The wine community in the US is still a surprisingly small one, in part due to the Internet and to the quick rise of wino bloggers like myself. We each have opinions; blogging gives us an all too convenient forum to air our grape-scented views and to vent, gripe, grouse, or praise as the case may be. There are wine blogs out there for the super-geeky who genuinely care about yeast strains and who can immediately locate Yecla on the world's wine map. (Confession: I am definitely one of these geeks, I just tend to hide it unless I am hanging out with the similarly obsessed.) There are blogs that are meant for winemakers to exchange ideas and techniques, just as there are blogs sponsored by major media outlets like the New York Times or Wine Spectator.
For the record, our goal at GMG is to keep the dialogue focused on YOU, the consumer, who usually just wants to know what wine tastes good with what food and who wants to learn a little something along the way, too. So please do feel free to let me know what topics most interest you as readers, and I will do my best to address these as 2007 progresses.
But in the meantime, I have a favor to ask: Help me win the Battle of the Wine Blogs! I have learned that my very good friend Gary Vaynerchuk, a wine retail titan based in New Jersey, is seriously whooping me in a new contest over at www.localwineevents.com. This site is a terrific resource to find wine action in your local area and I recommend it highly, especially for those of you who may not be in a major metropolitan area. However, though Gary is a good guy, he is a die-hard Jets fan and thus must be stopped dead in his blogging tracks.
Check out what's going on in the wine world in your zip code and vote for "Girl Meets Grape" while you're there, too.
