I work as a barista and have become spoiled about what I drink at home. I got an espresso machine last Christmas but the milk steamer didn't do well. So, this Christmas I got a Capresso FrothXpress. Fabulous! Just like from the store. Also, to save time, you can make cold brewed coffee ahead of time in a Toddy brewer and the "concentrate" lasts a week in your fridge. Then, you can either use it for cold drinks or warm it up for a hot drink. Very smooth coffee, about 65% less acidic than coffee made hot. Go Seattles Best!

Strong coffee + milk OR strong milk + coffee. Stuck at work or College (or a friends)? Bring Powdered Nonfat Milk. Add normal coffee from your cafeteria or lunchroom, stirring quickly to prevent lumps. Folgers tastes as good as "The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf" latte. It takes practice to prevent lumps and some brands of powdered milk always make lumps, so if you have problems, try a different brand. To make the latte = to 1 mug of milk start with 1/3 of a mug of powdered milk (a bit rich). If it has to be Starbucks, buy your own or make it at home. To save money, buy it at Costco. Starbucks roasts Costco's generic beans.

I admit to being addicted to coffee. My newest thing is iced coffees that I make at home, taste just like McDonalds and starbucks. I brew a full pot of very strong freshly ground coffee. I let it cool on the counter and then fill a big glass airtight container and refrigerate until cold. When I want a glass, it's probably a little bigger than a 12oz, put a shot of davinci sf white chocolate, a squirt of sf chocolate ice cream topping, fill 3/4 full with coffee, and pour in enough half and half til it appears milky brown and throw in an ice cube. stir well and enjoy! Saves a heck of a lot of money, and with sugar free additives, it has not much nutritional value.

I do have to say that I learned a few brew your own latte tricks at home from a friend of mine that owns a coffee shop. Order the Torani syrup from an online discounter and pick my favorite brand of coffee. I brew it in an espresso machine and add my syrups and a little redi whip and boy does it remind me of being home. The other fun thing is that you can make your own flavors noone sells :) Caramel & Banana syrup in an iced latte is so yummmy!!

Peets coffee is better quality than Starbucks. Or if you're in Colorado, try Das Bog! Intense, deep and rich!

You are comparing your at home coffee to a starbucks, they suck. How about the mom and pops out there that have talented baristas and not just button pushers (its not your fault Baristas that the company you work for does not care to teach you the right way of making a gourmet latte). How about the community aspect of a true coffeehouse that is a great place to meet friends, have free wifi, or take your kids on the weekend to read or play a board game that is provided? Coffeehouses have been around since at least the 16th centry because they are a place for the community to meet and be a community. Our local one has policitcal forums, book clubs, single mom groups, health seminars, supports local artist with art shows, and sponsors local schools and non-profit organizations. It isn't just a cup of coffee, it is a place to be part of the community. You call yourself divine?????? Why don't you do a little more research, Ms. Divine, espcially as you make your money sipping a gourmet latte while you tell others to deprive themselves of a little fun that they work so hard to have once in awhile.

Cash and Carry has the best prices on the syrups, about two or three dollars less per bottle. Plus they have specials on them, and the other coffee paraphanelia. Also, I purchased an aero-latte from Bed & Bath for $15, (and used their coupon) to make the froth. I heat it up for a second in the microwave first. Yeah, some of those drive through coffee huts are nasty! Tastes like powdered coffee with powdered coffee mate.

I forgot to mention, Costco has both starbucks coffee and beans made by starbucks for Costco. Way cheaper.

I use the Aero Press French Press and it is fantastic! With an espresso ground, it makes an espresso that is very good and strong. If acid reflux is an issue for you, try Hevla Coffee in the Aero Press. It tastes great and is very smooth. Great article BTW! My husband and I decided years ago that daily espresso from Starbucks and similiar shops was a waste of money so we started making our own...now we are millionaires! Well... maybe thousandaires..... : )

I have to say saving a buck is always nice but if we all get out and spend a couple bucks at our local coffee shops and other place we all like so much isn't that getting our economy in the right spot. Start small and it will have a huge impact. Plus your locally owned coffee spot might be a better deal after you start adding up the cost of all those ingredients you like in the do-it yourself drinks. Just think about it.

OK, brewing coffee at home is great, I do it every morning, but what do you do when you need one in the afternoon? Coffee starts to taste nasty after a while in the to go mugs, and even if I buy it black, it adds up if you buy it all the time.

Never really was a coffee drinker till I purchased a French press. Using the French press will take a few tries to find the the right mixture. My sis-n-law, who is a Starbuck's junkie, said that I made the best coffee she has ever had. I use filtered water from my frig and just bought a $20 Krupps coffee grinder to grind my own beans which made the coffee taste even better. So I guess I spend about $15 per month on buying coffee from the super market.
