Real Men Do Drink Wine

If you watch much TV, you'd think that the American male is still pretty much obligated to drink beer in order to prove his masculinity. Now don't get me wrong, beer is a noble drink that sometimes proves to be a better match than wine with certain foods. But unfortunately, wine was on the losing end of the beverage wars for far too long, and the assumption was that real men didn't like fermented grape juice anymore than they liked quiche. Wine was for wimps, according to Madison Avenue, or at least was nothing more than a silly pink beverage designed for women.

Happily for those in my line of work, the times they are a' changing! Recent statistics have proved that wine has finally outpaced beer in overall American consumption. This is historic. While women still make the majority of wine-buying decisions, the time for real men to buy wine is here. And I'm not just talking to the fussy, over-educated male wine snobs out there, but to the everyday guys looking to relax with a drink while watching the game or manning the grill. Another bonus is that wine isn't as fattening as beer and comes loaded with beneficial antioxidants and heart-friendly polyphenols

So drink some red wine with Dad this Father's Day -- choose some easy-drinking zinfandel for barbecued chicken off the grill or a chewy cabernet to pair with steaks. A glass or two of red wine consumed with food is a very healthy alternative to guzzling a six-pack of Bud for the average American male. And while you're at it, encourage Dad or your husband, boyfriend, or brother to go for a brisk walk after that barbecue bonanza -- wine can and should be a part of an overall commitment to a healthier American lifestyle for us all. Cheers!

That is exciting news! I have never been a beer fan, and now that Matt and I went wine tasting he is MUCH more excited to have a glass at the end of the day instead of reach for that bottle of Amstel Light. I prefer wine so basically it's a win win situation for me :) Love your articles Bonnie! Hope to see you guys again soon! -Karin :)

There are many factors why someone might choose beer over wine. Often times, especially during the Summer, I'm looking for something very frosty to drink and wine usually isn't something you serve really cold. Any suggestions of how to quench my thirst with wine when I'm looking to survive summer heat?

Like I've mentioned on prev bites, I've only been enjoying wine the past few years. I've always been a "beer" guy. I still drink beer, but on weekends we have friends over & we all enjoy good wine, & great food! Good article!

I would croak if my husband ever drank wine or any other alcohol. My mother alway told me, "Never marry a man who drinks!" and I listened to her. We have no desire to consume a mind-altering drug, legal or not.

s2_rob, Most white wines should be chilled before drinking. Try something in a zinfandel or rosato!
