Perhaps your New Year's resolution is to take better care of yourself -- eat better, exercise, finally get to the nail salon for a pedicure because your toes are looking really sad...or is that just me? Well, here's a tasty resolution to add to your list: Drink more red wine as part of your anti-aging strategy!
Most folks agree these days that alcoholic drinks (in moderation) offer a variety of health benefits, from improved cardiovascular function to cholesterol-lowering potential. Red wine adds to these benefits with a host of healthy polyphenols. And now new research seems to indicate that red wine might also prolong your lifespan. Harvard researcher David Sinclair, in partnership with Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, recently announced the results of his research into resveratol, a compound that occurs naturally in red wine. While resveratol has successfully prolonged the lifespan in rodents, this recent announcement at the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference marked the first time that this anti-aging effect has been replicated in humans. It's exciting research, with far-reaching implications for drug manufacturers who'll want to mimic red wine's anti-aging properties with a whole new generation of products.
For now, though, this evidence seems to explain why my French winemaking friends always seem so spry and energetic well into their later years. Take a page from their playbook, and resolve this year to add a glass of red wine to your beauty regimen. Help slow down your body's aging process the tasty way by drinking red wine in moderation.
