Indulging in a lazy morning-into-afternoon buffet brunch is one of our favorite ways to spend a Sunday. What could be better than a cozy gathering with friends and family filled with tasty nibblies, a steamy cup of coffee, and perhaps a mimosa or two? And it's so easy to pull it all together. Here, our top picks for throwing an eye-opening breakfast bash.
- Cook up creative invitations by placing fragrant coffee beans in small glassine envelopes and attaching a card with all the details.
- Create an eye-opening buffet spread with a modern color scheme. Start by covering the table with a cloth in an appropriate color such as "java" (i.e., chocolate brown) or waffle" (i.e., natural linen). Top it with a fun centerpiece: Fill a glass vase with white sugar cubes and cheerful gerber daisies (we especially love the hot pink).
- Roll up paper napkins in an array of bright colors and use mini-bagels as napkin rings! Then stack them in a silver ice bucket or basket along with utensils for easy access.
- Make a simple and elegant fruit salad by combining green grapes, mangos, and strawberries and blueberries -- then spoon the mixture into martini glasses. Garnish with a spoonful of vanilla yogurt and a sprinkling of muesli or fresh raw walnuts.
- Slice up a variety of sweet breads such as blueberry, corn, banana, pumpkin, and zucchini and place on an oversized platter next to mini muffins, scones, and croissants.
- Lightly toast an assortment of bagels and serve them in oversized baskets (lined with napkins) along with a scrumptious display of spreads, including flavored cream cheese, jams, and butter.
- If you want to add something a bit more substantial to the menu, mini quiches (available frozen) and sliced ham are always a hit. Just keep it simple so you can enjoy the party along with your guests.
- Satisfy your guests' caffeine cravings with a gourmet coffee bar -- put out an assortment of mugs, bowls of whipped cream, shaved chocolate, vanilla beans, sugar, and cinnamon sticks right alongside a big batch of piping hot joe.
- For those tea drinkers, fill a glass bowl with a nice assortment of tea bags, including English breakfast, mint, chamomile, and Earl Grey. Offer sliced oranges and lemons, sliced fresh ginger, and honey on the side.
- Place pitchers of orange juice next to bottles of champagne and a bowl of fresh raspberries so guests can create mimosas to their desired tastes.
- Turn on some mellow morning tunes - Pete Yorn, Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams, Badly Drawn Boy, Belle & Sebastian and Al Green are some all-time faves.
