I have been using wheelchairs for 57 years and I am proof positive
that you are in control of your own mind. No, you don't have to be seriously handicapped to to discover peace of mind, but you do have to realize sometime in your life that you are the boss of your own moods. Give yourself a pep talk every time you are down in the dumps and pull yourself out of it. Products off the shelf are kinda like crutches for your inability to talk to yourself about what you can do to make life more interesting. You are the boss of your mind!

Mood boosting foods are a good thing, but like with anything else, only in moderation. And product placement, advertising, and endorsement are just a part of the world we live in, no big deal. We all need to make good choices for our selves and stop blaming everyone else for unhealthy decisions.

The 11 year old should eat a balanced diet of whole grains, lean protein, fruits and veggies and limited dairy (1% milk products) to keep her energy up.
Around 3 years ago, I was trying to balance work, housework and taking care of a 2 year old and I was TIRED and DEPRESSED! I had the good fortune of meeting a woman who helped me lose 35 pounds by helping me give up processed foods including all forms of bread and pasta. I now eat lean protein (fish and chicken), veggies, fruit (dried or fresh), small portions of rice/coucous/barley, olive oil (no butter), and only small amounts of cheese and have incredible energy and sleep really well. Eat dark chocolate if I need a treat. Drinking water is important to stay hydrated and detoxify the body. Gave up caffeine except a small amount in hot green tea and do not drink soda or juices. Through trial and error, I found that processed carbs/foods (chemicals and gluten) and caffeine make me tense and anxious. I also noticed that I lost a ton of body fat, was lean in places I never had been (thighs and upper arms!). All this only through food and started exercising after most of the weight loss. Stay out of the middle of the store! Sure it takes some time to prepare fresh foods, but it's worth it. I eat canned or frozen veggies too if in a hurry. Good luck!

Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, made his first rule to his students -- "Let food be your medicine, and medicine be your food.." It is NOT a good idea to use food as comfort, or a crutch. But, whether you like it or not, food is what your body uses to build and repair itself. Therefore, you ARE what you eat.. Moderation is the key, and mindfulness. Be aware of what you are eating, and be aware THAT you are eating. THAT is what is called NOURISHMENT! I also agree with bauniculla - this is one person's opinion and ideas. You can agree or disagree, take it or leave it, but you don't have to bash it or riducule it...

Face it. We are all going to eat. It's nice to have someone try to help figure out what is the best foods to focus on. About the product placement...Seriously...have you watched tv lately?

As a first time reader I am amazed at the level of ignorance displayed in the comments. This is simply an article offering advice to take an alternative method to reducing depression instead of continuing to be brainwashed by the drug companies to consume their version of depression control. RELAX! Take it for what its worth and if you dont like it...dont read it!! Power to the products from mother nature!!! Thanks for endorsing her Hungry Girl!!!
