Throw Mom a Mother's Day Party!

Each day is a reason to celebrate Mommie Dearest, but every May the whole country does it en masse. This year, surprise your mother with a celebration that befits her status as The Greatest Ever. She lived through years of dirty diapers (and the dreaded teen years), so you owe her!

  • Gather a bunch of friends, siblings, and moms for a group brunch -- very festive and more personal than going to a restaurant with just the family. Make it potluck, but give guidelines on what to bring -- you may even want to assign specific dishes to avoid ending up with six bowls of fruit salad. Some favorite suggestions -- brioche and croissants with an assortment of hams, cheeses, and extras like arugula and sliced tomato . . . vegetable quiches . . . melon balls served in martini glasses . . . pasta salad . . . and bellinis to wash it all down.

  • Decorate with a sophisticated color palette such as cream and soft coral. If space and weather allows, set up a long banquet-style table in your backyard (they're easy to rent from your local party store). Cover with a creamy tablecloth and place a colorful runner down the middle. Line with individual flower buds in small glass vases. Once the feasting is done, invite moms and  kids to have their photos taken. Set up a rustic backdrop by hanging a large piece of solid fabric over a clothes line or bar. Then enlist someone to act as photographer and snap candids of guests against the backdrop. This works especially great with black-and-whites or sepia prints -- send out copies several weeks later as a wonderful memento.

  • There's nothing like a sleepover to bring back your childhood, so throw an old-fashioned slumber party! Tell everyone to bring their pajamas and slippers and get ready to snuggle up for an evening of music, chick flicks, gossip, giggling, and junk food. Serve up old favorites with modern twists for munchies -- white cheddar popcorn, blonde brownies, sorbet, and oodles of champagne! And don't forget to have breakfast ready when everyone wakes up the next morning -- coffee, OJ, bagels with cream cheese, scones with jam, grapes, and sliced pear. Send each mom home with a bag filled with beauty and spa goodies so she can treat herself any day of the year. Plum Party has an adorable assortment of flower-accented gift bags -- perfect for stuffing with facial masks, bath oil, and more.

Claudia - Don't choose to be alone. Choose to be with someone. Your choice.

I really like the slumber party idea! As a mom Im really liking the idea of getting together with my mom friends and having a good old fashoned sleep over and let the dads and husbands keep the kids! I think I just may start planning one real soon!! Thanks for the idea!!!

I think it's a great ideal. Although, I only have toddlers, it still would be great for my mom.

Awsome idea for those who can do it. Myself I would prefer my kids to take me shopping. Nothing fancy but at least I'd get what I need or want. A cookout that I dont have to slave for would be great to. Pampering with a nice foot massage or facial or manicure would be appreciated as well.
