I have recommended quite a few Trader Joe's wines over the last few years, but never their infamous "Two-Buck Chuck" as this product is all about price and hype and, frankly, just isn't drinakable. I was troubled to learn more about the real cost of Two Buck Chuck, or Charles Shaw wines made by Bronco Winery's Fred Franzia, an exclusive at Trader Joe's. TJ's and Franzia have made a bundle selling these el cheapo wines, but that two-dollar-a-bottle price is actually much higher for people like 17-year old farm worker Maria Vasquez, who died of heat stroke while pruning vines in a Franzia-owned vineyard last month.
Maria was two-months pregnant and was working in a vineyard where the nearest water source was a ten minute walk away, despite the sweltering temperatures. The contract laborer for whom she worked had been repeatedly cited and fined for violating safety standards, and now faces criminal charges in Maria's death.
Whether it's pricey handwoven rugs made with illegal child labor or inexpensive clothing items made in sweatshops abroad, buy intelligently. Someone's fingers did that work. The same is true of wines: someone's fingers picked those grapes. So, don't support products with pricetags so low they come at the expense of human rights.
If you care about this issue, consider petitioning Trader Joe's to stop selling these wines. They have a great track record of actually listening to their consumers, and then enacting real change across their stores. Let them know you'd rather pay a little more for a bottle of wine that shows respect for the humanity of the person who helped make it.
I have always been very proud to support the wines of Talley Vineyards in California's Arroyo Grande appellation. Talley makes world-class wines AND leads the charge for healthcare coverage for their workers and others in San Luis Obispo via their special Mano Tinta bottling. Consider ordering some of these wines to support the Fund for Vineyard and Farm Workers or, for you lucky California residents, head out to their 2006 release party which will be a blast -- it's at one of the most scenic wineries on the Central Coast.
