Coffee is fruity, chocolatey AND caffeinated, all for just 140 calories. Nice!

i like the recipes. My blender isnt as strong as the 'bucks blenders so I cant make exactly the same drink. I like sticking to sugar free italian sodas myself. But it's funny how all the alternatives are the 'Light' versions of the drinks... I kinda already knew all those. I was hoping for some special orders that might taste as good.

It's ludicrous that we all complain about the cost of gas, yet so many people flock to Starbucks and other places like that, where it's absolutely highway robbery to charge what they do for coffee. I still drink Starbucks, just buy the beans at Sam's and make "poor man's latte" by pouring scalding hot milk into a blender and pulsing it a bit until it's frothy, then pouring it over really strong coffee and flavor it with whatever I want.

I haven't had the chance to make any of the Starbuck-look-alikes yet; but I certainly plan to tomorrow. I appreciate HG's tips, some I will use, some not. iweigh128 needs to lighten up. I remember my mother saying 'if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all'.

HG seems to be very concerned with fat and calories, but not health. The stuff that is suggested is not good for you. Tons of hydrogenated oils and fake stuff that is literally a foreign substance in your body. May as well use the sugar!

who cares! STARBUCKS IS THE BEST! nobody cares at all. sorry but they just don't. these drinks that you can make yourself probably taste like cardboard and milk mixed together. starbucks is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 TIMES BETTER THAN THIS CRAP!

what happened to a good old cup of joe? plain, simple, delicious, gets you that caffine fix, and you can make it at home for way cheaper (and tastier) than the starbucks fare. Who need to turn a great thing like coffee into some elaborate shake? thats what smoothies are for.

Thanks HG. Seriously, if you aren't interested in her recipes, why waste time your time and ours with negative comments? Sure, we all know that fake stuff isn't the most wholesome, but not everyone feels like being so cautious about what kind of fake products go into our bodies. Personally, if it tastes good to me and it's a lower calorie alternative, I'm in. Every day we are one day closer to dying...why stress so much about fake this and fake that? Enjoy it people! It's all about balance and moderation!!!

Starbucks now has all of the creme based drinks such as the strawberries and creme in a light version with a third less fat and no whip cream so you are looking at less calories than most these drinks and the convience of not having to make it yourself!

I definitely agree with Jilly-o. Why sweat the small stuff. I look forward to making HG's coffee drinks. It is definitely a better alternative. For those of you who are making these silly negative comments, why are you on this site unless you were looking for a healthier alternative. Calm Down Please. It is not that serious.

Actually instead of buying high priced Starbucks and Jamba Juice you can make your own smoothies at home with frozen fruit, a packet of sugar, and a blender and you can make probably 3-4 dats worth of smpoothieds for less than Starbucks and Jamba. That's how my family lost weight. Oh yeah they are also very filliung as well and they taste a lot better than some of those drinks.

Well HG you have done it again.....blah, blah, blah about calories and fat,but nothing about excerising.... I can have Starbucks with whipped cream because at the end of the day, Im excersing on a daily basis so im not concerned about it... I told you once before and I'll say it again. You don't have to be a slave to Calories and Fat. Eat healthy, excerise and you don't have to be the Calorie & Fat police.. But hey I guess that's what happens when you refuse to get off your lazy butt and exercise you become a slave to Fake, Diet, and Processed things that are unhealthy... Talk to Joy she's a great person to talk to about food.

I use trade-free coffee from my local co-op. Make it double stong and place it in the fridge for the week. Then I take 1/2 of the coffee, 1/2 organic skim milk, 1 T of coffeemate, and 1-2 T sugar-free flavored syrup. They are easy to make and I get some good quality ingredients with some not so good...

It's funny, because you obviously did not do all your research. Stabucks has light version frappacinnos. Some of your drinks are still high in calories as well. Time to wake up, before you think you know whats what.

It'd be nice to get a tasty treat minus the calories but subbing the ingredients for "light" or "fat free" is just as bad...I rather go for the real stuff than go the "sugar free" toxic route

Another good alternative at Starbucks is an Iced Nonfat Latte. Add a little sugar or syrup or nothing and you have a tasty cool coffee drink straight from the 'Bucks!

Try this: In a coffee mug add a spoon of chocolate powder (not nestle quick but real cocoa powder), a dash of cinnamon and a packet of splenda. Pour brewed coffee, add skim milk, mix and enjoy. I do this at work ( I keep the cocoa and cinnamon in the pantry) and its pretty good.

I used to drink those Starbucks Drinks, but I soon discovered the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Chain has sugar free options that do not contain coffee. Most of HG's instore alternatives were coffee drinks. The Coffee Bean has lots of good, low calorie and low sugar options for kids as well.

I agree with iweigh128. HG's concoctions sounds equally unhealthy because they're poison. I would opt for a plain cup of black coffee with 100 calories worth of cream and sugar, or a cup of green tea with honey.
