How the French Stay So Slim

The little village that is Girl Meets Grape is just back from a jaunt to France, where I learned a couple of things about our Continental friends. Someone sent me a book awhile back about why French women don't get fat; as I was pregnant at the time, I wasn't quite sure how to interpret this gift. Regardless, it is true that French women (and men!) don't tend to be as heavy.

How do these Frenchies do it? Here are a few tips:

1) Set the table, set the mood. The French don't typically do fast food (though even that is changing thanks to la vie McDonald's). They dine, and eating and dining are not the same thing. Taking the time to drink coffee from real cups, using cloth napkins and tablecloths no matter how humble the meal, is part of the charm.

2) Eat slowly. This is a tough one for me, especially as a new mom, as I find myself shoveling anything I can get down my throat. Not healthy. Portion your food and savor it in small bites. Better for your digestion and easier to control portions.

3) Sip, nibble, repeat. One of my best girlfriends in Los Angeles is an incredibly elegant woman from Burgundy who, despite twenty years in the States, has yet to develop our gulping patterns. Francoise dines. She sips, she nibbles, she repeats. And I love her enough to wait it out with her at times when I have long since polished off my own dinner. And yes, she is lovely and slim.

4)  Liquor is quicker, but wine is fine. A lot of the cocktails and aperitifs in France tend to be wine-based, like a kir or Lillet, rather than being made from the hard-stuff. They don't swill the Grey Goose and Red Bull as a way of "preparing their palates." A lovely glass of something bubbly wakes up your tastebuds, while a glass of red or white with food promotes better digestion. And the French drink in a very different way than most Americans. Wine is served at both lunch and dinner, every day, but the French take a long time over every meal, so that two-hour lunch makes a single glass stretch quite awhile. Much has been made recently of studies that show the health benefits of daily, very moderate wine consumption versus the weekend "binge" model of drinking that dominates our college campuses and Friday happy hours nationwide.

5)  Coffee is not dessert itself. I have a friend who works at Starbucks who once told me the zillions of calories to be found in one of those mocha-latte-caramel-whipped-cream-venti-crazyccino things. The French drink espresso or cafe au lait in small portions, that's it. (I adored the lovely little automated coffee machines and café tables at the rest stops along the A4 motorway from Burgundy to Paris.) Ditch the calorie-filled, whipped cream dessert coffees, but take the time to savor the smaller portion you do order. And drink it from a real cup.

I was just in Paris. The reason they stay slim is they walk everywhere. The Metro is alot of fun to use and gives you a good workout. We walked everywhere. We are trying to use more mass transit back home now and walk anywhere we don't need a car. Also, with food in Paris costing about twice what it costs here, who can afford to over-eat? I also noticed the portion size was less than the ridiculous amount of food we serve in restaurants. I love the energy of the people in Paris. I didn't see any over-weight Frenchmen; just fat American tourists. hahaha

The reason they are slim is because they smoke. Everyone is 20 pounds lighter is one smokes a pack a day, works a 35 hour work week and has few Euros to pay for food.

The French stay slim through a regular diet of theit three major food groups: cigarettes, black coffee (espresso) and red wine. Food is an afterthought to them.

They are slimmer than Americans because they consume fewer calories and expend more calories than Americans do.

The French eat a HIGH FAT diet, and still stay trim. It's CARBS that are the real culprit in terms of making people FAT. Also, this article is STUPID. The French aren't slim because the set a nice table. And who says the French eat slow and "nibble"??

I just read another article that says the french populations obesity level is growing at alarming rates. Whereas 50% of US and UK populations are overweight 40% of france's are. The article also says the rate is growing at about 5% per annum. Their meal time on average has dropped from 1hr 22 minutes to 38 minutes. Let's not glorify their habits quite yet.

I totally agree, I am from England and eat the way the French do, I hate those paper cups and always ask for a "real cup" in cafes. I have kept the same weight (105lbs) for years!

The French eat a HIGH FAT DIET, with lots of rich sauces and meat and cheese. They are still thin. WHY? Because they don't eat huge portions of crappy food like we do, and because we pig out WAY TOO MUCH on carbs.

They also stay slim because their food tastes awful! I couldn't find a good restaurant on my visit to Paris, although their bread, butter and wine were all delicious.

Elman - you have no understanding of history, and simply gobble up any nationalistic garbage thrown at you by, what, old Dukes of Hazard reruns? I know its not worth responding to you, but damn, could Americans crack a book every once in a while.

Elman - isn't the joke a bit too obvious? Yes, many french smoke, and they don't seem to have all of the processed foods we tend to eat here. The food has more taste, and is denser, so it tends to fill you up. They eat a lot of meat, which fills you up faster than a large amount of carbs. They love their breads, but I think there is a balance to their lives that we just don't have. Walking from place to place doesn't hurt. It's everything.

They walk everywhere! That is the key. If everyone walked minimum 5 miles a day, we would all be slim. Also, they are not as handicap friendly, hence no lifts (elevators) or escalators. A lot of them live in flats (apartments) and have to climb up and down their stairs all day with no elevator assistance and then walk to dinner or the grocery story. Even their Metro stops rarely had an elevator or escalator!

Yeah, but the truth is Obesity IS an issue in Western Europe and all other countries that have a relatively high per capita GDP. People in Paris might be slim because they walk everywhere. The same can be said about people in Washington, DC or New York. French food is legendary for being unhealthy. It's loaded with creams and saturated fat! I'm a fan of France, and even own a house in the South. But, not all of France lives a healthy lifestyle. Trust me, they don't.

Asian food is the healthiest and the decent Asian female don't smoke or drink. They have full time job, but they still take care of their husband, do all the housework, take care of the kids...If everyone can do that like them, you'll never worry about getting fat.
