Fight Aging with Red Wine

Perhaps your New Year's resolution is to take better care of yourself -- eat better, exercise, finally get to the nail salon for a pedicure because your toes are looking really sad...or is that just me? Well, here's a tasty resolution to add to your list: Drink more red wine as part of your anti-aging strategy!

Most folks agree these days that alcoholic drinks (in moderation) offer a variety of health benefits, from improved cardiovascular function to cholesterol-lowering potential. Red wine adds to these benefits with a host of healthy polyphenols. And now new research seems to indicate that red wine might also prolong your lifespan. Harvard researcher David Sinclair, in partnership with Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, recently announced the results of his research into resveratol, a compound that occurs naturally in red wine. While resveratol has successfully prolonged the lifespan in rodents, this recent announcement at the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference marked the first time that this anti-aging effect has been replicated in humans. It's exciting research, with far-reaching implications for drug manufacturers who'll want to mimic red wine's anti-aging properties with a whole new generation of products.

For now, though, this evidence seems to explain why my French winemaking friends always seem so spry and energetic well into their later years. Take a page from their playbook, and resolve this year to add a glass of red wine to your beauty regimen. Help slow down your body's aging process the tasty way by drinking red wine in moderation.

Ah now I know why my grandfathers lived into their nineties despite smoking most of their lives. Yes the Red wine has been obvious for a while nice to see that we now have medical proof!

to Mark M.: well, I disagree about the smoking as I have too much cancer on my mind these days to endorse it...BUT, you're right on the red wine thing. Gotta love those Frenchies that are 90 and still guzzling the Cotes-du-Rhone. What do you think about the new French smoking ban?! BG

If this pans out, it won't be long before we see "with extra resveratol" on the labels of struggling wines...

to blairgolson: actually, big pharm is in a rush to isolate resveratol into pill form, much less fun that uncorking a nice bottle of red. --BG

Research by Roger Corder seems to indicate that resveratol is not the active ingredient in red wine's anti-aging. You neeed to drink wines high in oligomeric procyanidins to protect your arteries. Thus you need to drink wines made from Tannat or perhaps Malbec

to Darby H: You're right to clarify on this, as I have heard the same thing regarding the inkiest of wines, tannat. The research on red wine is still being codified, but the indications are always that red wine (the more extracted, i.e., skin contact, the better) is always a good bet in moderation. Fantastic note, thanks. --BG
